Real time rendering of iso contour surfaces is problematic for large complex data sets. An algorithm is presented that allows very rapid representation of an interval set surrounding an iso contour surface. The algorithm draws upon three main ideas. A fast indexing scheme is used to select only those data points near the contour surface. Hardware assisted splatting is then employed on these data points to produce a volume rendering of the interval set. Finally, by shifting a small window through the indexing scheme or data space, animated volumes are produced showing the changing contour values. In addition to allowing fast selection and rendering of the data, the indexing scheme allows a much compressed representation of the data by eliminating "noise" data points.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed conference proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Biomedical Simulation (ISBMS) which was held in Strasbourg, France, in October 2014. Biomedical modeling and simulation are at the center stage of worldwide efforts to understand and replicate the behavior and function of the human organism. Large scale initiatives such as the Physiome Project, Virtual Physiological Human and Blue Brain Project aim to develop advanced computational models that will facilitate the understanding of the integrative function of cells, organs, and organisms, with the ultimate goal of delivering truly personalized medicine. At the same time, progress in modeling, numerical techniques and haptics has enabled more complex and interactive simulations. The 27 revised full papers (including 16 regular and 11 short papers) were carefully selected from 45 submissions and cover topics such as training systems and haptics, physics-based registration, vascular modeling and simulation, image and simulation, modeling, surgical planning, analysis, characterization and validation.

This work presents interactive flow visualization techniques specifically adapted for PowerFLOWTM, a lattice-based CFD code from the EXA corporation. Their Digital PhysicsTM fluid simulation technique is performed on a hierarchy of locally refined cartesian grids with a fine voxel resolution in areas of interesting flow features. Among other applications the PowerFLOW solver is used for aerodynamic simulations in car body development where the advantages of automatic grid generation from CAD models is of great interest. In a joint project with BMW and EXA we are developing a visualization tool which incorporates virtual reality techniques for the interactive exploration of the large scalar and vector data sets. In this paper we describe the specific data structures and interpolation techniques and we report on fast particle tracing taking into account collisions with the car body geometry. An OpenGL Optimizer based implementation allows for the inspection of the flow with particle probes and slice probes at interactive frame rates.

Traditional character animation has superiority in conveying stylized information about characters and events, but producing it requires a lot of labor and time. computer generated animation improves greatly on efficiency, but is poor in expressing stylized motion. In this paper, we propose a sketching-based animation synthesis system. The system contains an interface for the user to draw the sketches or load sketch images. Then the system extracts 2D pose from the input strokes and maps the 2D pose to 3D pose that is in a motion capture database. During the mapping, a series of matching 3D pose candidates are found. The user can select the most satisfying candidate as the 3D key pose for the later animation synthesis. The system synthesizes an animation based on the 3D key poses by finding a path in the motion capture database and generating transition motions if needed.

Smartphones can capture diverse spatio-temporal data about an individual;including both intermittent self-report, and continuous passive data collection from onboard sensors and applications. The resulting personal data streams can support powerful inference about the user's state, behavior, well-being and environment. However making sense and acting on these multi-dimensional, heterogeneous data streams requires iterative and intensive exploration of the datasets, and development of customized analysis techniques that are appropriate for a particular health domain. Lifestreams is a modular and extensible open-source data analysis stack designed to facilitate the exploration and evaluation of personal data stream sense-making. Lifestreams analysis modules include: feature extraction from raw data;feature selection;pattern and trend inference;and interactive visualization. The system was iteratively designed during a 6-month pilot in which 44 young mothers used an open-source participatory mHealth plat form to record both self-report and passive data about their diet, stress and exercise. Feedback as participants and the study coordinator attempted to use the Lifestreams dashboard to make sense of their data collected during this intensive study were critical inputs into the design process. In order to explore the generality and extensibility of Lifestreams pipeline, it was then applied to two additional studies with different datasets, including a continuous stream of audio data, self-report data, and mobile system analytics. In all three studies, Lifestreams' integrated analysis pipeline was able to identify key behaviors and trends in the data that were not otherwise identified by participants.

Wrinkles are important for realistic facial animation and modeling because they aid in recognizing human's expressions as well as person's age. Different techniques have been used to generate wrinkles, whether it is fine-scale or large-scale wrinkles. This paper presents a technique on modeling large-scale wrinkles, also known as the expressive wrinkle, on human face by using points instead of triangular meshes. The wrinkle will be modeled on a drawing basis, where users can see the effect directly once the shape and location of the wrinkle has been specified on the 3D face mesh itself. After that, the data involved in modeling the wrinkle are retrieved and processed. A new wrinkle shape function will be introduced to capture the realism of the wrinkle generated where it will be applied during the process.

Human activities, and in particular large scale industrial, energy, construction, water resources, or agricultural projects considerably affect the natural environment. Concern about these impacts and their immediate as well as long-term consequences makes the prediction and analysis of environmental impacts an important field of research. Among the most important tools for the prediction and analysis of these environmental impacts are various types of models. Numerical or symbolic simulation models implemented on computers, provide powerful and versatile tools for the assessment of potential environmental impacts for complex dynamic and spatially distributed systems. Designed to describe and simulate future impacts that are obviously not yet observable, models can also operate in data-poor situations, analyzing scenarios of sets of plausible assumptions. To assist in such numerical experimentation, models are built into interactive frameworks, coupled to various data bases that provide input data and parameter information, pre- and post-processors that help to design plausible and consistent simulation experiments and analyze them. Visualization of dynamic and spatially distributed processes in the form of animated computergraphics, and immediate response to what-if questions in a dialog-oriented interface are important elements of effective simulation modeling. In data-poor situations, models are useful for stimulating insight and intuitive understanding of complex patterns rather than providing exact answers. Insight into environmental relationships is supported by directly understandable, symbolic and graphical ways of presenting model results and, in general, by a conversational, interactive and symbolic approach to simulation modeling. Recent advances in fire science and computer modeling of fires allow scientists to predict fire growth and spread through structures. In this paper we describe a variety of visualizations of simulated room fires for use by both fire protection engineers and fire suppression personnel.
