At the university level, high enrollment numbers in classes can be overwhelming for professors and teaching assistants to manage. Grading assignments and tests for hundreds of students is time consuming and has led towards a push for software-based learning in large university classes. Unfortunately, traditional quantitative question-and-answer mechanisms are often not sufficient for STEM courses, where there is a focus on problem-solving techniques over finding the right answers. Working through problems by hand can be important in memory retention, so in order for software learning systems to be effective in STEM courses, they should be able to intelligently understand students sketches. Mechanix is a sketch-based system that allows students to step through problems designed by their instructors with personalized feedback and optimized interface controls. Optimizations like color-coding, menu bar simplification, and tool consolidation are recent improvements in Mechanix that further the aim to engage and motivate students in learning. © Copyright 2015 by the Association for Computing Machinery, Inc. The structure of preferences for modern highly-configurable software systems has become extremely complex, usually consisting of multiple layers of access that go from the user interface down to the lowest levels of the source code. This complexity can lead to inconsistencies between layers, especially during software evolution. For example, there may be preferences that users can change through the GUI, but that have no effect on the actual behavior of the system because the related source code is not present or has been removed going from one version to the next. These inconsistencies may result in unexpected program behaviors, which range in severity from mild annoyances to more critical security or performance problems. To address this problem, we present SCIC (software Configuration Inconsistency Checker), a static analysis technique that can automatically detect these kinds of inconsistencies. Unlike other configuration analysis tools, SCIC can handle software that (1) is written in multiple programming languages and (2) has a complex preference structure. In an empirical evaluation that we performed on 10 years worth of versions of both the widely used Mozilla Core and Firefox, SCIC was able to find 40 real inconsistencies (some determined as severe), whose lifetime spanned multiple versions, and whose detection required the analysis of code written in multiple languages.

Weakly consistent multiprocessors such as ARM and IBM POWER have been with us for decades, but their subtle programmer-visible concurrency behaviour remains challenging, both to implement and to use;the traditional architecture documentation, with its mix of prose and pseudocode, leaves much unclear. In this paper we show how a precise architectural envelope model for such architectures can be defined, taking IBM POWER as our example. Our model specifies, for an arbitrary test program, the set of all its allowable executions, not just those of some particular implementation. The model integrates an operational concurrency model with an ISA model for the fixed-point non-vector user-mode instruction set (largely automatically derived from the vendor pseudocode, and expressed in a new ISA description language). The key question is the interface between these two: allowing all the required concurrency behaviour, without over committing to some particular microarchitectural implementation, requires a novel abstract structure. Our model is expressed in a mathematically rigorous language that can be automatically translated to an executable test-oracle tool;this lets one either interactively explore or exhaustively compute the set of all allowed behaviours of intricate test cases, to provide a reference for hardware and software development.

We describe the Virtual Jump Simulator, which allows subjects to perform an indoor parachute jump in a virtual environment. The necessity to jump physically off a platform combined with immersive virtual reality and tactile feedback creates an experience with a high amount of presence, as the evaluation of the prototype confirms. The system consists of a steel cube, a mechanical absorber system with stacked eccentric wheels and counterweights that allows subjects in the weight range from 35 to 150kg to jump without the need for individual calibration, a virtual reality setup with high-quality 3D content and tactile stimuli. In the immersive virtual jump experience, we embed a story using rich multimedia content, such as images and sound. We iteratively tested the entire system with users of different backgrounds. Thereby, we gathered user feedback from the very beginning to create a novel virtual reality system that allows for actual physical jumping and flying with free body movement. © 2015 acm.

Modeling and building interactive user interfaces (UI) typically requires the skills of software developers and HCI experts who cooperate with platform and marketing experts in order to arrive at solutions with the required software quality, usability, and user experience. The combination of model-driven user interface development practices with pattern-based approaches that specify HCI- and softwarepatterns in a formalized way and respect emerging standards offers potentialities to facilitate and at least partially automate the user interface development process, therefore reduce the time-To-market and development costs, and lead to solutions that can easily be adapted to varying contexts and target devices. Such pattern-aided UI adaptation is not limited to design time decisions but can also be applied during runtime. This paper highlights the architecture and capabilities of the Pattern-Based Modeling and Generation of Interactive Systems (PaMGIS) framework to broadly support the construction and adaptation of user interface models. It is discussed, how pattern descriptions that capture important parts of the design knowledge should be organized in order to be automatically processed during the modeling process. Near-field radio frequency identification (RFID) tags have a number of unique features such as being wirelessly powered, having ultra low power communication capabilities, small size and low cost. These qualities paired with the increasing availability of commodity near field communication (NFC) enabled smart phones presents a significant opportunity to enable a wide range of new applications and usage scenarios. However, existing NFC tags are mainly used for identification. This demo presents the NFC-WISP, which is an programmable, sensing and computationally enhanced platform designed to explore new RFID enabled sensing and user interface applications. Two example applications using NFC-WISP are showed: one is a battery-free display tag;the other is a real-time temperature tracking and motion indicating tag for cold chain monitoring application. TanPro-Kit 2.0 is a programming tool for children aged 6 to 8, which is based on tangible user interface (TUI). It consists of programming blocks and a LED pad. The pad presents visual and audible feedback according to the arrangement of programming blocks with which children construct programs to play a maze game. Based on TanPro-Kit, we expanded three important programming concepts: parameters, Boolean logic and branch, and improved the system to support two-dimensional connection, which aims to make the program structure clearer. To realize these new features, we added three kinds of programming blocks accordingly, improved the process of block sequence in Arduino, and modified the infrared and wireless communications of the Single-Chip Microcomputer (SCM). A lab-based user study with 15 children was conducted, and the results show that the children can use the system to complete tasks easily and have a basic understanding of the related programming concepts.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology translates brain activity to machine-intelligible patterns, thus serving as input "device" to computers. BCI training games make the process of acquiring training data for the machine learning more engaging for the users. In this work, we discuss the design space for BCI training games based on existing literature, and a training game in form of a Jigsaw Puzzle. The game was trialled with four cerebral palsy patients. All patients were very acceptant of the involved technology, which, we argue, relates back to the concept of BCI training games plus the adaptations we made. On the other hand, the data quality was unsatisfactory. Hence, in future work both concept and implementation need to be finetuned to achieve a balance between user acceptance and data quality. © Copyright 2015 by the Association for Computing Machinery, Inc. As more educational resources become available online, it is possible to acquire more up-to-date knowledge and information. We propose BBookX, a novel computer facilitated system that automatically and collaboratively builds free open online books using publicly available educational resources such as Wikipedia. BBookX has two separate components: one creates an open version of existing books by linking different book chapters to Wikipedia articles, while another with an interactive user interface supports interactive realtime book creation where users are allowed to modify a generated book from explicit feedback. © 2015 acm.

Facebook's purchase of Oculus VR in 2014 ushered in a new era of consumer virtual reality head-mounted displays (HMDs). Converging technological advancements in small, high-resolution displays and motion-detection devices propelled VR beyond the purview of high-tech research laboratories and into the mainstream. However, technological hurdles still remain. As more consumer grade products develop, user comfort and experience will be of the utmost importance. One of the biggest issues for HMDs that lack external tracking is drift in the user position and rotation sensors. Drift can cause motion sickness and make stationary items in the virtual environment to appear to shift in position. For developers who seek to design VR experiences that are rooted in real environments, drift can create large errors in positional tracking if left uncorrected over time. Although much of the current VR hardware makes use of external tracking devices to mitigate positional and rotational drift, the creation of head-mounted displays that can operate without the use of extremal tracking devices would make VR hardware more portable and flexible, and may therefore be a goal for future development. Until technology advances sufficiently to completely overcome the hardware problems that cause drift, software solutions are a viable option to correct for it. It may be possible to speed up and slow down users as they move though the virtual world in order to bring their tracked position back into alignment with their position in the real world. If speed changes can be implemented without users noticing the alteration, it may offer a seamless solution that does not interfere with the VR experience.
