When an object is interposed between a touch surface and a finger/touch pen, the change in impedance caused by the object can be measured by the driver software. This phenomenon has been used to develop new interaction techniques. Unlike previous works that focused on the capacitance component in impedance, Ohmic-Touch enhances touch input modality by sensing resistance. Using 3D printers or inkjet printers with conductive materials and off-the-shelf electronic components/sensors, resistance is easily and precisely controllable. We implement mechanisms on touch surfaces based on the electrical resistance of the object: for example, to sense the touching position on an interposed object, to identify each object, and to sense light, force, or temperature by using resistors and sensors. Additionally, we conduct experimental studies that demonstrate that our technology has a recognition accuracy of resistance value of 97%.

A contract-driven development approach requires the formalization of component requirements in the form of a component contract. The Use Case, Responsibility Driven Analysis and Design (URDAD) methodology is based on the contract-driven development approach and uses contracts to capture user requirements and perform a technology-neutral design across layers of granularity. This is achieved by taking use -case based functional requirements through an iterative design process and generating various levels of granularity iteratively. In this project, the component contracts that were captured by utilizing the URDAD approach are used to generate test interceptors which validate whether, in the context of rendering component services, the component contracts are satisfied. To achieve this, Java classes and interfaces are annotated with pre- and postconditions to represent the contracts in code. Annotation processors are then used to automatically generate test-interceptor classes by processing the annotations. The test-interceptor classes encapsulate test-logic and are interface -compatible with their underlying component counterparts. This enable test-interceptors to intercept service requests to the underlying counterpart components in order to verify contract adherence. The generated test interceptors can be used for unit testing as well as real-time component monitoring. This development approach, utilized within the URDAD methodology would then result in unit and integration tests across levels of granularity. Empirical data from actual software development projects will be used to assess the impact of introducing such a development approach in real software development projects. In particular, the study assesses the impact on the quality attributes of the software development process, as well as the qualities of the software produced by the process. Here we report the new soft sensor "FoamSense" that can measure the defounation state of a volumetric soft object such as compressed, bent, twisted and sheared (Figure 1). This sensor is made by impregnating a porous soft object with conductive ink. The design process of FoamSense is explained. We then summarized the features and basic characteristics of some porous materials for designing these sensors appropriately. We also proposed the potential of using digital fabrication for controlling the carrier structure of FoamSense. Proposed porous structure showed an anisotropic sensor characteristic. We discussed the potential and limitation of this approach. Three possible applications are proposed by using FoamSense. FoamSense supports a richer interaction between the user and soft objects.

Due to the increasing heterogeneity in network user requirements, dynamically varying day to day network traffic patterns and delay in network service deployment, there is a huge demand for scalability and flexibility in modern networking infrastructure, which in return has paved way for the introduction of software Defined Networking (SDN) in core networks. In this paper, we present an FPGA-based switch which is fully compliant with OpenFlow; the pioneering protocol for southbound interface of SDN. The switch architecture is completely implemented on hardware. The design consists of an OpenFlow Southbound agent which can process OpenFlow packets at a rate of 10Gbps. The architecture contains a primary pipeline which is capable of achieving core network throughputs and an auxiliary pipeline leading to the Openflow agent. Single clock cycle Content Accessible Memory (CAM) architecture supports the overall design to achieve its throughput and latency requirements. The proposed architecture speed scales up to 400Gbps while it consumes only 60% resources on a Xilinx Virtex-7 featuring XC7VX485T FPGA. Switch fabric is capable of connecting to a control plane running upon a host PC via PCIe which provides an opportunity at research level to explore SDN in core networks. Moreover, the architecture is experimented for different scaled versions using line rates of 10G, 25G and 100G. By using FPGA based embedded platforms which support sufficient number of ports and their line rates, this architecture can be deployed in core networks.

We proposed a hand-free Natural user interface (NUI) for VR Head-Mounted-Display (HMD) with infra-red (IR) based sensor tracking facial gestures. We have realized NUI based on the real-time recognition of user intuitions for VR HMD without any additional control devices except for a built-in Gyroscope and IR couplers with readout circuitry integrated in the foam interface of an HMD. We implemented seven control commands affordable for 3D interactions with virtual objects. The experimental data show that the proposed system provides a convenient and efficient 2D/3D user interface for both manipulating objects and controlling commands while wearing a VR HMD.

We present a jaw, face, or head movement (face-related movement) recognition system called Canal:Sense. 11 recognizes face-related movements using barometers embedded in earphones. We find that face-related movements change air pressure inside the ear canals, which shows characteristic changes depending on the type and degree of the movement. We also find that such characteristic changes can be used to recognize face-related movements. We conduct an experiment to measure the accuracy of recognition. As a result, random forest shows per-user recognition accuracies of 87,6% for eleven face-related movements and 87.5% for four Open Month levels.

The dramatic decrease in price and increase in availability of hobbyist electronics has led to a wide array of embedded and interactive devices. While electronics have become more widespread, developing and prototyping the required circuitry for these devices is still difficult, requiring knowledge of electronics, components, and programming In this paper, we present Trigger-Action-Circuits (TAC), an interactive system that leverages generative design to produce circuitry, firmware, and assembly instructions, based on high-level, behavioural descriptions. TAC is able to generate multiple candidate circuits from a behavioural description, giving the user a number of alternative circuits that may be best suited to their use case (e.g., based on cost, component availability or ease of assembly). The generated circuitry uses off-the-shelf, commodity electronics, not specialized hardware components, enabling scalability and extensibility. A user study demonstrated that TAC helps users avoid problems encountered during circuit design and assembly, with users completing their circuits significantly faster than with traditional methods.

user-centered design (UCD)1 addresses the design of interactive systems placing the users in the center of the design with the aim of improving usability and user experience. Developing economies are in dear need of UCD;low IT literacy, low infrastructure and funds;and heterogeneity in culture and livelihood result in special requirements on usability in order to harvest the possible benefits of IT. Traditional UCD methods, however, are often regarded as heavy-weight and expensive. Agile software development methods are light-weight, flexible and iterative in order to accommodate the changing requirements and unsure funding and are therefore important for IT companies in developing economies. Can we adjust UCD methods to fit the need of developing economies and with agile development while taking advantage of the iterative character of agile development methods? The research appropriated an action research approach called Cooperative Method Development (CMD). Based on the empirical investigation, UCD challenges were identified, innovative use of light-weight UCD methods was deliberated and implemented. The improvements include: working with local IT personnel, light-weight and incremental use of personas, support departments performing acceptance testing on release versions, culturally adapted user testing in pairs and heuristic evaluation as adapted UCD practices. The evaluation together with the involved practitioners shows improvements in the development process including reduced reworks;satisfied users;better collaboration with stakeholders;and a close understanding of users and their needs. The evaluation of the resulting integrated approach with the involved practitioners as well as software engineers not involved in the research indicates that the results are transferable to similar contexts.

We propose an immersive telepresence system for puppetry that transmits a human performer's body and facial movements into a puppet with audiovisual feedback to the performer. The cameras carried in place of puppet's eyes stream live video to the HMD worn by the performer, so that performers can see the images from the puppet's eyes with their own eyes and have a visual understanding of the puppet's ambience. In conventional methods to manipulate a puppet (a hand-puppet, a string-puppet, and a rod-puppet), there is a need to practice manipulating puppets, and there is difficulty carrying out interactions with the audience. Moreover, puppeteers must be positioned exactly where the puppet is. The proposed system addresses these issues by enabling a human performer to manipulate the puppet remotely using his or her body and facial movements. We conducted several user studies with both beginners and professional puppeteers. The results show that, unlike the conventional method, the proposed system facilitates the manipulation of puppets especially for beginners. Moreover, this system allows performers to enjoy puppetry and fascinate audiences.

This paper proposes a hybrid method combining well-known holistic test and mutation testing in software testing for Graphical user interface (GUI) testing of an android application. Moreover, this hybrid method satisfies requirements of ideal testing that is well known and important in software testing. Presence and absence of GUI based faults are tested within this work experimentally and comparatively in the scale of given or constructed model. First step of the method is modeling the given GUI of android application by Finite State Machine (FSM) and then converting this FSM to Regular Expression (RE). Then, test sequences are generated from a context table that is obtained analysis of the RE model. This process defines first part of the Holistic Testing namely positive testing. In second part called negative testing, the test sequence generation procedure is applied mutants of the FSM obtained after applying selected mutation operators. The generated test sequences from original and mutant models are executed on mutant and original android applications respectively. Test sequences are filtered by using pre-defined selection criteria for both positive and negative testing to achieve ideal test suites that are satisfying requirements of the ideal testing.
