The challenge for the microarchitect has always been (with very few notable domain-specific exceptions) how to translate the continually increasing processing power provided by Moore's Law into increased performance, or more recently into similar performance at lower cost in energy. The mechanisms in the past (almost entirely) kept the interface intact and used the increase in transistor count to improve the performance of the microarchitecture of the uniprocessor. When that became too hard, we went to larger and larger on-chip caches. Both are consistent with the notion that "abstractions are good." At some point, we got overwhelmed with too many transistors; predictably, multi-core was born. As the transistor count continues to skyrocket, we are faced with two questions: what should be on the chip, and how should the software interface to it. If we expect to continue to take advantage of what process technology is providing, I think we need to do several things, starting with rethinking the notion of abstraction and providing multiple interfaces for the programmer.

EdgeWrite is a new unistroke text entry method for handheld devices designed to provide high accuracy and stability of motion for people with motor impairments. It is also effective for able-bodied people. An EdgeWrite user enters text by traversing the edges and diagonals of a square hole imposed over the usual text input area. Gesture recognition is accomplished not through pattern recognition but through the sequence of corners that are hit. This means that the full stroke path is unimportant and recognition is highly deterministic, enabling better accuracy than other gestural alphabets such as Graffiti. A study of able-bodied users showed subjects with no prior experience were 18% more accurate during text entry with Edge Write than with Graffiti (p>.05), with no significant difference in speed. A study of 4 subjects with motor impairments revealed that some of them were unable to do Graffiti, but all of them could do Edge Write. Those who could do both methods had dramatically better accuracy with Edge Write.

In this paper we describe QNAT, a software tool developed at Indian Institute of technology, Kanpur, India, for the analysis and simulation of queueing networks. Arbitrary configurations of open or closed networks of multi-server queues with infinite or finite capacity, fork-join queues with or without synchronization queues can be analyzed or simulated using QNAT. Queueing Networks with multiple classes of customers mall be specified with each class being a closed or an open class independently if there are finite capacity queues in the system, the type of blocking mechanism-transfer, repetitive service or rejection, can also be specified. For the applications where the accuracy of the results is important, an option to simulate the network is also provided. QNAT has proved to be a useful tool for the design of telecommunication systems, computer networks, modeling of industrial systems, design of banking systems, teaching courses and research on queueing theory etc. QNAT is a user-friendly analysis tool, developed with a Windows based Graphical user interface (GUI). Mathematica forms the computing platform for QNAT due to its ability to perform symbolic computation.

We present an open-source, realtime, embedded implementation of a foot-mounted, zero-velocity-update-aided inertial navigation system. The implementation includes both hardware design and software, uses off-the-shelf components and assembly methods, and features a standard USB interface. The software is written in C and can easily be modified to run user implemented algorithms. The hardware design and the software are released under permissive open-source licenses and production files, source code, documentation, and further resources are available at ***. The reproduction cost for a single unit is below $800, with the inertial measurement unit making up the bulk ($700). The form factor of the implementation is small enough for it to be integrated in the sole of a shoe. A performance evaluation of the system shows a position errors for short trajectories (

In this paper, we introduce a new style of visualization called Situational Visualization, in which the user of a robust, mobile visualization system uses mobile computing resources to enhance the experience and understanding of the surrounding world. Additionally, a Situational Visualization system allows the user to add to the visualization and any underlying simulation by inputting the user's observations of the phenomena of interest, thus improving the quality of visualization for the user and for any other users that may be connected to the same database. Situational Visualization allows many users to collaborate on a common set of data with real-time acquisition and insertion of data. In this paper, we present a Situational Visualization system we are developing called Mobile VGIS, and present two sample applications of Situational Visualization.

New information technology and an upgrade process are needed for a nuclear plant to have the capability of performing the extended scope of a plant information system. The current modular component technology is to be used for a next generation plant to achieve the extended plant information system function. This paper describes the realization of the new information system function by the Web interface technique in the project for the development of a liquid metal reactor, KALIMER (Korea Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor). The current plant information system in the KALIMER project, which currently supports design process, consists of a design information system, analysis information system, user interface management system and plant information database. The design information system manages all design documents and data in the design process. The analysis information system analyzes calculation results made for plant safety and performance. The user interface management system manages the interface among hardware, software and users. Using these systems supported, remote users can have access to design data and process data conveniently by the Web and the systems reduce the time and cost required for the access, and also improve data accuracy.

In 1995, the Singapore Armed Forces introduced the Patient Care Enhancement System (PACES), a computerised clinical management system. Linking 46 medical and dental clinics, PACES affords an all-electronic means of managing patient medical records, administrative functions and, through its external interface, logistics management for stock updates and supply. An executive information system also enables the collation of key epidemiological data for monitoring and analysis of trends in disease, injuries, workload and medical logistics. PACES has dramatically altered clinic management workflow and efficiency. Its effectiveness has been apparent to patient, doctor, staff and administrators. Apprehensive initial user acceptance has been alleviated through training. Current limitations are due to the proprietary nature of the aging software platform and the absence of links to external health agencies. Future PACES developments will account for these while integrating technology for digital imagery, soldier personal medical records and portable capabilities.

VisPad is a new haptics design for visualizing data, constructed from commodity massage chair pads with custom controllers and interfaces to a computer. It is an output device for information transmitted to a user who sits on the pad. The user interface is unique in that it has a large feedback area and is passive in nature, where unlike most current haptics devices, the user's hands are free to work on other things. VisPad can be used as the sole haptics device or can be used in conjunction with other haptics devices. We have tested the usefulness of VisPad in visualizing data by adding the VisPad interface to our protein structure-alignment program (ProtAlign) and performing usability studies. The data demonstrates that more information can be perceived at one time with our multi-modal presentation than with graphics-based visualization alone.
