The Proof AnimationTM family of animation software is designed to meet the animation needs for a vast array of applications. This product family runs on readily available, inexpensive PC hardware. Some of the overall features are general purpose architecture, ASCII file-driven, vector-based geometry with the ability to zoom in or out while maintaining crisp clear animations, post-processing for maximum performance, CAD-type drawing tools for ease of creating animations, and a unique presentation mode used for displaying the results of the study. Proof Animation is not tied to one specific simulation language. Because of its open architecture, Proof Animation can serve as the animation tool for models written in a wide variety of simulation and programming languages. Head-mounted displays, as popularized by virtual reality systems, offer the opportunity to immerse a user in a synthetically generated environment. While there is much anecdotal evidence that this is a qualitative jump in the userinterface, there is little quantitative data to establish that emersion improves task performance. The authors present the results of a user study: users performing a generic search task decrease task performance time by roughly half (42% reduction) when they change from a stationary display to a head-mounted display with identical properties (resolution, field-of-view, etc.). A second result is that users who practice with the head-mounted display reduce task completion time by 23% in later trials with the stationary display, suggesting a transfer effect.< >

The increased demand for telecommunication services, both in volume and diversity, encourage telecommunication administrations to install flexible access networks. A flexible access network, based on the newest technology (e.g., fiber transmission systems, software controiled access nodes) makes it possible to provide a broad range of subscriber interfaces and services. Modern operations systems will automate the provisioning and maintenance processes to a large extent, reducing the time to introduce and begin providing a service. A flexible access network requires standard interfaces to the rest of the telecommunications network and the operations systems. A new approach to the allocation of functions among the network elements of the access network and the rest of the telecommunications network is required to obtain a useful interface specification.

An early, practical application of IEEE storage-system-management work is being pursued at the National Storage Laboratory (NSL). Work has initiated to define basic management requirements and develop generalized graphical-user-interface tools using remote-procedure-call mechanisms to implement the NSL's conceptual management framework. Several constraints were imposed on the development of early versions of this work to maintain compatibility with the NSL's underlying UniTree-based software architecture and to provide timely prototypes and proof of concept. The project leverages the on-going standards work of the IEEE Storage System Standards Working Group and utilizes the ideas of previous, related efforts, including existing ISO (International Organization for standardization) management standards. It also explores some of the relationships and interactions between IEEE storage-system management and better-known management methods for distributed systems and networks.< >
