Remote monitoring allows us to understand the regular living behaviors of the elderly and alert their loved ones in emergency situations. In this paper, we describe WatchMe, a software and hardware platform that focuses on making ambient monitoring intuitive and seamless. WatchMe system consists of the WatchMe server application and a WatchMe client application implemented on a regular wristwatch. Thus, it requires minimal effort to monitor and is less disruptive to the user. We hope that the WatchMe system will contribute to improving the lives of the elderly by creating a healthy link between them and their loved ones.

Processing, Arduino and the growth of the associated communities of practice, also called Maker communities, has motivated a broader participation of non-technical users in the engineering of interactive systems. Besides online sharing, Maker communities meet regularly and share knowledge for various purposes (e.g., creative hacking, social networking, lifelong learning). In the context of Maker communities, the understanding of engineering interactive systems (e.g., motivations, objectives, collaboration, process, reports) and the design of the respective tools (e.g., end-user programming for artists, or children) are not well documented. As a remedy, we present a coherent overview of related work, as well as our own experiences in the organization and running of Maker workshops. The tutorial format (lecture and hands-on workshop) benefits both practitioners and researchers with an understanding of creative software tools and practices. Moreover, participants become familiar with the organization of Maker workshops as 1) a research method for understanding users, 2) an engineering process for interactive computer systems, and 3) a practice for teaching and learning.

Domain-specific languages (DSLs) promise many advantages over general purpose languages (GPLs) and their usage is on the rise. That is one of the reasons for us at our university to teach the subject called Modelling and Generating of software Architectures (MaGSA), where the students learn how to work with DSLs and their parsers. Our students often have problems understanding a new DSL, even if it is very simple, because they never have worked with a DSL before. Therefore we decided to find a way to help them with the learning process by providing a DSL-specific editor. This editor will be automatically generated based on a language specification and the generator will be integrated into the existing infrastructure of the MaGSA project, which the students use on the subject. In this paper we present various techniques to reach the goal of generating graphical editors for DSLs and we introduce a prototype which is able to automatically generate a userinterface for an external DSL.

As a user of products and technology, one often experiences a wide range of emotions: happiness, frustration, gratitude, irritation, excitement, and apathy amongst others. Yet, as designers and deliverers of these tools and services, the human factor is often neglected with dire consequences. Deadlines and budgets become more important than analyzing the needs and behaviors of the user, unlinking the resource from its consumer. This degrades the perception of the offering and can be irreversible (and potentially fatal) to the reputation of software companies, IT departments, and hardware manufacturers. Despite the failings of many companies that have neglected the human element - companies that lacked empathy for their users - products continue to be delivered that are unintuitive, over designed, or inefficient. A great product or offering considers the user's experience (UX) when interacting with the service. The product is efficient and intuitive, while being transparent in presentation. UX is generally associated with software, but experiences are designed outside of computing as well. An often-polarizing example is customer service;customers remember great customer service experiences as much as they remember poor experiences. technology often enhances the user experience, but the experience itself is not confined to interactions with specific tools. Training IT help desk staff on how to interact with customers may not be something traditionally thought of as a UX initiative, but this is one small part of the experience that is designed for individuals having issues with their devices. At Santa Clara Law, the Law technology and Academic Computing (LTAC) group has improved efficiency, customer satisfaction, and saved time by considering UX principles early and often. Decisions once made with dangerous assumptions on the user's behalf are now considered with comprehensive data collected from a variety of different sources. Listening to what users are saying also h
