We present techniques which create a consistent illumination between real and virtual objects inside an application specific optical see-through display: the virtual showcase. We use projectors and cameras to capture reflectance information from diffuse real objects and to illuminate them under new synthetic lighting conditions. Matching direct and indirect lighting effects, such as shading, shadows, reflections and color bleeding can be approximated at interactive rates in such a controlled mixed environment.

We propose a uniform and general framework for defining and dealing with Voronoi Diagrams. In this framework a Voronoi Diagram is a partition of a domain D induced by a finite number of real valued functions on D. Valuable insight can be gained when one considers how these real valued functions partition DXR. With this view it turns out that the standard Euclidean Voronoi Diagram of point sets in R along with its order-κ generalizations are intimately related to certain arrangements of hyperplanes. This fact can be used to obtain new Voronoi Diagram algorithms. We also discuss how the formalism of arrangements can be used to solve certain intersection and union problems.
In this paper we explore the consequences of different color palettes on the user's experience of emotion as conveyed by facial expression. Artists have used colors and painting techniques to convey emotions in th...

This Research through Design paper explores how object detection may be applied to a large digital art museum collection to facilitate new ways of encountering and experiencing art. We present the design and evaluation of an interactive application called SMKExplore, which allows users to explore a museum's digital collection of paintings by browsing through objects detected in the images, as a novel form of open-ended exploration. We provide three contributions. First, we show how an object detection pipeline can be integrated into a design process for visual exploration. Second, we present the design and development of an app that enables exploration of an art museum's collection. Third, we ofer refections on future possibilities for museums and HCI researchers to incorporate object detection techniques into the digitalization of museums.

We present a novel method to encode four data channels in a volumetric data set, and render it at interactive frame rates with maximum intensity projection (MIP) using textured polygons. The first three channels are stored in the volume texture’s red, green, and blue components. The fourth channel is stored in the alpha channel. To achieve real-time rendering speed we are using a pixel shader.

Recent trends in the manufacturing and sales of home computers indicate that a new form of instruction must be developed for teaching programming in the home. Students learn programming from interacting with computers and other students in a classroom setting. The home user may not have this option. Manuals do not teach; they are good for looking up information you have forgotten. Workbooks and textbooks do not have a structure conducive to teaching—you have to understand everything before you can figure out “undiagnosible syntax error” or “OC4.” An approach has been developed at UICC which uses sophisticated error handling and modest program verification to supervise the beginning user while he/she is constructing and executing computergraphics programs. New, inexperienced computer users are now doing interesting (to them) programs within a half hour. This “interactive workbook” concept will be expanded and is currently a working prototype of a teaching package to be available on a home computergraphics/color TV system next year.
In this paper we use computational techniques to explore the Aztec board game of Patolli. Rules for the game were documented by the Spanish explorers that ultimately destroyed the Aztec civilization, yet there is no g...
