Mobile applications are very challenging to test as they usually have a complex graphical userinterface and advanced functionality that involves interacting with remote services. Due to these features, student assessment in courses about mobile application development usually relies on assignments or projects that are manually checked by teaching assistants for grading. This approach clearly does not scale to large classrooms, especially for online courses. This article presents a novel system for automated assessment of Android exercises with cloud-native technologies. Different from the state of the art, the proposed solution leverages a mobile app testing framework that is largely used in the industry instead of custom libraries. Furthermore, the devised system employs software containers and scales with the availability of resources in a data center, which is essential for massive open online courses. The system design and implementation is detailed, together with the results from a deployment within a master-level course with 120 students. The received feedback demonstrates that the proposed solution was effective, as it provided insightful feedback and supported independent learning of mobile application development.

Despite the increasing popularity of soft interactive devices, their fabrication remains complex and time consuming. We contribute a process for rapid do-it-yourself fabrication of soft circuits using a conventional desktop inkjet printer. It supports inkjet printing of circuits that are stretchable, ultrathin, high resolution, and integrated with a wide variety of materials used for prototyping. We introduce multi-ink functional printing on a desktop printer for realizing multimaterial devices, including conductive and isolating inks. We further present DIY techniques to enhance compatibility between inks and substrates and the circuits' elasticity. This enables circuits on a wide set of materials including temporary tattoo paper, textiles, and thermoplastic. Four application cases demonstrate versatile uses for realizing stretchable devices, e-textiles, body-based and re-shapeable interfaces.

Natural language programming is a promising approach to enable end users to instruct new tasks for intelligent agents. However, our formative study found that end users would often use unclear, ambiguous or vague concepts when naturally instructing tasks in natural language, especially when specifying conditionals. Existing systems have limited support for letting the user teach agents new concepts or explaining unclear concepts. In this paper, we describe a new multi-modal domain-independent approach that combines natural language programming and programming-by-demonstration to allow users to first naturally describe tasks and associated conditions at a high level, and then collaborate with the agent to recursively resolve any ambiguities or vagueness through conversations and demonstrations. users can also define new procedures and concepts by demonstrating and referring to contents within GUIs of existing mobile apps. We demonstrate this approach in PUMICE, an end-user programmable agent that implements this approach. A lab study with 10 users showed its usability.

Current VR/AR systems are unable to reproduce the physical sensation of fluid vessels, due to the shifting nature of fluid motion. To this end, we introduce SWISH, an ungrounded mixed-reality interface, capable of affording the users a realistic haptic sensation of fluid behaviors in vessels. The chief mechanism behind SWISH is in the use of virtual reality tracking and motor actuation to actively relocate the center of gravity of a handheld vessel, emulating the moving center of gravity of a handheld vessel that contains fluid. In addition to solving challenges related to reliable and efficient motor actuation, our SWISH designs place an emphasis on reproducibility, scalability, and availability to the maker culture. Our virtual-to-physical coupling uses Nvidia Flex's Unity integration for virtual fluid dynamics with a 3D printed augmented vessel containing a motorized mechanical actuation system. To evaluate the effectiveness and perceptual efficacy of SWISH, we conduct a user study with 24 participants, 7 vessel actions, and 2 virtual fluid viscosities in a virtual reality environment. In all cases, the users on average reported that the SWISH bucket generates accurate tactile sensations for the fluid behavior. This opens the potential for multi-modal interactions with programmable fluids in virtual environments for chemistry education, worker training, and immersive entertainment.

Recent advances in computer vision and natural language processing using deep neural networks (DNNs) have enabled rich and intuitive multimodal interfaces. However, research on intelligent assistance systems for persons with visual impairment has not been well explored. In this work, we present an interactive object recognition and guidance interface based on multimodal interaction for blind and partially sighted people using an embedded mobile device. We demonstrate that the proposed solution using DNNs can effectively assist visually impaired people. We believe that this work will provide new and helpful insights for designing intelligent assistance systems in the future.

In an effort to find a way to more efficiently and accurately display localized high definition tactile information to the skin we studied the vibrotactile constructive wave interference properties of silicone gel. By placing two actuators at a given distance from each other and controlling the delay when each actuator is activated in relation to the other, we can achieve a point of constructive wave interference. The time when the interference occurs along with any loses due to attenuation depends on the material the vibration travels through. The goal is to find a compliant material that can be used as a reference to human tissue when designing feedback for assistive robots.

In Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), learners face a lot of distractions which will cause divided attention (DA). However, it is not easy for learners to realize that they are distracted and to find out which part of the course they have missed. In this paper, we present Reminder, a system for detecting divided attention and reminding learners what they just missed on both PC and mobile devices with a camera capturing their status. To get learners' attention level, we build a regression model to predict attention score from an integrated feature vector. Meanwhile, we design an interactively updating method to make the model adaptive to a specific user. We also propose a visualization method to help learners review missed content easily. user study shows that Reminder detects learners' divided attention and assists them to review missed course contents effectively.
