Multi-touch interfaces allow users to use multiple fingers to provide input to a graphical userinterface. The idea of allowing users to touch and manipulate digital information with their hands has been subject of research for more than 25 years. Recently several of these research artifacts have found their way to industry, with examples like the iPhone and the Microsoft Surface. Mainstream programming languages do not offer support to deal with the complexity of these new devices. Unlike the evolution in the hardware technology, the complexity of these new devices has not yet been addressed by adequate software engineering abstractions. Current multi-touch frameworks provide a narrow range of hardcoded functionality like pinch, rotate and move known as multi-touch gestures. There is however a substantial need to develop new and more gestures for domain specific applications. Multi-touch devices are inherently concurrent and provide a continuous stream of events. In many of these frameworks capturing these events to extract gestures is done by means of event handlers. Programming multi-touch devices with event handlers is cumbersome for a number of reasons.

Virtually every video watermarking technology can benefit from comparison with the original content. For non-blind schemes it is fundamental;for others it is an improvement to increase the watermark's signal-to-noise ratio by subtracting the content that is often noise to the detector. A direct frame-by-frame comparison of the videos is not possible due to the fact that illegal copies of videos usually differ significantly from their originals caused by different spatial resolution or frame rates, geometric distortions from capturing, or targeted attacks. In this paper, we present a software tool that enables the semi-automatic temporal and spatial synchronization of frames and pixels of two similar videos. This process is called registration. We put our focus on utilizing human capabilities with the smallest possible effort, to allow a high overall performance and precision of the registration. An efficient graphical userinterface supports the users and visualizes the results of all steps. In addition, we specifically distinguish digitally reproduced copies from analog (camcorded) copies in which two or more frames are blended into a new frame. Copyright 2010 acm.

Machine learning algorithms are key components in many cutting edge applications of computation. However, the full potential of machine learning has not been realized because using machine learning is hard, even for otherwise tech-savvy developers. This is because developing with machine learning is different than normal programming. My thesis is that developers applying machine learning need new general-purpose tools that provide structure for common processes and common pipelines while remaining flexible to account for variability in problems, m this paper, I describe my efforts to understanding the difficulties that developers face when applying machine learning. I then describe Gestalt, a general-purpose integrated development environment designed the application of machine learning. Finally, I describe work on developing a pattern language for building machine learning systems and creating new techniques that help developers understand the interaction between their data and learning algorithms.

WiFi networks have enjoyed an unprecedent penetration rate in recent years. However, due to the limited coverage, existing WiFi infrastructure only provides intermittent connectivity for mobile users. Once leaving the current network coverage, WiFi clients must actively discover new WiFi access points (APs), which wastes the precious energy of mobile devices. Although several solutions have been proposed to address this issue, they either require significant modifications to existing network infrastructures or rely on context information that is not available in unknown environments. In this work, we develop a system called ZiFi that utilizes ZigBee radios to identify the existence of WiFi networks through unique interference signatures generated by WiFi beacons. We develop a new digital signal processing algorithm called Common Multiple Folding (CMF) that accurately amplifies periodic beacons in WiFi interference signals. ZiFi also adopts a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector that can minimize the false negative (FN) rate of WiFi beacon detection while satisfying the user-specified upper bound on false positive (FP) rate. We have implemented ZiFi on two platforms, a Linux netbook integrating a TelosB mote through the USB interface, and a Nokia N73 smart-phone integrating a ZigBee card through the miniSD interface. Our experiments show that, under typical settings, ZiFi can detect WiFi APs with high accuracy (< 5% total FP and FN rate), short delay (similar to 780 ms), and little computation overhead.
