Welcome to Preparing for the Future, a panel on educational issues in computergraphics. The field of computergraphics education, as no other, combines the disciplines of science and art, and in this sense presents computergraphics instructors in both art and science with some unique problems not faced by their counterparts in other fields. As computergraphics courses become a standard addition in art and science curricula, the way in which we prepare students for this evolutionary field is changing. This panel explores the methods of establishing computergraphics curriculum and maintaining these programs. Panel members will share curricula developments and goals, its integration with existing courses, plan growth, raising monetary resources, hardware and software selection, and various educational issues. This session's panelists come from varied backgrounds - private and public institutions with limited and unlimited resources to share their experiences with you. The first panelist will be Wayne Carlson, an assistant professor in the department of computer and information science at the Ohio State University.

A volume image understanding workstation is under development for processing and displaying a variety of medical 3D data types. The hardware consists of symbolic and multiple numeric processors, binocular stereoscopic display, unique direct 3D pointer, voice input and output and other 3D support tools. Volumetric software consists of a volume window manager, Mayo Clinics' Analyze program, and the Digital Stereo Microscope algorithms that allow discrete 3D data to be examined in much the same way an optical stereo microscope is used to examine transparent real samples. The perception of medical 3D data has received little attention and psychophysical studies are planned that will examine the investigators ability to resolve detail in 3D space.

We give an oracle under which BPP is equal to probabilistic linear time, an unusual collapse of a complexity time hierarchy. In addition, we also give oracles where Δ2P is contained in probabilistic linear time and where BPP has linear sized circuits, as well as oracles for the negation of these questions. This indicates that these questions will not be solved by techniques that relativize. Finally, we note that probabilistic linear time can not contain both NP and BPP, implying that there are languages solvable by interactive proof systems that can not be solved in probabilistic linear time.

The SimKit system is an integrated set of general-purpose simulation and modeling tools built in and on the Knowledge Engineering Environment (KEE) software development system. SimKit is used to build knowledge-based simulations. By knowledge-based is meant an approach that utilizes a variety of techniques that have emerged from artificial intelligence, including: the Lisp programming environment;high-resolution bitmap graphics;object-oriented programming;frame-based knowledge representation with inheritance;active value or 'demons';and rule-based reasoning. Knowledge-based simulations are more understandable, interactive, accessible, and extensible than simulations built using conventional techniques. In addition, knowledge-based simulations can easily be integrated with other knowledge system applications.

The Exploratory Visualization (Exvis) project at the University of Lowell is devoted to the study of new technologies for the visualization of scientific data. Traditional visualization techniques are limited in the number of data dimensions that they can present. Also, they are generally done in batch mode, with the analyst providing input at the beginning of the process and receiving output at the end, but having no opportunity to direct the process itself. We are interested in approaches to scientific visualization that provide for the representation of very high-dimensional data and that support direct interaction between the data and the analyst. We present here a description of the Exvis project and of its goals. We discuss in detail one particularly promising new technology for interactive visualization: creating iconographic displays that exploit the human observer's innate texture perception abilities. We describe our prototype implementation and provide several illustrative uses from diverse data domains including satellite imagery, census data, epidemiological data, and solutions of partial differential equations. Finally, we discuss our approaches to studying the formal foundation of the iconographic display approach and summarize the future directions of our work.

The authors discuss the Intel i860 processor, a RISC (reduced-instruction-set-computer)-based microprocessor incorporating a RISC core with memory management, a floating point unit, and caches on a single chip. The 1,000,000 transistors allow a single-chip implementation with highly optimized interunit communication and wide internal data buses. The parallelism and pipelining between the execution units, and the innovative cache management techniques are under the explicit control of software. Vectorizable applications can use the pipelined adder and multiplier units to achieve up to 80 MFLOP at 40 MHz for the inner loops of common calculations. Special instructions allow using the data cache as a flexible vector register and support a high data bandwidth from the main memory. To support visualization of data, special hardware for three-dimensional graphics is included.
