Model driven software development (MDSD) has resulted in improved productivity, better quality and platform independence. However, MDSD has not been very successful in supporting reuse and system evolution due to inadequate modeling support for clear separation of concerns and their composition. Aspect oriented programming (AOP) addresses separation of concerns at the code level wherein both aspects and components are typically specified in object oriented paradigm. Aspects are woven into components using a set of pre-defined composition relationships at specified join points. The model driven architecture (MDA) initiative of OMG aims to shift the focus of software development further towards modeling. With model content in system specifications increasing more and more, it is critical to address the issue of separation of concerns at model level. To facilitate traceability, reuse and evolution, a system needs to be specified in terms of multiple viewpoints corresponding to multiple stakeholders and their concerns. In this paper, we present, an approach to specify aspects as models and an implementation architecture suitable for a model driven software development environment. We propose a meta modeling approach to elevate aspect specification to the modeling world. An aspect type is specified in terms of a meta model that defines the language for describing aspect instances. Aspect and component specific meta models can be seen as views over a unified meta model. We propose an abstraction called Composition template for specifying weaving and consistency constraints between aspects. We also propose an implementation architecture for a model driven software development environment that addresses separation of concerns in the development process to support independent development of concerns and their integration through a set of roles.

One of the means to enhance software reliability and quality is testing. The testing for object-oriented software is more complex and difficult than that for traditional programming. For object-oriented class-level and cluster-level testing, we proposed a significant methodology TACLLE which has been published in acm Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (vol.7., no.3, p.250-95, 1998; vol.10, no.1, p.56-109, 2001). This methodology includes an important algorithm named DOE to determine whether two objects are observational equivalent or not. This paper presents the design and implementation for a new prototype of DOE using object-oriented paradigm. The new prototype is based on UML model. It is improved on the technique, and optimized in the system interface.

This paper proposes a methodology for embedded systems co-design, based on statechart models. The process starts with grabbing the system functionalities through use cases. A set of procedures addressing the implementation of statechart models is presented. The main goal of this set of procedures is to lift the structuring mechanisms presented in statecharts to the top level. In this sense, the complexity of statechart implementation will be similar to the complexity of communicating concurrent state machines and the platforms selected to support implementation will not need to have specific capabilities to directly support the structuring mechanisms of Harel's statecharts. As a consequence, full direct implementation of statecharts is possible considering different types of implementation platforms, ranging from hardware-centric or software-centric to hardware-software partitioning through codesign techniques.

System-level design methodologies for embedded HW/SW systems face several challenges: In order to be susceptible to systematic formal analysis based on state-space exploration, a modeling notation with a simple formal semantics is desired. Architecture-level engineering practice demands notations, which concentrate on certain aspects of system functionality, while other aspects (such as communication and scheduling) are implicitly encoded in the language semantics, and realized using HW/SW components such as operating systems and protocol stacks. We describe a system-level design methodology targeted for automotive control applications. Models in a simple graphical component-based input language are compiled into complex system models incorporating abstractions for hardware, operating systems, and inter-processor communication. System models are based on the synchronous AutoFocus notation and are used as a basis for formal analysis such as systematic worst-case response time analysis. The paper describes a reference architecture for implementation, the MoDe design notation, and the translation to system models along with an outlook giving a perspective for analysis.

System architects working on SoC design have traditionally been hampered by the lack of a coherent methodology for architecture evaluation and co-verification of hardware and software. SystemC 2.0 facilitates the development of transaction-level models (TLMs), which are models of the hardware system components at higher level of abstraction than RTL. Due to lower modeling effort yet higher simulation speed, TLMs are useful for architectural exploration, algorithmic evaluation, hardware-software partitioning and software development. The problems posed by SOC design methodologies require development of models at higher abstraction also for the earlier developed IP's. The development time of a TLM IP is already low, so if we can reduce the verification time by re-use of the earlier RTL test benches we can reduce the overall cost of such an IP TLM. This paper focuses on the methodology to use the RTL testbenches for verification of a SystemC model of the same IP at a higher abstraction level (transaction level), some tools available in the market to support this testbench reuse and the implementation challenges posed by the mentioned verification technique.

This paper presents techniques for the design and implementation of domain specific languages. Our techniques are based on higher-order attribute grammars. Formal languages are specified in the classical attribute formalism and domain specific languages are embedded in the specification via higher-order attributes. We present a domain specific language for pretty-printing and we show how such language can be easily embedded in the specification of a powerful spreadsheet-like tool. From such specification an incremental implementation is automatically derived and the first results are presented.

In an evolving software system, components must be able to change independently while remaining compatible with their peers. One obstacle to independent evolution is the brittle parameter problem: the ability of two components to communicate can depend on a number of inessential details of the types, structure, and/or contents of the values communicated. If these details change, then the components can no longer communicate, even if the essential parts of the message remain *** present HydroJ, an extension of Java that addresses this problem. In HydroJ, components communicate using self-describing, semi-structured messages, and programmers use pattern matching to define the handling of messages. This design stems from two central ideas: first, that self-describing messages reduce dependence on inessential message format details; and second, that object-oriented pattern matching naturally focuses on the essential information in a message and is insensitive to inessential *** have developed these ideas in the context of Rain, a distributed, heterogeneous messaging system for ubiquitous computing. To evaluate the design, we have constructed a prototype HydroJ compiler, implemented some Rain services in HydroJ, studied the evolution of an existing Rain service over time, and formalized HydroJ's key features in a core language.
