BDD packages have matured to a state where they are often considered a commodity. Does this mean that all (publicly and commercially) available packages are equally good? Does this preclude any new developments? In this paper, we present a consumer report on 13 BDD packages and thereby try to answer these questions. We argue that there is a substantial spectrum in quality as measured by various metrics and we found that even the better packages do not always deploy the latest technology. We show how various design decisions underlying the studied packages exhibit themselves at the programming interface level, and we claim that this allows us to predict performance to a certain extent.

Less Cybersickness, Please: Demystifying and Detecting Stereoscopic Visual Inconsistencies in Virtual Reality Apps

The quality of Virtual Reality (VR) apps is vital, particularly the rendering quality of the VR Graphical user interface (GUI). Different from traditional two-dimensional (2D) apps, VR apps create a 3D digital scene for users, by rendering two distinct 2D images for the user’s left and right eyes, respectively. Stereoscopic visual inconsistency (denoted as “SVI”) issues, however, undermine the rendering process of the user’s brain, leading to user discomfort and even adverse health effects. Such issues commonly exist in VR apps but remain underexplored. To comprehensively understand the SVI issues, we conduct an empirical analysis on 282 SVI bug reports collected from 15 VR platforms, summarizing 15 types of manifestations of the issues. The empirical analysis reveals that automatically detecting SVI issues is challenging, mainly because: (1) lack of training data; (2) the manifestations of SVI issues are diverse, complicated, and often application-specific; (3) most accessible VR apps are closed-source commercial software, we have no access to code, scene configurations, etc. for issue detection. Our findings imply that the existing pattern-based supervised classification approaches may be inapplicable or ineffective in detecting the SVI issues. To counter these challenges, we propose an unsupervised black-box testing framework named StereoID to identify the stereoscopic visual inconsistencies, based only on the rendered GUI states. StereoID generates a synthetic right-eye image based on the actual left-eye image and computes distances between the synthetic right-eye image and the actual right-eye image to detect SVI issues. We propose a depth-aware conditional stereo image translator to power the image generation process, which captures the expected perspective shifts between left-eye and right-eye images. Grid computing is becoming a mainstream technology for large-scale distributed resource sharing and system integration. Workflow management is emerging as one of the most important grid services. In this work, a workflow management system for grid computing, called GridFlow, is presented, including a user portal and services of both global grid workflow management and local grid sub-workflow scheduling. Simulation, execution and monitoring functionalities are provided at the global grid level, which work on top of an existing agent-based grid resource management system. At each local grid, sub-workflow scheduling and conflict management are processed on top of an existing performance prediction based task scheduling system. A fuzzy timing technique is applied to address new challenges of workflow management in a cross-domain and highly dynamic grid environment. A case study is given and corresponding results indicate that local and global grid workflow management can coordinate with each other to optimise workflow execution time and solve conflicts of interest.

This paper presents the results of an R&D program conducted jointly by a small business and a university. The goal of the program is to develop a new methodology for IC process and device simulation. The core of the methodology is a software program called STADIUM, which enables process and device engineers to include in their designs the effects of manufacturing variation on product yield. STADIUM is used to develop statistical information about integrated circuit parameters using a statistical technique called design of experiments. The results of the simulation can then be related to potential failure modes and to product yield. This paper describes the algorithms and user interface contained in the software.

The user interface and system architecture of a novel interactive shared educational environment (ISEE) are presented. Based on a lightweight infrastructure, ISEE enables relatively low bandwidth network users to share videos as well as text messages. Smartlink is a new concept introduced. Individual information presentation components, like the video player and text chat room, are "smartly" linked together through video timestamps and hyperlinks. A field study related to children book selections using ISEE was conducted. The results indicated that the combination of three information presentation components, including video player with storyboard, shared browser, and text chat room, provided an effective and more comfortable collaboration and learning environment for the given tasks than text reviews or text chat alone or in combination. The video player was the most preferred information component. Text comments in the chat room that did not synchronize with the video content distracted some participants due to limited cognitive capacity. Using smartlink to synchronize various information components or "channels" is our attempt to reduce the user's working memory load in information enriched distance learning environments made possible by digital libraries.

The M-Machine is an experimental multicomputer being developed to test architectural concepts motivated by the constraints of modern semiconductor technology and the demands of programming systems. The M-Machine computing nodes are connected with a 3-D mesh network; each node is a multithreaded processor incorporating 12 function units, on-chip cache, and local memory. The multiple function units are used to exploit both instruction-level and thread-level parallelism. A user accessible message passing system yields fast communication and synchronization between nodes. Rapid access to remote memory is provided transparently to the user with a combination of hardware and software mechanisms. This paper presents the architecture of the M-Machine and describes how its mechanisms attempt to maximize both single thread performance and overall system throughput. The architecture is complete and the MAP chip, which will serve as the M-Machine processing node, is currently being implemented.

XML information retrieval (XML-IR) systems differ from traditional information retrieval systems by using structure of XML documents to retrieve more specific units of information than the documents themselves. users interact with XML-IR systems via structured queries that express their content and structural requirements. Historically, it has been common belief within the XML-IR community that structured queries will perform better than traditional keyword-only queries. However, recent system-orientated analysis has show that this assumption may be incorrect when system performance is averaged over a set of queries. Here, we test this assumption with users via a simulated work task experiment. We compare a keyword only interface with two user friendly XML-IR interfaces: NLPX, a natural language interface and Bricks, a query-bytemplate interface. This is the first time that a XML-IR natural language interface has been tested in user experiments. We compare the retrieval performance of all three interfaces and the usability of the two structured interfaces. Our results correspond to those of the system-orientated evaluation and indicate that structured queries do not aid retrieval performance. They also show that in terms of retrieval performance and usability the structured interfaces are comparable.

The popularity of Android software has grown dramatically in the last few years. It is essential for researchers in programming languages and compilers to contribute new techniques in this increasingly important area. Such techniques require a foundation of program analyses for Android. The target of our work is static object reference analysis, which models the flow of object references. Existing reference analyses cannot be applied directly to Android because the software is component-based and *** Android application is driven by a graphical user interface (GUI), with GUI objects responding to user actions. These objects and the event handlers associated with them ultimately determine the possible flow of control and data. We propose the first static analysis to model GUI-related Android objects, their flow through the application, and their interactions with each other via the abstractions defined by the Android platform. A formal semantics for the relevant Android constructs is developed to provide a solid foundation for this and other analyses. Next, we propose a constraint-based reference analysis based on the semantics. The analysis employs a constraint graph to model the flow of GUI objects, the hierarchical structure of these objects, and the effects of relevant Android operations. Experimental evaluation on real-world Android applications strongly suggests that the analysis achieves high precision with low *** analysis enables static modeling of control/data flow that is foundational for compiler analyses, instrumentation for event/interaction profiling, static error checking, security analysis, test generation, and automated debugging. It provides a key component to be used by compile-time analysis researchers in the growing area of Android software.

In this paper, we propose GameBlockchain, an open-source blockchain framework designed to support secure transactions of NFTs in modern computer games. Its purpose is to enable game industry stakeholders such as game developers, content creators, and regular gamers to create and exchange game assets in a more secure and trusted environment. The security of traditional databases and potential data tampering or dangerous user behavior is improved, as outlined in the paper, by blockchain technology, which is used to record critical operations in a ledger, preserving the identity of the user at all times. From a technical perspective, the main goal is to provide an architecture that is easy to use, flexible, understandable, and has an extensible SDK. Using the framework, game developers and regular users should be able to create and trade assets without third-party providers, and use all related services directly in the game interface itself, without having to switch between applications or pay additional transfer fees to providers. We also encourage the development of games with shared marketplaces and wallets on both the developer and user sides, making it easier to monetize assets and services.
