Since web applications are easily accessible, and often store a large amount of sensitive user information, they are a common target for attackers. In particular, attacks that focus on input validation vulnerabilities are extremely effective and dangerous. To address this problem, we developed ViewPoints - a technique that can identify erroneous or insufficient validation and sanitization of the user inputs by automatically discovering inconsistencies between client- and server-side input validation functions. Developers typically perform redundant input validation in both the front-end (client) and the back-end (server) components of a web application. Client- side validation is used to improve the responsiveness of the application, as it allows for responding without communicating with the server, whereas server-side validation is necessary for security reasons, as malicious users can easily circumvent client-side checks. ViewPoints (1) automatically extracts client- and server-side input validation functions, (2) models them as deterministic finite automata (DFAs), and (3) compares client- and server-side DFAs to identify and report the inconsistencies between the two sets of checks. Our initial evaluation of the technique is promising: when applied to a set of real-world web applications, ViewPoints was able to automatically identify a large number of inconsistencies in their input validation functions. © 2012 acm.

To access a set-associative L1 cache in a high-performance processor, all ways of the selected set are searched and fetched in parallel using physical address bits. Such a cache is oblivious of memory references' software semantics such as stack-heap bifurcation of the memory space, and user-kernel ring levels. This constitutes a waste of energy since e.g., a user-mode instruction fetch will never hit a cache block that contains kernel code. Similarly, a stack access will not hit a cacheline that contains heap data. We propose to exploit software semantics in cache design to avoid unnecessary associative searches, thus reducing dynamic power consumption. Specifically, we utilize virtual memory region properties to optimize the data cache and ring level information to optimize the instruction cache. Our design does not impact performance, and incurs very small hardware cost. Simulations results using SPEC CPU and SPECjapps indicate that the proposed designs help to reduce cache block fetches from DL1 and IL1 by 27% and 57% respectively, resulting in average savings of 15% of DL1 power and more than 30% of IL1 power compared to an aggressively clock-gated baseline. © 2012 acm.

Web applications are becoming increasingly popular nowadays. During the development and evolution of a web application, a typical type of tasks is to change the presentation of the web application, such as correcting display errors, adding user-interface controls, or changing appearance styles. To change the presentation of a static web page, developers are able to modify the HTML text of the web page using a graphical web-page editor. However, to change the presentation of a dynamic web application, instead of using a graphical web-page editor to directly modify generated web pages, developers need to modify the code that generates the web pages. As manually performing presentation changes in dynamic web applications is tedious and error-prone, we propose a novel approach based on collaborative hybrid analysis that combines static analysis and dynamic analysis to facilitate developers to perform presentation changes in dynamic web applications. Our approach includes two parts. The first part takes as input the presentation change to be performed on a generated web page (with proper runtime information), and uses dynamic string-origin analysis to locate the source-code segment that generates the changed part of the web page. The second part checks unexpected impact of directly performing the change on the source-code segment, and asks for human intervention when unexpected impact exists. We implemented our approach for the PHP language and carried out an empirical study on 39 presentation-change tasks identified from 600 bug reports of three real-world dynamic web applications (in total more than 148 KLOC). Among the 39 tasks, our approach is able to correctly locate the place to modify in each presentation-change task and correctly perform the presentation change on the source code in more than half of the tasks. © 2012 acm.

There is a growing body of work in HCI on the design of communication technologies to help support lovers in long distance relationships. We build upon this work by presenting an exploratory study of hand-holding prototypes. Our work distinguishes itself by basing distance communication metaphors on elements of familiar, simple co-located behaviours. We argue that the combined evocative power of unique co-created physical representations of the absent other can be used by separated lovers to generate powerful and positive experiences, in turn sustaining romantic connections at a distance.

This paper presents the second version of a mobile service robot (HealthBot) designed for older people. The lessons learned from studies of the first version of the robot at a retirement village, and design decisions for the second version, are discussed. Technical requirements of field trials, a focus on cognitive human-robot interactions, the importance of working together in a multidisciplinary team, and the necessity for rapid iterative development suggested a new software framework. The features of new framework are discussed and implementation details are presented. Details of field trials and user acceptance results are presented. Results are promising for older-user acceptance of the robot.

Interactive behaviors in GUIs are often described in terms of states, transitions, and constraints, where the constraints only hold in certain states. These constraints maintain relationships, among objects, control the graphical layout, and link the user interface to an underlying data model. However, no existing Web implementation technology provides direct support for all of these, so the code for maintaining constraints and tracking state may end up spread across multiple languages and libraries. In this paper we describe ConstraintJS, a system that integrates constraints and finite-state machines (FSMs) with Web languages. A key role for the FSMs is to enable and disable constraints based on the interface's current mode, making it possible to write constraints that sometimes hold. We illustrate that constraints combined with FSMs can be a clearer way of defining many interactive behaviors with a series of examples.

Smartphones are convenient, but their small screens make searching, clicking, and reading awkward. Thus, perusing product reviews on a smartphone is difficult. In response, we introduce RevMiner-a novel smartphone interface that utilizes Natural Language Processing techniques to analyze and navigate reviews. RevMiner was run over 300K Yelp restaurant reviews extracting attribute-value pairs, where attributes represent restaurant attributes such as sushi and service, and values represent opinions about the attributes such as fresh or fast. These pairs were aggregated and used to: 1) answer queries such as "cheap Indian food", 2) concisely present information about each restaurant, and 3) identify similar restaurants. Our user studies demonstrate that on a smartphone, participants preferred RevMiner's interface to tag clouds and color bars, and that they preferred Rev-Miner's results to Yelp's, particularly for conjunctive queries (e.g., "great food and huge portions").

Biological network analysis often aims at the target identification problem, which is to predict which molecule to inhibit (or activate) for a disease treatment to achieve optimum efficacy and safety. A related goal, arising from the increasing availability of high-throughput screening (hts), is to suggest many molecules as potential targets. The target prioritization problem is to predict a subset of molecules in a given disease-associated network which is likely to include successful drug targets. Sensitivity analysis prioritizes targets in a dynamic network model according to principled criteria, but fails to penalize off-target effects, and does not scale for large networks. In this demonstration, we present Pani (Putative TArget Nodes PrIoritization), a novel interactive system that addresses these limitations. It prunes and ranks the possible target nodes by exploiting concentration-time profiles and network structure (topological) information and visually display them in the context of the signaling network. Through the interactive user interface, we demonstrate various innovative features of Pani that enhance users' understanding of the prioritized nodes. Copyright © 2012 acm.

Interactive surfaces have great potential for co-located collaboration because of their ability to track multiple inputs simultaneously. However, the multi-user experience on these devices could be enriched significantly if touch points could be associated with a particular user. Existing approaches to user identification are intrusive, require users to stay in a fixed position, or suffer from poor accuracy. We present a non-intrusive, high-accuracy technique for mapping touches to their corresponding user in a collaborative environment. By mounting a high-resolution camera above the interactive surface, we are able to identify touches reliably without any extra instrumentation, and users are able to move around the surface at will. Our technique, which leverages the back of users' hands as identifiers, supports walk-up-and-use situations in which multiple people interact on a shared surface.

The paper presents a simple interactive software tool for computer aided state space control design developed in Matlab-Simulink for education in Master degree study programs Applied Mechatronics, Cybernetics and Robotics. Efficient task solving is supported by a Grafical user interface providing a usef-friendly interactive environment. The core of the software tool are control algorithms programmed as separate functions. The developed interactive tool has a modular structure and can be further extended. © 2012 IFAC.
