SmartFusion2 Family of FPGAs from MicroSemi introduces novel Silicon technology that enables minimally intrusive, spatial debug capabilities. Spatial debug concerns itself with observing and controlling sequential elements in the user?s Design Under Test (DUT) at an instant of time, i.e. in a specific clock cycle. This capability is made possible by the in-situ, always available probe network running at 50MHz in Smartfusion2. Observing and controlling DUT is less intrusive than conventional methods. Furthermore, no instrumentation and no re-programming of the FPGA device is required. This reduces the number of debug iterations (test re-runs) and accelerates design bring-up in the *** session showcases a technique to debug pseudo-static signals, i.e. sequential elements that remain static over a duration of time spanning many clock cycles of probe network (50MHz). Partial or entire set of sequential logic in the DUT can be read out via the JTAG or the SPI interface, while the DUT is running. This technique of observation is non-intrusive.A method to debug DUT using clock halting is presented. In such a method, the clock of the DUT is halted based on a trigger signal that is external or internal to the DUT. The trigger signal can be dynamically chosen without re-programming the device. Once the trigger fires, and clock is halted using a glitchless clock gate, any portion of the sequential logic in the DUT can be written to (altered) and then if required, the user clock can be gated ON to resume normal operation. Though somewhat intrusive, this technique of controlling hard to reach DUT states is invaluable in certain debug situations.

CAISARTS (Conceptual, Analytical, and Implementation Scheduling Advice for Real-Time Systems) is a rule-based system used by real-time application designers to obtain expert assistance for all aspects of the design related to scheduling: granularity of tasks, allocation of tasks, choice and analysis of scheduling paradigm, analysis of overheads of particular operating systems and scheduling paradigms, and code templates for tasks. The rule base is partitioned; subsets of the rule base can be selected for firing, thus enabling the user to ask CAISARTS for advice and analysis relevant for different phases of the design. In contrast to existing real-time tools, CAISARTS attempts to cover the entire design process related to scheduling without focusing on, for example, solely schedulability analysis. A unique feature of CAISARTS is that its rule base is extensible by the user-a graphical interface is used to add new rules as new real-time results are identified. Challenges in the design of the initial rule set include how to design and partition the rule base so that it can be both easily modifiable and readily usable by the user in choosing rules to fire; how to encode rules that are inherently contradictory; how to encode ambiguous knowledge; and how to make the rules both comprehensive and precise. The effectiveness of CAISARTS is shown through its use on a representative distributed real-time system scenario with end-to-end constraints.

We present IVORY a newly developed, platform-independent framework for physics based visualization. IVORY is especially designed for information visualization applications and multidimensional graph layout. It is fully implemented in Java 1.1 and its architecture features client server setup, which allows us to run the visualization even on thin clients. In addition, VRML 2.0 exports can be viewed by any VRML plugged-in WWW browser. Individual visual metaphors are invoked into IVORY via an advanced plug-in mechanism, where plug-ins can be implemented by any experienced user. The configuration of IVORY is accomplished using a script language, called IVML. Some interactive visualization examples, such as the integration of a haptic interface illustrate the performance and versatility of our system. Our current implementation supports NT 4.0.

As software Distributed Shared Memory(DSM) systems become attractive on larger clusters, the focus of attention moves toward improving the reliability of systems. In this paper, we propose a lightweight logging scheme, called remote logging, and a recovery protocol for home-based DSM. Remote logging stores coherence-related data to the volatile memory of a remote node. The logging overhead can be moderated with high-speed system area network and user-level DMA operations supported by modern communication protocols. Remote logging tolerates multiple failures if the backup nodes of failed nodes are alive. It makes the reliability of DSM grow much higher. Experimental results show that our fault-tolerant DSM has low overhead compared to conventional stable logging and it can be effectively recovered from some concurrent failures.

The number of underwater activities and experiments in tropical waters has been growing; people are increasingly becoming interested in the development of underwater applications that rely on acoustic communications. Ambient noise is a limiting factor in the performance of underwater acoustic detection and communication systems at shallow water. Knowledge of ambient noise characteristics at a location can be helpful for ambient noise imaging systems like ROMANIS, built at Acoustic Research Laboratory. The Singapore straits and surrounding waters contain some of the busiest shipping channels in the world. Monitoring of ambient noise is of crucial interest to acousticians and oceanographers due to the high level of shipping and snapping shrimp noise in the region. Since there was no such systematic ambient noise database existing to support oceanographers and acousticians, the Acoustic Research Laboratory (ARL) at the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) has embarked on developing a shallow water ambient noise database. This Graphical user interface (GUI)-based database benefit and enhance the research and development of marine acoustic systems. This paper describes the collection of ambient noise data and the structured compilation of this information into a useful database. The data collected covers a frequency range of 11-8300 Hz. The data is indexed and stored in a database and presented to the user via a GUI. The GUI uses an approach similar to typical Geographical Information System (GIS) databases. The user is able to select different layers of information on a map. The user may search for ambient noise data based on various parameters such as location of data collections or classification of the environment. The GUI is also integrated with Matlab/sup /spl reg//, popular mathematical analysis software, to display the time series, power spectral density and 1/3/sup rd/ octave spectrogram of the ambient noise data. The Perceptive Workbench enables a spontaneous, natural and unimpeded interface between the physical and virtual worlds. It uses vision-based methods for interaction that eliminate the need for wired input devices and wired tracking. Objects are recognized and tracked when placed on the display surface. Through the use of multiple light sources, the object's 3D shape can be captured and inserted into the virtual interface. This ability permits spontaneity since either preloaded objects or those objects selected on-the-spot by the user can become physical icons. Integrated into the same vision-based interface is the ability to identify 3D hand position, pointing direction and sweeping arm gestures. Such gestures can enhance selection, manipulation and navigation tasks. In this paper, the Perceptive Workbench is used for augmented reality gaming and terrain navigation applications, which demonstrate the utility and capability of the interface.

Cluster platforms offer good computational performance, but they still cannot utilize the potential of Gbit/s communication technology. While the speed of the Ethernet has grown to 1 Gbit/s, the functionality and the architectural support in the network interfaces has remained the same for more than a decade, so that the memory system becomes a limiting factor. To sustain the raw network speed in applications, a "zero-copy" network interface architecture would be required, but, for all widely used stacks, a last copy is required for the (de)fragmentation of the transferred network packets, since Ethernet packets are smaller than a page size. Correctly defragmenting packets of various communication protocols in hardware is an extremely complex task. We therefore consider a speculative defragmentation technique that can eliminate the last defragmenting copy operation in zero-copy TCP/IP stacks on existing hardware. The payload of fragmented packets is separated from the headers and stored in a memory page that can be mapped directly to its final destination in user memory. To evaluate our ideas, we integrated a network interface driver with speculative defragmentation into an existing protocol stack and added well-known page remapping and fast buffer strategies. Measurements indicate that we can improve the performance for a Gigabit Ethernet over a standard Linux 2.2 TCP/IP stack by a factor of 1.5-2 for uninterrupted burst transfers. Furthermore, our study demonstrates good speculation success rates for a database and a scientific application code on a cluster of PCs.

EarSketch (http://***) is a free integrated curriculum, software toolset, audio loop library, and social sharing site that teaches computing principles through digital music composition and remixing. EarSketch students write code in either Python or JavaScript to make music, with a focus on popular genres such as hip hop and dubstep, while learning computing concepts such as variables, iteration, conditionals, strings, lists, functions, and recursion. Attendees to this demonstration session will be introduced to a new web-based version of EarSketch that integrates a code editor, digital audio workstation (DAW) music production interface, curriculum browser, and sharing service into a single integrated browser-based learning environment. This demo is of interest to secondary and early post secondary CS educators and to computing education researchers interested in STEAM and/or broadening participation. No prior musical knowledge or experience is expected and no prior programming experience with Python or JavaScript is required.

Unlike desktop systems, embedded systems use different user interface technologies; have significantly smaller form factors; use a wide variety of processors; and have very tight constraints on power/energy consumption, user response time, and physical space. With its platform independence and secure execution environment, Java is fast becoming the language of choice for programming embedded systems. In order to extend its use to array based applications from embedded image and video processing, Java programmers need to employ several optimizations. Unfortunately, due to its precise exception mechanism and bytecode distribution form, it is not generally possible to use classical loop based optimization techniques for array based embedded Java applications. Observing this, this paper proposes a dynamic memory layout optimization strategy for Java applications. The strategy is based on observing the cache behavior dynamically and transforming memory layouts of arrays, when necessary, during the course of execution. This is in contrast to many previously proposed memory layout optimization strategies, which are static in nature (i.e., they are applied at compile time). Our results indicate large performance improvements on a suite of seven array based applications.

This paper introduces a conversational framework that enhances the usability of smart energy system simulations. This study is centered around OpenAI's Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), a fine-tuned conversational model that allows users to communicate with the system in a natural way. Therefore, users can describe their simulation scenarios in plain language and GPT seamlessly translates these descriptions into Python scripts, used as inputs to the simulation environment, in our case, AnyLogic Simulation software. Our framework is based on the i7-AnyEnergy core framework to compute distribution flows and relevant statistics. The proposed human-machine interface facilitates and accelerates simulation modeling, as demonstrated through the two scenarios we have provided in this paper. Overall, our conversational framework has the potential to significantly improve the user experience of smart energy system simulation environments. By simplifying the interaction between users and complex simulation models, we enable users to obtain valuable insights rapidly and more easily.
