Haptic simulation of hand tools like wrenches, pliers, scissors and syringes are beneficial for finely detailed skill training in VR, but designing for numerous hand tools usually requires an expert-level knowledge of specific mechanism and protocol. This paper presents HapLinkage, a prototyping framework based on linkage mechanism, that provides typical motion templates and haptic renderers to facilitate proxy design of virtual hand tools. The mechanical structures can be easily modified, for example, to scale the size, or to change the range of motion by selectively changing linkage lengths. Resistant, stop, release, and restoration force feedback are generated by an actuating module as part of the structure. Additional vibration feedback can be generated with a linear actuator. HapLinkage enables easy and quick prototypting of hand tools for diverse VR scenarios, that embody both of their kinetic and haptic properties. Based on interviews with expert designers, it was confirmed that HapLinkage is expressive in designing haptic proxy of hand tools to enhance VR experiences. It also identified potentials and future development of the framework.

Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) are the dominant form of enabling Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) for personal use. One of the biggest challenges of HMDs is the exclusion of people in the vicinity, such as friends or family. While recent research on asymmetric interaction for VR HMDs has contributed to solving this problem in the VR domain, AR HMDs come with similar but also different problems, such as conficting information in visualization through the HMD and projection. In this work, we propose ShARe, a modifed AR HMD combined with a projector that can display augmented content onto planar surfaces to include the outside users (non-HMD users). To combat the challenge of conficting visualization between augmented and projected content, ShARe visually aligns the content presented through the AR HMD with the projected content using an internal calibration procedure and a servo motor. Using marker tracking, non-HMD users are able to interact with the projected content using touch and gestures. To further explore the arising design space, we implemented three types of applications (collaborative game, competitive game, and external visualization). ShARe is a proof-of-concept system that showcases how AR HMDs can facilitate interaction with outside users to combat exclusion and instead foster rich, enjoyable social interactions.

Wearable health devices have the potential to incentivize individuals in health-promoting behaviors and to assist in the monitoring of health conditions. Wearable epilepsy seizure monitoring devices are now evolving that can support individuals and their caregivers via the automated sensing, reporting and logging of epileptic seizures. This work contributes a novel reflection on the interface requirements of wearer users and non-wearer stakeholder users. We evaluate the "guessability" of the light pattern interface of the Empatica Embrace wrist-worn epileptic seizure monitor and provide box plot results for eight interface indications. We also report summarised feedback from a heuristic analysis with fourteen participant evaluators. The results indicate some satisfaction with the minimal aesthetic of a simple light pattern interface as well as some concerns about confusion between different indications, accessibility and reliance on recall.

Virtual personal assistant (VPA) services, e.g. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, are becoming increasingly popular recently. users interact with them through voice-based apps, e.g. Amazon Alexa skills and Google Assistant actions. Unlike the desktop and mobile apps which have visible and intuitive graphical userinterface (GUI) to facilitate interaction, VPA apps convey information purely verbally through the voice userinterface (VUI), which is known to be limited in its invisibility, single mode and high demand of user attention. This may lead to various problems on the usability and correctness of VPA apps. In this work, we propose a model-based framework named Vitas to handle VUI testing of VPA apps. Vitas interacts with the app VUI, and during the testing process, it retrieves semantic information from voice feedbacks by natural language processing. It incrementally constructs the finite state machine (FSM) model of the app with a weighted exploration strategy guided by key factors such as the coverage of app functionality. We conduct a large-scale testing on 41,581 VPA apps (i.e., skills) of Amazon Alexa, the most popular VPA service, and find that 51.29% of them have weaknesses. They largely suffer from problems such as unexpected exit/start, privacy violation and so on. Our work reveals the immaturity of the VUI designs and implementations in VPA apps, and sheds light on the improvement of several crucial aspects of VPA apps.

Customizing software should be as easy as using it. Unfortunately, most customization methods require users to abruptly shift from using a graphical interface to writing scripts in a programming language. We introduce data-driven customization, a new way for end users to extend software by direct manipulation without doing traditional programming. We augment existing userinterfaces with a table view showing the structured data inside the application. When users edit the table, their changes are reflected in the original UI. This simple model accommodates a spreadsheet formula language and custom data-editing widgets, providing enough power to implement a variety of useful extensions. We illustrate the approach with Wildcard, a browser extension that implements data-driven customization on the web using web scraping. Through concrete examples, we show that this paradigm can support useful extensions to many real websites, and we share reflections from our experiences using the tool. Finally, we share our broader vision for data-driven customization: a future where end users have more access to the data inside their applications, and can more flexibly re-purpose that data as part of everyday software usage.
