The Proof Animation 2.1 product family provides our customers with the tools for animating a vast array of applications. There is a version of Proof Animation to meet any need, from small and mid-sized projects to large scale applications. This product family runs on readily available, inexpensive PC hardware without the need for special hardware. Proof Animation is ASCII file-driven and features a general purpose design. Its vector-based geometry provides a large animation canvas with the ability to zoom in or out while maintaining crisp, clear images. The number of end-users using the Internet is increasing in and out of offices. End-user-initiative development of applications has become important for automation of tasks. Applications for Web services should be supported by business professionals themselves because Web services must be modified frequently. This paper describes end-user-initiative application development methodologies for the MOON (multiagent-oriented office network) systems including window work in B-to-C and B-to-B electronic commerce. Window work is considered as a metaphor of the interface between service providers and their clients for Web services. The front-end of the system is constructed by a multi-agent framework. The back-end is developed by modeling techniques. The multi-agent framework is a Java application framework and is designed based on the simple concept that "one service is equal to one form." It provides form-based interfaces as a common XML-based protocol of {who, what, how} for end-users, which corresponds to the UDDI protocol of {white, yellow, green} pages. Form transformation from input to output implies service integration. Prototyping for the front-end system and the back-end system is performed in Java and XML.

As tools for design get increasingly complex and powerful, it is increasingly important that their users have a solid grounding in what it is these tools do and how they do it. When these tools are software engineering tools, we can assume that their users have formal training in computing. However, when the tools are for designing art or multimedia objects, the artists using the tools typically don't have much background in the computing technology they are using. While interdisciplinary design teams can work around the shortcomings of individual team members, they might be more effective teams if they shared a common language and understanding of certain key aspects of the design process. At the University of Washington we have begun a project to study the use of the theory of problem solving as shared knowledge by design teams engaged in creating of multimedia games. The theory we used is derived from early work in artificial intelligence. The concepts of state space, search, operators and evaluation functions are key components of the shared knowledge. The theory is embodied in a software system called T-STAR (Transparent STate-spaces search ARchitecture) which supports a collaborative interface for problem-solving. A key question for the project is "to what extent will interdisciplinary design teams adopt and exploit the theory of problem solving when given an opportunity to do so?"

In the BlueView project, digital library services are developed and partially implemented based on the architecture of virtual document servers. Using standard tools like full-text databases or information retrieval systems, object-relational database management systems, and replication and caching services, different heterogeneous local document servers have been integrated into one virtual server. Access to heterogeneous local systems can now be performed via a single query interface, integrating features of database query systems and information retrieval or search services. BlueView distributed query processing allows for combining structured queries against meta data with content-based (text retrieval) queries against full-text collections. Legacy systems such as existing preprint servers, search engines, or meta data (catalog) systems can also be integrated. Meta data and full-text documents can be replicated within this distributed architecture. In particular, in the view of members of a certain university, metadata and documents can be replicated to a local document server and integrated under different local user views. Aspects such as terms and conditions, licenses, diverse versions of documents, different formats, and data structures are considered as well. As application scenarios, preprint servers in Mathematics and the acm SIGMOD Anthology as local document servers have been integrated into a virtual document server.

Distributed systems and databases are at the core of the information society and increasingly pervade many aspects of our daily lives. While mobility and pervasiveness require support for systems that adapt themselves to changing environments, the middleware infrastructures become more and more heterogeneous and complex. In addition, we can see an increasing demand for dependability of such systems, taking into account the software as well as the surrounding environment. Generally, adaptiveness can either satisfy a change in user requirements or seek to fulfill the same requirements in a changing system context and environment. In particular, adaptation is also a means to achieve dependability in a computing infrastructure with dynamically varying structure and properties. Fault tolerance can consequently be seen as a special case, where the adaptation seeks to overcome an otherwise negative effect of a change in the computing infrastructure that can be classified as a fault. However, dependability can not only be achieved by fault tolerance, but also by other means like fault avoidance (e.g. through formal methods). Therefore, future middleware needs to support adaptiveness and dependability while maintaining scalability and mastering complexity. Still, software legacy must be integrated in a way, such that open and standardized interfaces support not only functional integration, but also a seamless integration of non-functional aspects. Moreover, service-oriented architectures need coordination in order to achieve dependability and can further benefit from context-aware approaches.

Persistent memory (PMem) is a low-latency storage technology connected to the processor memory bus. The Direct Access (DAX) interface promises fast access to PMem, mapping it directly to processes' virtual address spaces. However, virtual memory operations (e.g., paging) limit its performance and scalability. Through an analysis of Linux/x86 memory mapping, we find that current systems fall short of what hardware can provide due to numerous software inefficiencies stemming from OS assumptions that memory mapping is for *** this paper we propose DaxVM, a design that extends the OS virtual memory and file system layers leveraging persistent memory attributes to provide a fast and scalable DAX-mmap interface. DaxVM eliminates paging costs through pre-populated file page tables, supports faster and scalable virtual address space management for ephemeral mappings, performs unmappings asynchronously, bypasses kernel-space dirty-page tracking support, and adopts asynchronous block pre-zeroing. We implement DaxVM in Linux and the ext4 file system targeting x86-64 architecture. DaxVM mmap achieves 4.9× higher throughput than default mmap for the Apache webserver and up to 1.5× better performance than read system calls. It provides similar benefits for text search. It also provides fast boot times and up to 2.95× better throughput than default mmap for PMem-optimized key-value stores running on a fragmented ext4 image. Despite designed for direct access to byte-addressable storage, various aspects of DaxVM are relevant for efficient access to other high performant storage mediums.

To allow the number of simultaneous participants and applications to grow, many Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVE) platforms are combining ideas such as loose consistency, absence of central servers and world sub-partitioning with IP multicasting. For long distance connections, most of these systems rely on the existence of the Internet multicast backbone - the MBone. However, its generality and complexity is often an obstacle to the establishment and testing of large-scale CVEs. This paper presents the DIVEBONE, an application-level network architecture built as a stand-alone part of the DIVE toolkit [5]. The DIVEBONE is an application-level backbone that can interconnect sub-islands with multicast connectivity and/or single local networks. Furthermore, the DIVEBONE allows for visual analysis of the connection architecture and network traffic and for remote maintenance operations. The DIVEBONE capabilities have been demonstrated and successfully used in a series of large-scale pan-European tests over the Internet, as well as in various experiments involving IP over ISDN and ATM. All trials have proven the qualitative and quantitative adequacy of the DIVEBONE in heterogeneous settings where multicast connectivity in other ways is limited.

The presenters will demo a web-based Data Science Learning Platform (DSLP) that makes data science education accessible to students with limited or no programming background. The DSLP platform offers students with several benefits such as: (1) learn a web-based user interface to perform data science tasks without requiring coding, (2) explore popular Python data science libraries (e.g., Pandas, Matplotlib, Numpy, or Scikit-Learn) through real-time code exemplification to prepare them for advanced data science topics, (3) become familiar with the on-site user guide and helpful tips to make the platform easy to use, (4) write their own code within a sandbox, and (5) monitor their own progress by tracking their platform usage. The demo will walk through the steps of using the DSLP to perform various data science tasks and the participants will be able to try out the features mentioned above. The demo will also cover the design of course materials, including hands-on practices and lab assignments using the DSLP platform. The typical participants include instructors who are interested in teaching introductory-level data science to high school students or non-computing college majors with little or no programming background. Participants need to have a laptop with access to the Internet to attend the hands-on exercises workshop. The laptop should have a current web browser (e.g., Safari or Chrome) installed to access the web-based learning platform. This demo describes work supported by the National Science Foundation under Award 2021287.

This paper demonstrates the application of graph drawing and information visualisation techniques to the visualisation of information which can be modelled as an attributed graph. An attributed graph can be used to model a wide range of different types of information, including system descriptions and database content. We propose the novel Composable Layouts and Visual Sets (CLOVIS) class of views, and describe supporting software component infrastructure, including a user interface for creating and interacting with CLOVIS views. A framework for composing graph vertex layouts is presented, including the division of responsibilities between the layout strategies being composed and the mechanism for coordinating their execution. Three broad classes of layout strategy are identified, and opportunities for novel hybrid layouts highlighted. The definition of sets of graph elements and the allocation or overlaying of distinctive visual attributes to members of the set are combined under the notion of a visual set. A visual querying mechanism for the allocation of graph elements to visual sets and for the clustering of graph vertices in preparation for layout composition is described. The versatility of the CLOVIS view family is demonstrated through its application to a variety of problem domains, and future research directions are identified.

Powerful commodity systems and networks offer a promising direction for high performance computing because they are inexpensive and they closely track technology progress. However, high, raw-hardware performance is rarely delivered to the end user. Previous work has shown that the bottleneck in these architectures is the overheads imposed by the software communication layer. To reduce these overheads, researchers have proposed a number of user-space communication models. The common feature of these models is that applications have direct access to the network, bypassing the operating system in the common case and thus avoiding the cost of send/receive system *** this paper we examine five user-space communication layers, that represent different points in the configuration space: Generic AM, BIP-0.92, FM-2.02, PM-1.2, and VMMC-2. Although these systems support different communication paradigms and employ a variety of different implementation tradeoffs, we are able to quantitatively compare them on a single testbed consisting of a cluster of high-end PCs connected by a Myrinet *** find that all five communication systems have very low latency for small messages, in the range of 5 to 17 µs. Not surprisingly, this range is strongly influenced by the functionality offered by each system. We are encouraged, however, to find that features such as protected and reliable communication at user level and multiprogramming can be provided at very low cost. Bandwidth, however, depends primarily on how data is transferred between host memory and the network. Most of the investigated libraries support zero-copy protocols for certain types of data transfers, but differ significantly in the bandwidth delivered to end users. The highest bandwidth, between 95 and 125 MBytes/s for long message transfers, is delivered by libraries that use DMA on both send and receive sides and avoid all data copies.
