This paper presents an algorithm to process a multi-way join with load O(n/p(2/(alpha phi))) under the MPC model, where n is the number of tuples in the input relations, alpha the maximum arity of those relations, p the number of machines, and phi a newly introduced parameter called the generalized vertex packing number. The algorithm owes to two new findings. The first is a two-attribute skew free technique to partition the join result for parallel computation. The second is an isolated cartesian product theorem, which provides fresh graph-theoretic insights on joins with alpha >= 3 and generalizes an existing theorem on alpha = 2.

Existing Internet of Things (IoT) platforms introduce various framework-specific APIs for building user applications, which causes technology fragmentation within the IoT ecosystem and incur engineering costs. I seek to adopt standard POSIX APIs in an IoT platform, to provide an environment much like a distributed operating system (OS). Building a distributed OS for IoT systems poses several challenges due to the high degree of heterogeneity and dynamism, lack of application semantics, and novel security requirements. I propose a system called OneOS, which addresses the challenges of building a distributed OS for the Internet of Things. © 2021 acm.

This work examines privacy laws and regulations that limit disclosure of personal data, and explores whether and how these restrictions apply when participants use cryptographically secure multiparty computation (MPC). By protecting data during use, MPC offers the promise of conducting data science in a way that (in some use cases) meets or even exceeds most people's conceptions of data privacy. With MPC, it is possible to correlate individual records across multiple datasets without revealing the underlying records, to conduct aggregate analysis across datasets which parties are otherwise unwilling to share for competitive reasons, and to analyze aggregate statistics across datasets which no individual party may lawfully hold. However, most adoptions of MPC to date involve data that is not subject to privacy protection under the law. We posit that a major impediment to the adoption of MPC-on the data that society has deemed most worthy of protection-is the difficulty of mapping this new technology onto the design principles of data privacy laws. While a computer scientist might reasonably believe that transforming any data analysis into its privacy-protective variant using MPC is a clear win, we show in this work that the technological guarantees of MPC do not directly imply compliance with privacy laws. Specifically, a lawyer will likely want to ask several important questions about the pre-conditions that are necessary for MPC to succeed, the risk that data might inadvertently or maliciously be disclosed to someone other than the output party, and what recourse to take if this bad event occurs. We have two goals for this work: explaining why the privacy law questions are nuanced and that the lawyer is correct to proceed cautiously, and providing a framework that lawyers can use to reason systematically about whether and how MPC implicates data privacy laws in the context of a specific use case. This paper introduces Mycelium, the first system to process differentially private queries over large graphs that are distributed across millions of user devices. Such graphs occur, for instance, when tracking the spread of diseases or malware. Today, the only practical way to query such graphs is to upload them to a central aggregator, which requires a great deal of trust from users and rules out certain types of studies entirely. With Mycelium, users' private data never leaves their personal devices unencrypted, and each user receives strong privacy guarantees. Mycelium does require the help of a central aggregator with access to a data center, but the aggregator merely facilitates the computation by providing bandwidth and computation power;it never learns the topology of the graph or the underlying data. Mycelium accomplishes this with a combination of homomorphic encryption, a verifiable secret redistribution scheme, and a mix network based on telescoping circuits. Our evaluation shows that Mycelium can answer a range of different questions from the medical literature with millions of devices.

We observe that accurate and fast tracking in Internet of Things (IoT) devices is still a challenging problem. Several deep learning models have emerged which provide higher accuracy scores in object detection and tracking, however, due to their computationally expensive nature they are not useful in enabling real-time tracking at IoT devices. Correlation filters have emerged to show better speed in real-time tracking and provide good tracking results in cases of occlusion, rotation, illumination and other distractions. To get better speed as well as accuracy we use combination of correlation filter and deep learning methods. We propose a distributed tracking and verifying (DTAV) framework. Specifically, we run two object tracking algorithms, one on the client and another on the server. The algorithm run on the client is referred to as the Tracker, which is based on correlation filter and runs easily in real-time. The server hosts the verifier algorithm which performs high accuracy verification. Thus, while the client performs fast object tracking, the server's tracking algorithm verifies the output and corrects the server whenever required to maintain the accuracy of the model. We present our edge computing-based framework and discuss the motivation, system setup and series of experiments performed for the framework and present our experimental results. DTAV achieved 7.78% improvement on accuracy and 15% improvement in FPS.

Parallel and distributed computing (PDC) has become pervasive in all aspects of computing, and thus it is essential that students include parallelism and distribution in the computational thinking that they apply to problem solving, from the very beginning. Computer science education is still teaching to a 20th century model of algorithmic problem solving. Sequence, branch, and loop are taught in our early courses as the only organizing principles needed for algorithms, and we invest considerable time in showing how best to sequentially process large volumes of data. All computing devices that students use currently have multiple cores as well as a GPU in many cases. Most of their favorite applications use multiple cores and numbers of distributed processors. Often concurrency offers simpler solutions than sequential approaches. Industry is desperate for software engineers who think naturally in terms of exploiting these capabilities, rather than seeing them as an exotic upper-level topic that gets layered over a sequential solution. However, we are still teaching students to solve problems using sequential thinking. In this workshop we overview key PDC concepts and provide examples of how they may naturally be incorporated in early computing classes. We will introduce plugged and unplugged curriculum modules that have been successfully integrated in existing computing classes at multiple institutions. We will highlight the upcoming summer training workshop, for which we have funding to support attendance, as well as other CDER (Center for Parallel and distributed computing Curriculum Development and Educational Resources) activities.

Variational quantum algorithm (VQA), which is comprised of a classical optimizer and a parameterized quantum circuit, emerges as one of the most promising approaches for harvesting the power of quantum computers in the noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) era. However, the deployment of VQAs on contemporary NISQ devices often faces considerable system and time-dependant noise and prohibitively slow training speeds. On the other hand, the expensive supporting resources and infrastructure make quantum computers extremely keen on high utilization. In this paper, we propose a virtualized way of building up a quantum backend for variational quantum algorithms: rather than relying on a single physical device which tends to introduce ever-changing device-specific noise with less reliable performance as time-since-calibration grows, we propose to constitute a quantum ensemble, which dynamically distributes quantum tasks asynchronously across a set of physical devices, and adjusts the ensemble configuration with respect to machine status. In addition to reduced machine-dependant noise, the ensemble can provide significant speedups for VQA training. With this idea, we build a novel VQA training framework called EQC - a distributed gradient-based processor-performance-aware optimization system - that comprises: (i) a system architecture for asynchronous parallel VQA cooperative training;(ii) an analytical model for assessing the quality of a circuit output concerning its architecture, transpilation, and runtime conditions;(iii) a weighting mechanism to adjust the quantum ensemble's computational contribution according to the systems' current performance. Evaluations comprising 500K times' circuit evaluations across 10 IBMQ NISQ devices using a VQE and a QAOA applications demonstrate that EQC can attain error rates very close to the most performant device of the ensemble, while boosting the training speed by 10.5x on average (up to 86x and at least 5.2x). Confidential VM, which offers an isolated execution environment for cloud tenants with limited trust in the cloud provider, has recently been deployed in major clouds such as AWS and Azure. However, while ARM has become increasingly popular in cloud data centers, existing confidential VM designs mainly leverage specialized x86 hardware extensions (e.g., AMD SEV and Intel TDX) to isolate VMs upon a shared hypervisor. This paper proposes TwinVisor, the first system that enables the hardware-enforced isolation of confidential VMs on ARM platforms. TwinVisor takes advantage of the mature ARMTrustZone to run two isolated hypervisors, one in the secure world (called S-visor in this paper) and the other in the normal world (called N-visor), to support normal VMs and confidential VMs respectively. Instead of building a new S-visor from scratch, our design decouples protection from resource management, and reuses most functionalities of a full-fledged N-visor to minimize the size of S-visor. We have built two prototypes of TwinVisor: one on an official ARM simulator with S-EL2 enabled to validate functional correctness and the other on an ARM development board to evaluate performance. The S-visor comprises 5.8K LoCs while the N-visor introduces 906 LoC changes to KVM. According to our evaluation, TwinVisor can run unmodified VM images as confidential VMs while incurring less than 5% performance overhead for various real-world workloads on SMP VMs.

Strictly serializable (linearizable) services appear to execute transactions (operations) sequentially, in an order consistent with real time. This restricts a transaction's (operation's) possible return values and in turn, simplifies application programming. In exchange, strictly serializable (linearizable) services perform worse than those with weaker consistency. But switching to such services can break applications. This work introduces two new consistency models to ease this trade-off: regular sequential serializability (RSS) and regular sequential consistency (RSC). They are just as strong for applications: we prove any application invariant that holds when using a strictly serializable ( linearizable) service also holds when using an RSS (RSC) service. Yet they relax the constraints on servicesDthey allow new, better-performing designs. To demonstrate this, we design, implement, and evaluate variants of two systems, Spanner and Gryff, relaxing their consistency to RSS and RSC, respectively. The new variants achieve better read-only transaction and read tail latency than their counterparts.
