Augmenting human action videos with visual effects often requires professional tools and skills. To make this more accessible by novice users, existing attempts have focused on automatically adding visual effects to faces and hands, or let virtual objects strictly track certain body parts, resulting in rigid-looking effects. We present PoseTween, an interactive system that allows novice users to easily add vivid virtual objects with their movement interacting with a moving subject in an input video. Our key idea is to leverage the motion of the subject to create pose-driven tween animations of virtual objects. With our tool, a user only needs to edit the properties of a virtual object with respect to the subject's movement at keyframes, and the object is associated with certain body parts automatically. The properties of the object at intermediate frames are then determined by both the body movement and the interpolated object keyframe properties, producing natural object movements and interactions with the subject. We design a user interface to facilitate editing of keyframes and previewing animation results. Our user study shows that PoseTween significantly requires less editing time and fewer keyframes than using the traditional tween animation in making pose-driven tween animations for novice users.

Head worn displays are often used in situations where users’ hands may be occupied or otherwise unusable due to permanent or situational movement impairments. Hands-free interaction methods like voice recognition and gaze tracking allow accessible interaction with reduced limitations for user ability and environment. Tongue gestures offer an alternative method of private, hands-free and accessible interaction. However, past tongue gesture interfaces come in intrusive or otherwise inconvenient form factors preventing their implementation in head worn displays. We present a multimodal tongue gesture interface using existing commercial headsets and sensors only located in the upper face. We consider design factors for choosing robust and usable tongue gestures, introduce eight gestures based on the criteria and discuss early work towards tongue gesture recognition with the system.

Current workflow on co-editing and simultaneous presentation of 3-D shapes is confined to on-screen manipulation, which causes loss of perceived information when presenting perceptual concepts or complex shapes between members. Thus, we create TeleSHift, a 3-D tangible user interface (TUI) with a telexisting communication framework for group-based collaboration and demonstration. In this work, we present a larger-scaled proof-of-concept prototype providing hands-on operation for shape-based interactions including multi-sided collaboration and one-to-many presentation. In contrast to previous works, we further extend the use of TUIs to support cooperative tasks with telexistence while enabling the linkage of manipulable bits to provide a better user experience and interactivity.

Mobile solutions can help transform speech and sound into visual representations for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH). However, where handheld phones present challenges, head-worn displays (HWDs) could further communication through privately transcribed text, handsfree use, improved mobility, and socially acceptable interactions. Wearable Subtitles is a lightweight 3D-printed proof-of-concept HWD that explores augmenting communication through sound transcription for a full workday. Using a low-power microcontroller architecture, we enable up to 15 hours of continuous use. We describe a large survey (n=501) and three user studies with 24 deaf/hard-of-hearing participants which inform our development and help us refine our prototypes. Our studies and prior research identify critical challenges for the adoption of HWDs which we address through extended battery life, lightweight and balanced mechanical design (54 g), fitting options, and form factors that are compatible with current social norms.

user interface prototyping is an efficient approach for eliciting user requirements in the early phase of software development. It is an iterative analysis technique in which users are actively involved in the mocking-up of the UI for a system. It is typically done in a drag-And-drop fashion by professionals, which is time-consuming and requires specialized knowledge. This paper presents a prototype tool SAIP (Semi-Automatic user interface Prototyping), which allows users to express their natural language requirements and semi-Automatically generates a corresponding graphical user interface. Based on a systematic literature review of the user interface prototype, we design a framework that maps natural language to the user interface prototype. Furthermore, develop a demo version of the SAIP-a user interface prototyping tool served from natural language processing and neural network for the user interface automatic generation. Our tool aims to help users who have little knowledge in user interface design to express their ideas and requirements freely. © 2021 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

With the widespread use of cloud-native architecture, increasing web applications (apps) choose to build on microservices. Simultaneously, troubleshooting becomes full of challenges owing to the high dynamics and complexity of anomaly propagation. Existing diagnostic methods rely heavily on monitoring metrics collected from the kernel side of microservice systems. Without a comprehensive monitoring infrastructure, application owners and even cloud operators cannot resort to these kernel-space solutions. This paper summarizes several insights on operating a top commercial cloud platform. Then, for the first time, we put forward the idea of user-space diagnosis for microservice kernel failures. To this end, we develop a crowdsourcing solution - DyCause, to resolve the asymmetric diagnostic information problem. DyCause deploys on the application side in a distributed manner. Through lightweight API log sharing, apps collect the operational status of kernel services collaboratively and initiate diagnosis on demand. Deploying DyCause is fast and lightweight as we do not have any architectural and functional requirements for the kernel. To reveal more accurate correlations from asymmetric diagnostic information, we design a novel statistical algorithm that can efficiently discover the time-varying causalities between services. This algorithm also helps us build the temporal order of the anomaly propagation. Therefore, by using DyCause, we can obtain more in-depth and interpretable diagnostic clues with limited indicators. We apply and evaluate DyCause on both a simulated test-bed and a real-world cloud system. Experimental results verify that DyCause running in the user-space outperforms several state-of-the-art algorithms running in the kernel on accuracy. Besides, DyCause shows superior advantages in terms of algorithmic efficiency and data sensitivity. M-DFCPP: A runtime library for multi-machine dataflow computing

This article designs and implements a runtime library for general dataflow programming, DFCPP (Luo Q, Huang J, Li J, Du Z. proceedings of the 52nd International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops. acm;2023:145-152.), and builds upon it to design and implement a multi-machine C++ dataflow library, M-DFCPP. In comparison to existing dataflow programming environments, DFCPP features a user-friendly interface and richer expressive capabilities (Luo Q, Huang J, Li J, Du Z. proceedings of the 52nd International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops. acm;2023:145-152.), enabling the representation of various types of dataflow actor tasks (static, dynamic and conditional task). Besides that, DFCPP addresses the memory management and task scheduling for non-uniform memory access architectures, while other dataflow libraries lack attention to these issues. M-DFCPP extends the capability of current dataflow runtime libraries (DFCPP, taskflow, openstream, etc.) and capable of multi-machine computing, while maintains the API compatible with DFCPP. M-DFCPP adopts the concepts of master and follower (Dean J, Ghemawat S. Commun acm. 2008;51(1):107-113;Ghemawat S, Gobioff H, Leung ST. acm SIGOPS Operating Systems Review. acm;2003:29-43.), which form a worksharing framework as many multi-machine system. To shift to the M-DFCPP framework, a filtering layer is inserted to the original DFCPP, transforming it into followers that can cooperate with each other. The master is made of modules for scheduling, data processing, graph partition, state management and so forth. In benchmark tests with workload with directed acyclic graph topology of binary trees and random graphs, DFCPP demonstrated performance improvements of 20% and 8%, respectively, compared to the second fastest library. M-DFCPP consistently exhibits outstanding performance across varying levels of concurrency and task workloads, achieving a maximum speedup of more than 20 over DFCPP, when the task parallelism e

Developing interactive systems and testing with realistic scenarios requires a detailed understanding of how these systems are used in their real environment. In this paper, we report on our experience from implementing a usage monitoring approach for the touch-enabled human machine interface of an industrial machine. The approach supports automated recording of user interface events as basis for analyzing interactions of users with the system. It collects information about navigation paths to different screens, activities on these screens, and the usage of functionality provided by the application. We evaluated three different approaches to integrate the required usage monitoring into the UI, considering aspects such as necessary changes to the existing code base, dependencies to third-party libraries, and the entailed performance overhead. The paper provides a detailed description of the implementation of the selected approach and a discussion of the lessons we learned from integrating the monitoring in an existing application.

Knowledge work increasingly spans multiple computing surfaces. Yet in status quo user experiences, content as well as tools, behaviors, and workflows are largely bound to the current device-running the current application, for the current user, and at the current moment in time. SurfaceFleet is a system and toolkit that uses resilient distributed programming techniques to explore cross-device interactions that are unbounded in these four dimensions of device, application, user, and time. As a reference implementation, we describe an interface built using Surface Fleet that employs lightweight, semi-transparent UI elements known as Applets. Applets appear always-on-top of the operating system, application windows, and (conceptually) above the device itself. But all connections and synchronized data are virtualized and made resilient through the cloud. For example, a sharing Applet known as a Portfolio allows a user to drag and drop unbound Interaction Promises into a document. Such promises can then be fulfilled with content asynchronously, at a later time (or multiple times), from another device, and by the same or a different user.

Neurophysiological laboratory studies are often constraint to immediate geographical surroundings and access to equipment may be temporally restricted. Limitations of ecological validity, scalability, and generalizability of findings pose a significant challenge for the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which ultimately need to function in any context, on consumer-grade hardware. We introduce MYND: An open-source framework that couples consumer-grade recording hardware with an easy-to-use application for the unsupervised evaluation of BCI control strategies. Subjects are guided through experiment selection, hardware fitting, recording, and data upload in order to self-administer multi-day studies that include neurophysiological recordings and questionnaires at home. As a use case, thirty subjects evaluated two BCI control strategies ("Positive memories" and "Music imagery") by using a four-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) with MYND. Neural activity in both control strategies could be decoded with an average offline accuracy of 68.5% and 64.0% across all days.
