Most researches on oriental calligraphies simulation are based on the texture rendering methods with input from pointing devices. However, the traditional way is by using the hairy brush which is not employed in these applications. In this paper, we proposed a novel multimedia human computer interface that allows users which including artists to use the physical hairy brushes to write without training, so as to provide the same user experience. A virtual paper is projected on the transparent screen, the interface for using the hairy brush. An infra-red camera is used in capturing the image as the system input. A software framework was proposed to compute the contact region and the ink absorption between the ink-brush and the virtual paper. This information is highly useful in further rendering the texture of the brushstrokes and the ink spreading on the paper. © 2010 IEEE.

Recent research has indicated that human graph reading performance can be affected by the size of crossing angle. Crossing angle is closely related to another aesthetic criterion: number of edge crossings. Although crossing number has been previously identified as the most important aesthetic, its relative impact on performance of human graph reading is unknown, compared to crossing angle. In this paper, we present an exploratory user study investigating the relative importance between crossing number and crossing angle. This study also aims to further examine the effects of crossing number and crossing angle not only on task performance measured as response time and accuracy, but also on cognitive load and visualization efficiency. The experimental results reinforce the previous findings of the effects of the two aesthetics on graph comprehension. The study demonstrates that on average these two closely related aesthetics together explain 33% of variance in the four usability measures: time, accuracy, mental effort and visualization efficiency, with about 38% of the explained variance being attributed to the crossing angle. Although Human Computer Interaction (HCI) has been practised by Western countries over the last 40 years, very little is known about how HCI is being incorporated in Malaysian practices. We undertook a 12-week ethnographical study aimed at revealing HCI perceptions at different managerial levels in Information and Communication technology (ICT) departments and agencies in Malaysia. We describe and discuss the factors that either drive or impede technology managers towards HCI awareness, based on the nature of ICT-related/software development in Malaysia. The result of the study indicates that the developers and corporations' overall perception of HCI is influenced by their national and organizational culture. The lack of emphasis on usable interface design and scarce information regarding user studies and evaluation are major concerns. Within this context of developing countries, the difficulty of creating HCI awareness and adopting usability may be due to the complexity of the government's bureaucracy systems. We suggest that stakeholders and policy makers such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) are more relevant in influencing and/or reinforcing the incorporation of HCI in the workplace and enhancing the usability of the products and software created in the organization at the managerial level. © 2010 IEEE.

In November 2009 the researcher embarked on a project aimed at reducing the amount of paper used by Queensland University of technology (QUT) staff in their daily workplace activities. The key goal was to communicate to staff that excessive printing has a tangible and negative effect on their workplace and local environment. The research objective was to better understand what motivates staff towards more ecologically sustainable printing practises, whilst meeting their job's demands. The current study is built on previous research that found that one interface does not address the needs of all users when creating persuasive Human Computer Interaction (HCI) interventions targeting resource consumption. In response, the current study created and trialled software that communicates individual paper consumption in precise metrics. Based on preliminary research data different metric sets have been defined to address the different motivations and beliefs of user archetypes using descriptive and injunctive normative information. This paper presents automated billing of energy meter. It is just like postpaid mobile connection. In the proposed work, the front end is user friendly and one can work on this software with minimum knowledge of computers and can read the meter by sitting in the office. This is useful for billing purpose in electricity board authority. A GSM modem is connected to the energy meter. Each modem will be having its own sim (ususal mobile phone sim). A PC is connected to other modem, which contains the data base. The module is designed such that user can have the complete usage details about the energy meter. Just like postpaid mobile connections, one can know our due bill instantly and can even pay for it. The SIM card used is implemented in energy meter and it sends a message to the user about the due bill. A LCD is used in the hardware module for the user interface. The LCD displays the current usage and units consumed. After the usage of each unit the amount and total units will be incremented whenever user wants to know his/her bill he/she can message a given code to sim card attached to the meter and can know his/her present bill. The user can pay the amount just by knowing the given code which is fed in the meter. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper we organize multi-dimensional datasets with column-based approach instead of the traditional row-based method, each column referring to one dimension and we use bar axis in place of line axis to represent corresponding dimension. Then parallel coordinates with column-based cluster, bar axis density and other techniques is used to convey a large complex multi-dimensional dataset in a relative small screen through the following steps: (a) visualization of column-based clusters with user-defined granularity to simplify the corresponding dimension where we group all the data points into several discrete values;(b) several distinct colors to distinguish the lines contain different amount of data points;(c) opacity is introduced to visualization to tell the difference among the lines with the same color;(d) brand instead of polyline to reveal the centre and the extent of each cluster;(e) layer-based drawing technique to emphasize the heavy lines and to denote the trend of multi-dimensional datasets;(f) bar axis to provide special space to illustrate the density of the dataset on each axis. Anyway, our work has two primary goals: one is to convey large dataset with legible compact vivid visualization on a limited screen area. Writing reliable software is difficult. It becomes even more difficult when writing scientific software involving floating-point numbers. Computers provide numbers with limited precision;when confronted with a real whose precision exceeds that limit, they introduce approximation and error. Numerical analysts have developed sophisticated mathematical techniques for performing error and stability analysis of numerical algorithms. However, these are generally not accessible to application programmers or scientists who often do not have in-depth training in numerical analysis and who thus need more automated techniques to analyze their code. In this paper, we develop a novel, practical technique to help application programmers (or even numerical experts) obtain high-level information regarding the numerical stability and accuracy of their code. Our main insight is that by systematically altering (or perturbing) the underlying numerical calculation, we can uncover potential pitfalls in the numerical code. We propose two complementary perturbations to statistically measure numerical stability: value perturbation and expression perturbation. Value perturbation dynamically replaces the least significant bits of each floating-point value, including intermediate values, with random bits to statistically induce numerical error in the code. Expression perturbation statically changes the numerical expressions in the user program to mathematically equivalent (in the reals, likely not in floating-point numbers), but syntactically different forms. We then compare the executions of these "equivalent" forms to help discover and remedy potential instabilities. Value perturbation can overstate error, while expression perturbation is relatively conservative, so we use value perturbation to generate candidates for expression perturbation. Geospatial databases usually contain features of different geometries, associated with thematic attributes. The features have implicit spatial relationships which are not explicitly captured (unless the relationships have their own attributes, which is rare), and hence geospatial databases contain a few or no foreign keys. As geospatial data becomes more widely available and used by people, their keyword based querying will become an important interface. Keyword queries in geospatial data may be related to features and their attributes, or with multiple features, their spatial relationships, and their attributes. The keywords may refer to feature types as well as feature instances (e.g., "India capital" - here, capital is really a schema level data, i.e., metadata). We must note that keyword queries are not natural language queries. They just contain keywords that the user thinks characterize their expected result. Consequently, analyzing and disambiguating the keyword queries is important before answering them. Spatial relationships to be taken into account may have to be based and ranked on nearest-neighborhood. Finally, the query results need to be shown both textually as well as visually on a map. These requirements make keyword searching in geospatial data quite different from normal data. This paper describes our approach to supporting keyword queries. We describe query interpretation, query translation into one or more SQL queries, and query execution and result ranking. We describe how geo-spatial ontologies can be used in understanding implicit relationships between query objects, and how R-tree based indexes can be effectively used for result ranking based on spatial relationships. © 2010 acm.

Due to the wide diversity of unknown organisms in the environment, 99% of them cannot be grown in traditional culture medium in laboratories. Therefore, metagenomics projects are proposed to study microbial communities present in the environment, from molecular techniques, especially the sequencing. Thereby, for the coming years it is expected an accumulation of sequences produced by these projects. Thus, the sequences produced by genomics and metagenomics projects present several challenges for the treatment, storing and analysis such as: the search for clones containing genes of interest. This work presents the OCI Metagenomics, which allows defines and manages dynamically the rules of clone selection in metagenomic libraries, thought an algebraic approach based on process algebra. Furthermore, a web interface was developed to allow researchers to easily create and execute their own rules to select clones in genomic sequence database. This software has been tested in metagenomic cosmid library and it was able to select clones containing genes of interest. Copyright 2010 acm.

We will describe a dynamic federated autonomic networking system 1 for the testing of netcentric systems across organizations. Using a suite of policy-based management software tools, our system can provide netcentric missions with self-configuring, self-debugging, self-healing, and self-protecting capabilities across end-to-end coalition networks. The novelty of our system originates from: (1) A multi-party dynamic policy negotiation algorithm and protocol for autonomous cross-organization negotiations on network resources;(2) A RDF/XML based language to enable automated understanding of network and application configurations across organizations;(3) A teachable, natural language policy capture system;(4) An advanced user interface tool for capturing and representing domain expert knowledge;and (5) A reasoning system for distributing and applying domain knowledge. This system has been developed for large-scale netcentric systems testing applications where the rapid configuration and management of dynamically changing netcentric test exercises is critical. Using a scenario from a real test exercise involving test ranges around the country, we have demonstrated in our testbed that we could reduce the debugging time for a network configuration problem from 6 hours, involving dozens of operators, to less than 2 seconds with minimal human involvement. © 2010 IEEE.
