In this paper, we describe the findings of the NEON project - a cross-Nordic - Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland - project evaluating the usefulness of private versus public cloud services for HPC users. Our findings are briefly that private cloud technology is not mature enough yet to provide a transparent user experience. It is expected that this will be the case mid 2012. The cost efficiency of both public and private cloud should be continuously monitored as there is a strong downward trend. This conclusion is supported by NEON experimenting as well as larger initiatives e.g. StratusLab reports. Public cloud technology is mature enough but lacks certain features that will be necessary to include cloud resources in a transparent manner in a national infrastructure like the Norwegian NOTUR (***) case, e.g. with respect to quota management. These features are expected to emerge in 2011 via third party management software and in the best of breed public cloud services. Public clouds are competitive in the low end for non-HPC jobs (low memory, low number of cores) on price. A significant fraction (ca. 20%) of the jobs running on the current Nordic supercomputer infrastructure are potentially suitable for cloud-like technology. This holds in particular for singlethreaded or single-node jobs with small/medium memory requirements and non-intensive I/O. There is a backlog of real supercomputer jobs that suffers from the non-HPC jobs on the supercomputer infrastructure. Off-loading these non- HPC jobs to a public cloud would effectively add supercomputing capacity. Another finding is that available storage capacity is not accessible in a user-friendly way;most storage clouds are only accessible via programmable interfaces. A number of experiments and piloting are presented to support these claims. Copyright 2011 acm.

Many people learn how to use complex authoring applications through tutorials. However, userinterfaces for authoring tools differ between versions, platforms, and competing products, limiting the utility of tutorials. Our goal is to make tutorials more useful by enabling users to repurpose tutorials between similar applications. We introduce UI translation interfaces which enable users to locate commands in one application using the interface language of another application. Our end-user tool, ShowMeHow, demonstrates two interaction techniques to accomplish translations: 1) direct manipulation of interface facades and 2) text search for commands using the vocabulary of another application. We discuss tools needed to construct the translation maps that enable these techniques. An initial study (n=12) shows that users can locate unfamiliar commands twice as fast with interface facades. A second study showed that users can work through tutorials written for one application in another application.

The hardware capability and software functionality of sensor networks have continuously evolved. Apart from the merits brought by technological advances, this rapid upgrading pace poses great challenges to make heterogeneous sensor node platforms interoperate with each other. In this work, a service-oriented Application Programming interface (API) is proposed for wireless sensor networks to handle the heterogeneity and provide ubiquitous co-existence.

Autonomous Decentralized System (ADS) has been proposed for providing on-line expansion and maintenance and also fault-tolerance. The associated architecture is composed by a Data Field (DF - on this element, the information is flowing among all the elements connected to it) and Autonomous Control Processors (ACP - part of an entity where the information coming from the DF is prepro-cessed and manages data consistency and fault tolerance) with their Application software Module (ASM - part of an entity which processes the information belonging to its own tasks). We are developing an ADS Infrastructure that will permit us to integrate heterogeneous systems with the characteristics provided by this paradigm. We develop a software-Based DF composed of Nodes. Each Node is a software application with a simple communication protocol and a basic management userinterface. The nodes, all together, are responsible for forming a network communicating one with each others. The main task for each node is to identify any entity and redirect messages for delivery. In our infrastructure, the DF is the core of the architecture and since it is a software implementation there may exist several security risks such as intruders or apocryphal components which can pretend to belong to the system. In this paper we show the technology proposed for providing a secure DF which allows to identify and authenticate each component that pretends to connect to the DF.
Several visualization schemes have been developed for imaging materials at the atomic level through atom probe tomography. The main shortcoming of these tools is their inability to parallel process data using multi-co...

Faceted browsers offer an effective way to explore relationships and build new knowledge across data sets. So far, web-based faceted browsers have been hampered by limited feature performance and scale. QWIC, Quick Web interface Control, describes a set of design heuristics to address performance speed both at the interface and the backend to operate on large-scale sources.

In this research, we propose a shoe-shaped I/O interface. The benefits to users of wearable devices are significantly reduced if they are aware of them. Wearable devices should have the ability to be worn without requiring any attention from the user. However, previous wearable systems required users to be careful and be aware of wearing or carrying them. To solve this problem, we propose a shoe-shaped I/O interface. By wearing the shoes throughout the day, users soon cease to be conscious of them. Electromechanical devices are potentially easy to install in shoes. This report describes the concept of a shoe-shaped I/O interface, the development of a prototype system, and possible applications.

This poster presents a cursory look at the history of windows in Graphical userinterfaces. It examines the controversy between tiling and overlapping window managers and explains that controversy's sociological importance: windows are control devices, enabling their users to manage their activity and attention. It then explores a few possible reasons for the relative disappearance of windowing in recent computing devices. It concludes with a recapitulative typology.
