Redirected walking (RDW) techniques provide a way to explore a virtual space that is larger than the available physical space by imperceptibly manipulating the virtual world view or motions. These manipulations may introduce conficts between real and virtual cues (e.g., visual-vestibular conficts), which can be disturbing when detectable by users. The empirically established detection thresholds of rotation manipulation for RDW still require a large physical tracking space and are therefore impractical for general-purpose Virtual Reality (VR) applications. We investigate Redirected Jumping (RDJ) as a new locomotion metaphor for redirection to partially address this limitation, and because jumping is a common interaction for environments like games. We investigated the detection rates for different curvature gains during RDJ. The probability of users detecting RDJ appears substantially lower than that of RDW, meaning designers can get away with greater manipulations with RDJ than with RDW. We postulate that the substantial vertical (up/down) movement present when jumping introduces increased vestibular noise compared to normal walking, thereby supporting greater rotational manipulations. Our study suggests that the potential combination of metaphors (e.g., walking and jumping) could further reduce the required physical space for locomotion in VR. We also summarize some differences in user jumping approaches and provide motion sickness measures in our study.

We present ComPat, an open source visual editor enabling end users to compose graphical user interfaces based on the composite pattern, a common software engineering design pattern: any widget or group of widgets is treated the same way as a single instance of the same type of widget. ComPat exploits a grid of rows and columns, where each cell, regulated by layout constraints, is populated either by direct import of widgets from a palette or by pattern application. In order to compose graphical user interfaces, any portion could be cut, copied, pasted, and treated as a single object thanks to the composite pattern, thus facilitating reusability. Any portion becomes a pattern that can be applied either by direct instantiation or by rewriting. ComPat automatically generates a Java Swing graphical user interface corresponding to the composition and stores its definition in a user interface Description Language based on a XML Schema.

With network slicing technology, 5G changes the classical mobile network business model from a network-operator-oriented business to a more open system with multiple stakeholders. In this context, a network slice broker plays the role of agency between network resource providers and vertical service providers, to lease and provide on-demand network slice services. In practice, a single network slice broker normally owns limited types of network slices. And a collaboration infrastructure could be built up to enable network slice sharing among multiple network slice brokers, so as to improve user experience, and enhance the resource utilization rate. However, a major challenge with such an infrastructure is how to support fair and secure slice trading process among multiple un-trusted network slice providers. Blockchain technology, on the other side, brings in high opportunities to implement a fair and secure trading system without a trusted third-party. In view of this observation, this paper proposes a design of blockchain-enabled collaboration infrastructure for network slice brokers, where a group of registered brokers can trade their network slices in a fair and secure manner. To enhance the accountability of slice trading records, transactions are verified and sorted by each broker node, which are further packed into blocks and appended to a shared ledger maintained by each member in the collaboration network. More specifically, we design a Proof-of-Majority (PoM) consensus protocol to sort slice trading transactions before packing transaction blocks of the shared ledger. Furthermore, an optimization for the basic PoM protocol is discussed, with dependency resolving strategy to improve system performance. Experiments are conducted to verify the feasibility of our proposal. © 2020 acm.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD poses a severe concern for today's youth, especially when the costs, efficacy, side effects of medication and the lack of immediate risk discourage treatment. ADHD causes people to make impulsive decisions, making it harder to succeed in school, work, and other aspects of life. Neurofeedback Therapy has shown promising results as an alternative in treating mental disorders and improving cognition. It leverages the inherent mechanism of operant conditioning by presenting real-time feedback of the user's brainwave activity, which is usually acquired via an EEG. However, long sessions of monotonous feedback have proven tedious, and users lose motivation to continue. Engaging graphical interfaces and games have been developed to combat this issue and have been proven to improve the treatment's efficacy. In this work, we extend upon these methods to increase engagement by employing Augmented Reality in the context of a virtual telekinetic game. The system comprises three modules: an Emotiv headset for EEG acquisition, MATLAB for signal processing, and an AR mobile application to deliver the feedback. The hardware and software implementation, the signal processing methodology, and the Neurofeedback protocol are thoroughly outlined. Our next step is to conduct a pilot study with a subset of healthy children to evaluate the complexity of the process.

When generating tests for graphical user interfaces, one central problem is to identify how individual UI elements can be interacted with-clicking, long- or right-clicking, swiping, dragging, typing, or more. We present an approach based on reinforcement learning that automatically learns which interactions can be used for which elements, and uses this information to guide test generation. We model the problem as an instance of the multi-armed bandit problem (MAB problem) from probability theory, and show how its traditional solutions work on test generation, with and without relying on previous knowledge.

user interface prototypes (UIP) are widely used to get feedback before building a software feature. They can prevent misunderstandings between the software development team and other stakeholders (e.g., users, investors) that lead to rework or a resulting software that does not meet their needs. UIP can also be a valuable resource in Agile software development, in which feedback is key. In this paper, we present an approach to generate UIP automatically from Agile requirements specifications written in Concordia and its corresponding prototype tool. The tool is able to generate UIP for web-based applications. We evaluated the approach and the tool with questionnaires, and the results revealed that: (i) the generated UIP are very similar to those drawn by respondents;(ii) the generated source code has good enough quality to be reused by developers;and (iii) they save design and development time.

While hair is an essential component of virtual humans, it is also one of the most challenging digital assets to create. Existing automatic techniques lack the generality and flexibility to create rich hair variations, while manual authoring interfaces often require considerable artistic skills and efforts, especially for intricate 3D hair structures that can be difficult to navigate. We propose an interactive hair modeling system that can help create complex hairstyles in minutes or hours that would otherwise take much longer with existing tools. Modelers, including novice users, can focus on the overall hairstyles and local hair deformations, as our system intelligently suggests the desired hair parts. Our method combines the flexibility of manual authoring and the convenience of data-driven automation. Since hair contains intricate 3D structures such as buns, knots, and strands, they are inherently challenging to create using traditional 2D interfaces. Our system provides a new 3D hair authoring interface for immersive interaction in virtual reality (VR). users can draw high-level guide strips, from which our system predicts the most plausible hairstyles via a deep neural network trained from a professionally curated dataset. Each hairstyle in our dataset is composed of multiple variations, serving as blend-shapes to fit the user drawings via global blending and local deformation. The fitted hair models are visualized as interactive suggestions that the user can select, modify, or ignore. We conducted a user study to confirm that our system can significantly reduce manual labor while improve the output quality for modeling a variety of head and facial hairstyles that are challenging to create via existing techniques.

With the rapid growth of users' data in SaaS (software-as-a-service) platforms using micro-services, it becomes essential to detect duplicated entities for ensuring the integrity and consistency of data in many companies and businesses (primarily multinational corporations). Due to the large volume of databases today, the expected duplicate detection algorithms need to be not only accurate but also practical, which means that it can release the detection results as fast as possible for a given request. Among existing algorithms for the deduplicate detection problem, using Siamese neural networks with the triplet loss has become one of the robust ways to measure the similarity of two entities (texts, paragraphs, or documents) for identifying all possible duplicated items. In this paper, we first propose a practical framework for building a duplicate detection system in a SaaS platform. Second, we present a new active learning schema for training and updating duplicate detection algorithms. In this schema, we not only allow the crowd to provide more annotated data for enhancing the chosen learning model but also use the Siamese neural networks as well as the triplet loss to construct an efficient model for the problem. Finally, we design a user interface of our proposed deduplicate detection system, which can easily apply for empirical applications in different companies. © 2020 acm.
