An important challenge in edge computing service management is maintaining good quality of service and low latency for end-users. Edge services must be hosted near the end user, necessitating sophisticated management of virtualized resources in the edge infrastructure. In the context of edge computing, users' location and mobility patterns are essential components of resource allocation and service transfer. As a result, it is of the utmost importance to assess the effectiveness of the proposed management solutions in a city environment with realistic mobility. The purpose of this study is to investigate the simulation of edge computing and to present an integrated solution environment that makes use of two validated simulators for the modeling of urban mobility and edge computing services. © 2024 IEEE.

With the emergence of the serverless computing paradigm in the cloud, researchers have explored many challenges of serverless systems and proposed solutions such as snapshot-based booting. However, we have noticed that some of these optimizations are based on oversimplified assumptions that lead to infeasibility and hide real-world issues. This paper aims to analyze the gap between current serverless research and real-world systems from a perspective of industry, and present new observations, challenges, opportunities, and insights that may address the discrepancies.

The serverless computing model has been on the rise in recent years due to a lower barrier to entry and elastic scalability. However, our experimental evidence suggests that multiple serverless computing platforms suffer from serious performance inefficiencies when a high number of concurrent function instances are invoked, which is a desirable capability for parallel applications. To mitigate this challenge, this paper introduces ProPack, a novel solution that provides higher performance and yields cost savings for end users running applications with high concurrency. ProPack leverages insights obtained from experimental study to build a simple and effective analytical model that mitigates the scalability bottleneck. Our evaluation on multiple serverless platforms including AWS Lambda and Google confirms that ProPack can improve average performance by 85% and save cost by 66%. ProPack provides significant improvement (over 50%) over the state-of-the-art serverless workload manager such as Pywren, and is also, effective at mitigating the concurrency bottleneck for FuncX, a recent on-premise serverless execution platform for parallel applications.

Large language models (LLMs) are ubiquitously powerful but prohibitively expensive to train, often requiring thousands of compute devices, typically GPUs. To reduce the cost of training LLMs for customers, Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched the Amazon EC2 trn1 instances, powered by AWS Trainium, an Amazon's homegrown deep learning accelerator, as an alternative to distributed LLM training. The trn1 instances provide a high-performance LLM training solution at a lower cost compared to their GPU-based counterpart, the p4d instances, which are powered by Nvidia A100 GPUs. This paper describes the design and development of the Neuron distributed Training Library, a component of the AWS Neuron SDK, which enables distributed training of large language models on AWS Trainium. Neuron distributed Training Library supports a variety of existing distributed training techniques with unified interfaces, and provides features to address trn1-specific challenges as well. Our evaluation shows that trn1 instances, specifically the trn1.32xlarge, achieve better or comparable performance (up to 24.6% improvement) while offering significant lower costs (up to 46.3% cost saving) in selected workloads when compared to p4d.24xlarge instances. As a result, AWS Trainium has been adopted for training numerous external and internal models, showcasing its high-performance and cost-effectiveness. Recent advances in Generative Artificial Intelligence have fueled numerous applications, particularly those involving Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), which are essential for synthesizing realistic photos and videos. However, efficiently training GANs remains a critical challenge due to their computationally intensive and numerically unstable nature. Existing methods often require days or even weeks for training, posing significant resource and time constraints. In this work, we introduce ParaGAN, a scalable distributed GAN training framework that leverages asynchronous training and an asymmetric optimization policy to accelerate GAN training. ParaGAN employs a congestion-aware data pipeline and hardware-aware layout transformation to enhance accelerator utilization, resulting in over 30% improvements in throughput. With ParaGAN, we reduce the training time of BigGAN from 15 days to 14 hours while achieving 91% scaling efficiency. Additionally, ParaGAN enables unprecedented high-resolution image generation using BigGAN. © 2024 Owner/Author.

End-to-end latency estimation in web applications is crucial for system operators to foresee the effects of potential changes, helping ensure system stability, optimize cost, and improve user experience. However, estimating latency in microservices-based architectures is challenging due to the complex interactions between hundreds or thousands of loosely coupled microservices. Current approaches either track only latency-critical paths or require laborious bespoke instrumentation, which is unrealistic for end-to-end latency estimation in complex systems. This paper presents LatenSeer, a modeling framework for estimating end-to-end latency distributions in microservicebased web applications. LatenSeer proposes novel data structures to accurately represent causal relationships between services, overcoming the drawbacks of simple dependency representations that fail to capture the complexity of microservices. LatenSeer leverages distributed tracing data to practically and accurately model end-to-end latency at scale. Our evaluation shows that LatenSeer predicts latency within a 5.35% error, outperforming the state-of-the-art that has an error rate of more than 9.5%.

We study the local complexity landscape of locally checkable labeling (LCL) problems on constant-degree graphs with a focus on complexities below log* n. Our contribution is threefold: (1) Our main contribution is that we complete the classification of the complexity landscape of LCL problems on trees in the LOCAL model, by proving that every LCL problem with local complexity o (log* n) has actually complexityO(1). This result improves upon the previous speedup result from o (log log* n) to O(1) by [Chang, Pettie, FOCS 2017]. (2) In the related LCA and VOLUME models [Alon, Rubinfeld, Vardi, Xie, SODA 2012, Rubinfeld, Tamir, Vardi, Xie, 2011, Rosenbaum, Suomela, PODC 2020],we prove the same speedup from o (log* n) to O(1) for all constant-degree graphs. (3) Similarly, we complete the classification of the LOCAL complexity landscape of oriented d-dimensional grids by proving that any LCL problem with local complexity o (log* n) has actually complexity O(1). This improves upon the previous speed-up from o ((d)root log* n) by Suomela, explained in [Chang, Pettie, FOCS 2017].

ABET criteria for accreditation of undergraduate computer science (CS) degrees require universities to cover within their curricula topics including "local and global impacts of computing solutions on individuals, organizations, and society," and to prepare their students to "make informed judgments in computing practice, taking into account legal, ethical, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles" [1]. A growing body of research similarly identifies the need for CS programs to integrate ethics into their degree requirements, both through standalone ethics-related courses and embedded modules or case studies on the ethical impacts in 'technical' courses. The calls for increased attention to CS ethics education have become more pressing with the emergence of sophisticated consumer-ready AI technologies, which pose new ethical challenges in the forms of bias, hallucination, and autonomous decision-making. Yet it remains unclear whether current university curricula are adequately preparing future graduates to confront these challenges. This paper presents a systematic review of the degree requirements of 250 computer science bachelor's degree programs worldwide. We categorize each program according to whether a CS-related ethics course is offered and/or required by the department, finding that almost half of all universities we review do not offer any computing ethics courses, and only 33% of universities require students to take an ethics course to obtain their degree. We analyze differences among public US, private US, and non-US universities and discuss implications for curricular changes and the state of undergraduate computing ethics education.

All-reduce is the crucial communication primitive to reduce model parameters in distributed Deep Neural Networks (DNN) training. Most existing all-reduce algorithms are designed for traditional electrical interconnect systems, which cannot meet the communication requirements for distributed training of large DNNs due to the low data bandwidth of the electrical interconnect systems. One of the promising alternatives for electrical interconnect is optical interconnect, which can provide high bandwidth, low transmission delay, and low power cost. We propose an efficient scheme called WRHT (Wavelength Reused Hierarchical Tree) for implementing all-reduce operation in optical interconnect systems. WRHT can take advantage of WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) to reduce the communication time of distributed data-parallel DNN training. Simulations using real DNN models show that, compared to all-reduce algorithms in the electrical and optical network systems, our approach reduces communication time by 75.76% and 91.86%, respectively. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Data parallelism has become a cornerstone in scaling up the training of deep neural networks (DNNs). However, the communication overhead associated with synchronizing gradients across multiple nodes has emerged as a significant bottleneck, adversely affecting training efficiency and leading to a surge in large-scale distributed model training costs. By leveraging insights into the statistical characteristics of gradients, we present GComp, a near-lossless gradient compression scheme designed to reduce the communication burden during data-parallel training significantly. GComp develops an optimized Huffman encoding/decoding strategy to compress gradient exponents effectively. Additionally, it introduces an innovative multi-level quantization method for mantissa, complemented by a pruning strategy that eliminates zero-valued gradients. These integrated approaches significantly reduce the volume of data for synchronization, while virtually not affecting the DNN model's training accuracy. We conduct comprehensive evaluations of GComp, demonstrating that our method can decrease the communication volume by as much as 67.1%, and enhance training speed by up to 1.9×. © 2024 acm.
