Conventional PMR style radio receivers based on analog technology receive one frequency channel at any one time. This paper presents an alternative digital solution which currently allows up to 16 simultaneous 12.5 kHz spaced FDM channels to be demodulated to ETSI-B type approval standards, and uses conventional, currently available cost effective componentry. Arbitrary modulation formats per channel are supported. Technical issues up to and including the analog to digital converter (ADC) interface are discussed.

System administrators are specialized workers and computer users. As skilled workers in complex and high-risk environments, intuition tells us this unique user group may have requirements of the systems and software they use that differ from the requirements of regular computer users. An examination of system administrator work practices sheds light on the system attributes and characteristics they need to do their jobs. Through shadowing, interviews, and a review of previous system administrator studies, we present information and system quality attributes that appear to be important to system administrators. Following a discussion of these attributes, we present a model of user satisfaction that provides actionable guidance and an integration of the attributes. We close with a discussion of the research findings and a call for future research in this area.

System-level events, such as process switching and task migration, have a major effect on the performance of computer systems. "Smart" is a new simulation environment that extends existing simulators, such as MINT, with the capability to emulate the effect of such mechanisms. "Smart" provides a user friendly interface (GUI) that allows control of different system parameters and mechanisms e.g. the type of cache coherency protocols, cache organization, scheduling policies of processes and threads, etc. The Smart environment can be used either for monitoring, analyzing and measuring different system events, or as a powerful visual based debugging tool. This paper describes the "Smart" environment and demonstrates the importance of simulating system-level mechanisms and events in order to understand the overall performance of modern architectures. The Smart simulator presented here was developed to support the simulation of shared memory architectures, and we indicate that similar software environments can be developed to simulate other parallel and distributed architectures as well.

For the effective and early diagnosis of brain diseases, we have developed an evaluation system for brain function using an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) method. This evaluation system benefits greatly from the newly emerged Grid. To embody a Grid environment, a Globus grid toolkit has been utilized as a building block. In this research we have distributed the computational workload for the ICA on a Globus based Grid environment composed of two Alpha cluster systems and a personal computer. In addition, in order to allow scientists and application developers to easily build the Grid-enabled system, we also have adopted a Grid-enabled-Message Passing interface, called MPICH-G. An introduction of MPICH-G to the medical analysis system on a Grid environment makes it possible for a naïve user to realize rapid analysis without special knowledge of the Grid. Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a highly sophisticated medical technology, is used for the measurement of brain function. The proposed method has the ability to integrate various geographically distributed resources and to analyze functional brain data from MEG

Our research team developed a test question browser app for test-takers with print disabilities. This technology had to fully overcome three challenges: (1) the characteristic rigorousness and fairness demanded of East Asian university entrance exams, (2) problems inherent in assistive technologies for persons with print disabilities, and (3) the unique demands of the Japanese language in accurately displaying text and reading it aloud.

To create successful interactive systems, userinterface designers need to cooperate with developers and application domain experts in an interdisciplinary team. These groups, however, usually miss a common terminology to exchange ideas, opinions, and *** paper presents an approach that uses pattern languages to capture this knowledge in software development, HCI, and the application domain. A formal, domain-independent definition of design patterns allows for computer support without sacrificing readability, and pattern use is integrated into the usability engineering life *** an example, experience from building an award-winning interactive music exhibit was turned into a pattern language, which was then used to inform follow-up projects and support HCI education.

A large number of memory accesses in memory-bound applications are irregular, such as pointer dereferences, and can be effectively targeted by thread-based prefetching techniques like Speculative Precomputation. These techniques execute instructions, for example on an available SMT thread context, that have been extracted directly from the program they are trying to accelerate. Proposed techniques typically require manual user intervention to extract and optimize instruction sequences. This paper proposes Dynamic Speculative Precomputation, which performs all necessary instruction analysis, extraction, and optimization through the use of back-end instruction analysis hardware, located off the processor's critical path. For a set of memory limited benchmarks an average speedup of 14% is achieved when constructing simple p-slices, and this gain grows to 33% when making use of aggressive optimizations.

The touchable online shopping system we propose enables users can touch a virtual commodity with their own hands. One purpose of our proposal is to evaluate whether it is easy to measure the size and weight of the commodity intuitively only with small-scale size and low-price elements. Another is to make a general-purpose system only with them for general applications. With such virtual reality, we used a data-glove with vibrators and a simple force feedback device to cover any impressions such as interface interference during use. We evaluated whether users can measure the size and weight of a virtual commodity. Using this system, we found that users could measure them similar to the use of real ones.

Abstract: This paper presents the hardware implementation of a multiplatform control system for house automation using FPGAs. Such a system belongs to a domain usually named domotics or smart house systems. The approach combines hardware and software technologies. The system is controlled through the Internet and the home devices being connected use the CAN control protocol. users can remotely control their houses using a web browser (Client). Locally, instructions received from the Client are translated by the Server, which distributes the commands to the domestic appliances. The implemented system has the following characteristics, which distinguish it from existing approaches: (i) the client interface is automatically updated; (ii) a standard communication protocol (CAN) is used in the hardware implementation, providing reliability and error control; (iii) new appliances are easily inserted in the system; (iv) system security is provided by user authentication; (v) user rights can be set up by an administration interface.

From its beginning, the technology of personal workstations has been driven by visions of a future in which people would work in intimate partnership with computer systems on significant intellectual tasks. These visions have been expressed in various forms: Memex (Bush, 1945), Man-Machine Symbiosis (Licklider, 1960), NLS (Engelbart, 1963), Dynabook (Kay, 1977), and *** tight coupling between human and computer required by these visions necessitated advances in the ways humans and computers interact. These advances have slowly begun to accumulate into what might be called a usertechnology. This usertechnology includes hardware and software techniques for building effective userinterfaces: bitmapped displays, menus, pointing devices, “modeless” command languages, animation, and interface metaphors. But it must include a technical understanding of the user himself and of the nature of human-computer interaction. This latter part, the scientific base of usertechnology, is necessary in order to understand why interaction techniques are (or are not) successful, to help us invent new techniques, and to pave the way for machines that aid humans in performing significant intellectual *** this paper, we trace some of the history of our understanding of users and their interaction with workstation—the personal part of personal workstations. In keeping with the spirit of other papers at this conference, we have centered this review around our own experiences, perspectives, and work and have not attempted a complete history of the field. In concentrating on our own work, we do not wish to mimimize the importance of others' work; we simply want to tell our own story. Our focus is on what we have learned about users in our years of studying them and how we see our findings relating to the original visions of the personal workstation.
