Current mobile operating systems such as Android employ the permission-based access control mechanism, but it is difficult for users to understand how and why the permissions are used within a particular application. This paper introduces permission-UI mapping as an easy-to-understand representation to illustrate how permissions are used by different UI components within a given application. Connecting UI components to permissions helps users to understand the purpose of permission requests and also makes it possible to illustrate permission requests in a fine-grained manner. We propose PERUIM to extract the permission-UI mapping from an application based on both dynamic and static analysis, and represent the analysis results with a graphical representation. Experiments on popular mobile applications demonstrate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed approach.

Engineering and Creative Design have overlapping traditions, although the latter is four orders of magnitude older than the former. The former has been more normative about design processes than the latter. Norms have differed, with creative design often celebrating the hand-made, and engineering typically exploiting mechanisation. In contrast, norms did converge with scientifically motivated approaches to creative design (e.g., Bauhaus, Ulm, Design Methods movement). The underlying values of Engineering and Creative Design have thus both converged and diverged. Empirical facts however are overwhelmingly convergent, but with only partial evidence of the rational idealised linear ideals of Engineering Design being met. Regardless of the craft space, reflective creative design, where design materials talk back to co-evolve both problem and solution framing, dominates when complete processes are studied. Agile development methodologies are a first step in moving away from the impossibility of Rational Idealised Linear Engineering Design (RILED) towards the realities of creative reflective practice. In this talk, I will present a tactical reframing of engineering ideals within the realities of creative reflective design. Engineering ideals do have potentially worthwhile roles place in creative axiological practices, but these are to support, not to direct. In this talk I will use Abstract Design Situations to contrast the major design paradigms and empirical studies to expose their limitations as a basis for outlining some worth-focused approaches to Interaction Design that can exploit engineering rigour within the realities of creative reflective work contexts.

A versatile framework for automation of sophisticated farm machinery has been proposed in this paper. The paper details the functional design and development of the hardware and software architecture of the framework for electronic monitoring and control of a complex system. The framework aims to provide a user friendly bridge between the digital world and the physical world and covers the core software functionalities for monitoring and control. The user interface is hosted on a local web server running off a single board computer. This interface is accessed by a web browser on a mobile device (such as a smart phone or a tablet) through a Wi-Fi connection. The computer monitors and controls the mounted sensors and actuators through an I/O extension cape. It stores all monitored data and control updates in a database. The user interface is updated regularly to ensure that what the operator sees is the latest information. The paper summarizes the outcome of implementing the framework using a few sensors and actuators in a lab environment. © 2016 IEEE.

Spectrum sensing plays a critical role in improving spectrum utilization for cognitive radio networks. The majority of existing sensing approaches aim to detect the existence of a signal on a busy channel without differentiating whether a signal originates from a primary user or not. In this paper, we attempt to solve this challenge by an experimental approach using GNU radio and Universal software Radio Peripheral (USRP) board. A two-stage sensing strategy is proposed to detect channel states. The first stage detects whether a channel is busy or idle by observing both the energy level and bandwidth. Once the channel is busy, we further determine the channel is occupied by a Primary user (PU) and an Secondary user (SU). From experiments, we observe that a receiver cannot successfully receive a signal if it implements different demodulation schemes with a transmitter. For example, a Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) demodulator cannot detect a Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) signal transmitted by a transmitter. Motivated by this observation, we propose that at the second stage, PUs and SUs are negotiated to conduct different modulations. Then SUs are equipped with two demodulators that will be able to demodulate both the PUs signal and the SUs signal. Given that SU and PU perform distinct modulations, once the PU comes to its licensed channel, the SU communicating on that channel will recognize it and withdraw from the channel immediately. Extensive experiments using GNU radio and USRP boards are carried out under various scenarios to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2016 acm.

Routine early age child immunization is one of the most costeffective public health interventions. The use of Information and Communication technology (ICT) tools such as Immunization Information Systems (IIS) to improve efficiency of vaccination programs has shown mixed but encouraging results in terms of success. The objective of this paper is to present evidence of Evaccs - a successfully deployed smartphone based vaccinator monitoring app, discuss the need to create a smartphone enabled IIS (called Har Zindagi - every life matters) that can store digital records of every child, discuss various design and implementation features of Har Zindagi's android application, and present findings of the usability testing performed on the Har Zindagi android app. Given that the vaccinators are non tech-savvy, and the real estate on a smartphone is limited, this application was particularly designed to allow easy record entry process, and smoothen the workflow. This paper builds upon previous work on user interface design for lowliterate users, and identifies techniques to iteratively design interfaces with government employees, who may be uncomfortable with giving usability feedback due to fear of repercussions or might have different field reality when compared to their supervisors and policy makers. © 2016 acm.

The color of the diamond is dependent on the difference in the refractive indexes by wavelength, so we developed a dispersion rendering system using wavelength division [Maki et al. 2014]. Although various rainbow-like colors can be reproduced in the stone by this technique, another technology is necessary to reproduce the brilliance of a diamond, which is caused by the ray entered from outside that reflects and refracts many times on the surface. We introduced the extend fractional view (EFV) integral photography (IP)[Yanaka 2008], which is considered to be a display method of four-dimensional light field [Levoy et al. 1996, Gortler et al. 1996]. We developed an IP system reproducing a three-dimensional image that changes color depending on the direction an observer looks at in about 30 degrees of the primary viewing zone. [Maki et al. 2015] However, the observer cannot choose the direction of looking at a diamond beyond the viewing zone. To remove this limitation, we developed a more sophisticated system in which the viewer can look at the diamond from any direction they like, by naturally rotating it with his/her hand.

Context: Integrate research evidence with practice is one of the main goals of evidence-based software engineering. However, recent studies show that the connection between systematic reviews and practitioners has not fully established. Goal: This paper presents the first steps towards a medium to transfer knowledge acquired from systematic reviews to practitioners. Method: We selected a set of systematic reviews identified by a tertiary study and extracted their findings to generate one-page Evidence Briefings to serve as mediums. A design specialist defined the briefings structure based on information design and gestalt principles. To evaluate the format and content of the briefings we conducted personal opinion surveys based on two groups: StackExchange users that posted questions in topics related to the reviews, and the authors of the selected reviews themselves. The former had a response rate of 21.9% (32 out 146) and the latter 31.8% (7 out of 22). Results: Practitioners rarely use systematic review research papers as mediums to acquire knowledge, since just 9% have told to do so. Both researchers and practitioners positively evaluated the evidence briefings, since 71% and 82% of the StackExchange users and systematic review authors, respectively, agreed or strongly agreed that the briefings' interface is clear. Conclusions: Researchers and practitioners were positive about the content and format of the evidence briefings we proposed. It is also possible to say that there is a gap between practitioners and systematic reviews due to the low percentage of practitioners that consume systematic reviews. The good reception of the evidence briefings from both sides show a possible route to reduce that gap.

In recent years, access control in online social networks has attracted academia a considerable amount of attention. Pre-viously, researchers mainly studied this topic from a formal perspective. On the other hand, how users actually use ac-cess control in their daily social network life is left largely unexplored. This paper presents the first large-scale em-pirical study on users' access control usage on Twitter and Instagram. Based on the data of 150k users on Twitter and 280k users on Instagram collected consecutively during three months in New York, we have conducted both static and dy-namic analysis on users' access control usage. Our findings include: female users, young users and Asian users are more concerned about their privacy;users who enable access con-Trol setting are less active and have smaller online social circles;global events and important festivals can inuence users to change their access control setting. Furthermore, we exploit machine learning classifiers to perform an access control setting prediction. Through experiments, the pre-dictor achieves a fair performance with the AUC equals to 0.70, indicating whether a user enables her access control setting or not can be predicted to a certain extent. © 2016 acm.

We can observe the rapid development of the spoken human machine interface, thanks to the big progress in automatic recognition and text to speech technologies. Especially, the mobile virtual assistants are becoming more popular than ever. Recognizing user's intent in interaction is one of the biggest problems while the system is designed and is attracting the attention of researchers. Identifying utterance's speech act in an automated manner is important to reveal user's intention (such as informing, asking, requesting and expressing emotion), which can provide useful indicators to improve the performance of human-machine interaction. Automatic speech act classification has been studied in many languages such as English, Chinese, Slovakian, Arabic, but not yet in Vietnamese. In this paper, we present a speech act scheme suitable for Vietnamese utterances in mobile voice inter-action. Also, we built a speech act classifier that achieved 84.36% accuracy. This classifier has been applied in our mobile virtual assistant for Vietnamese (VAV). The experiment result has demonstrated the ability of this classifier such as robust, compact and can work well on mobiles.

In recent times, migrating from touch-based input devices to touchless input devices has become one of the major research problems considering the health hazards exposed in public usages (e.g., information kiosk) of the touch-based devices. The problem still remains mostly open, since a solution having the properties of being low-cost, low power consuming, robust, and easy-to-use, is yet to be proposed in the literature. As a remedy to this situation, in this paper, we propose a visible light based touchless input device (named Sporshohin), retaining all the properties mentioned above, for ensuring ubiquitous usage. Sporshohin recognizes predefined gestures performed by the user, through an underlying mechanism that exploits well-known reflection model over the visible light spectrum. The underlying mechanism is intelligent enough to guarantee robustness against varying environmental lighting conditions and undefined noisy gestures. Real implementation, involving interaction with diversified users, confirms high accuracy and usability along with existence of all the above mentioned properties. We show the emulation of Sporshohin as an input interface for an information kiosk. The attributes of Sporshohin exhibit its prospect of being used in diversified applications going beyond information kiosks. © 2016 acm.
