According to the aim of the COLOS project - where COLOS stands for 'COnceptual Learning Of Science' - which is to use and to promote the use of the potential of modern computer technology for a better and more direct approach towards intuitive presentation and understanding of basic concepts in science and technology [1] [2], we describe in this paper a method to decide a student's main type of category. In another step we explain in which way the human interface of a CAT/CAL (Computer Aided Teaching/Learning) product must be designed with respect to the considered type, that means to define a 'Learning Environment'. We present some principles enabling to adapt the interfaces of softwares to the users.

The requirements engineering research and consulting communities are not serving the interests of software developers who build off-the-shelf application software. Most of our models and methods evolved with the aid of funding from organizations interested in obtaining unique systems under contract and in which there is a clear interface between "customer" and "developer". These origins have spawned many assumptions about what requirements are. Through several design scenarios I illustrate how these assumptions break down in the case of off-the-shelf software. I then suggest some alternative priorities that would address these shortcomings. My aim is to provoke and stimulate thought, not to propose a developed solution.

SimSelect is a system developed for the purpose of providing support for users when selecting simulation software. SimSelect consists of a database which is linked to an interface developed using Visual Basic 3.0. The system queries a database and finds a simulation package suitable to the user, based on requirements which have been specified. It also provides a recommendation of alternative packages suitable to the user, and allows prioritisation of requirements in levels of importance. This paper provides an insight into the development of SimSelect, in addition to the reasoning behind the system.

The M-Machine is an experimental multicomputer being developed to test architectural concepts motivated by the constraints of modern semiconductor technology and the demands of programming systems. The M-Machine computing nodes are connected with a 3-D mesh network; each node is a multithreaded processor incorporating 12 function units, on-chip cache, and local memory. The multiple function units are used to exploit both instruction-level and thread-level parallelism. A user accessible message passing system yields fast communication and synchronization between nodes. Rapid access to remote memory is provided transparently to the user with a combination of hardware and software mechanisms. This paper presents the architecture of the M-Machine and describes how its mechanisms attempt to maximize both single thread performance and overall system throughput. The architecture is complete and the MAP chip, which will serve as the M-Machine processing node, is currently being implemented.
