With the rapid advancement of cloud-native computing, securing cloud environments has become an important task. Log-based Anomaly Detection (LAD) is the most representative technique used in different systems for attack detection and safety guarantee, where multiple LAD methods and relevant datasets have been proposed. However, even though some of these datasets are specifically prepared for cloud systems, they only cover limited cloud behaviors and lack information from a whole-system perspective. Another critical issue to consider is normality shift, which implies that the test distribution could differ from the training distribution and highly affect the performance of LAD. Unfortunately, existing works only focus on simple shift types such as chronological changes, while other cloud-specific shift types are ignored, e.g., different deployed cloud architectures. Therefore, a dataset that captures diverse cloud system behaviors and various types of normality shifts is *** fill this gap, we construct a dataset CAShift to evaluate the performance of LAD in cloud, which considers different roles of software in cloud systems, supports three real-world normality shift types (application shift, version shift, and cloud architecture shift), and features 20 different attack scenarios in various cloud system components. Based on CAShift, we conduct a comprehensive empirical study to investigate the effectiveness of existing LAD methods in normality shift scenarios. Additionally, to explore the feasibility of shift adaptation, we further investigate three continuous learning approaches, which are the most common methods to mitigate the impact of distribution shift. Results demonstrated that 1) all LAD methods suffer from normality shift where the performance drops up to 34%, and 2) existing continuous learning methods are promising to address shift drawbacks, but the ratio of data used for model retraining and the selection of algorithms highly affect the shift ada

A robotic system continuously measures its own motions and the external world during operation. Such measurements are with respect to some frame of reference, i.e., a coordinate system. A nontrivial robotic system has a large number of different frames and data have to be translated back-and-forth from a frame to another. The onus is on the developers to get such translation right. However, this is very challenging and error-prone, evidenced by the large number of questions and issues related to frame uses on developers' forum. Since any state variable can be associated with some frame, reference frames can be naturally modeled as variable types. We hence develop a novel type system that can automatically infer variables' frame types and in turn detect any type inconsistencies and violations of frame conventions. The evaluation on a set of 180 publicly available ROS projects shows that our system can detect 190 inconsistencies with 154 true positives. We reported 52 to developers and received 18 responses so far, with 15 fixed/acknowledged. Our technique also finds 45 violations of common practices.

Static analysis tools (SATs) have the potential to assist developers in fnding and fxing vulnerabilities in the early stages of software development, requiring them to be able to understand and act on tools' notifcations. To understand how helpful such SAT guidance is to developers, we ran an online experiment (N=132) where participants were shown four vulnerable code samples (SQL injection, hard-coded credentials, encryption, and logging sensitive data) along with SAT guidance, and asked to indicate the appropriate fx. Participants had a positive attitude towards both SAT notifcations and particularly liked the example solutions and vulnerable code. Seeing SAT notifcations also led to more detailed open-ended answers and slightly improved code correction answers. Still, most SAT (SpotBugs 67%, SonarQube 86%) and Control (96%) participants answered at least one code-correction question incorrectly. Prior software development experience, perceived vulnerability severity, and answer confdence all positively impacted answer accuracy. © 2021 acm.

Visual design provides the backdrop to most of our interactions over the Internet, but has not received as much analytical attention as textual content. Combining computational with qualitative approaches, we investigate the growing concern that visual design of the World Wide Web has homogenized over the past decade. By applying computer vision techniques to a large dataset of representative websites images from 2003-2019, we show that designs have become significantly more similar since 2007, especially for page layouts where the average distance between sites decreased by over 30%. Synthesizing interviews from 11 experienced web design professionals with our computational analyses, we discuss causes of this homogenization including overlap in source code and libraries, color scheme standardization, and support for mobile devices. Our results seek to motivate future discussion of the factors that influence designers and their implications on the future trajectory of web design.

Code search is an important and frequent activity for developers using computational notebooks (e.g., Jupyter). The fexibility of notebooks brings challenges for efective code search, where classic search interfaces for traditional software code may be limited. In this paper, we propose, NBSearch, a novel system that supports semantic code search in notebook collections and interactive visual exploration of search results. NBSearch leverages advanced machine learning models to enable natural language search queries and intuitive visualizations to present complicated intra- and inter-notebook relationships in the returned results. We developed NBSearch through an iterative participatory design process with two experts from a large software company. We evaluated the models with a series of experiments and the whole system with a controlled user study. The results indicate the feasibility of our analytical pipeline and the efectiveness of NBSearch to support code search in large notebook collections.

The ever-growing deployment scale of surveillance cameras and the users' increasing appetite for real-time queries have urged online video analytics. Synergizing the virtually unlimited cloud resources with agile edge processing would deliver an ideal online video analytics system;yet, given the complex interaction and dependency within and across video query pipelines, it is easier said than done. This paper starts with a measurement study to acquire a deep understanding of video query pipelines on real-world camera streams. We identify the potentials and practical challenges towards cloud-edge collaborative video analytics. We then argue that the newly emerged serverless computing paradigm is the key to achieve fine-grained resource partitioning with minimum dependency. We accordingly propose CEVAS, a Cloud-Edge collaborative Video Analytics system empowered by fine-grained Serverless pipelines. It builds flexible serverless-based infrastructures to facilitate fine-grained and adaptive partitioning of cloud-edge workloads for multiple concurrent query pipelines. With the optimized design of individual modules and their integration, CEVAS achieves real-time responses to highly dynamic input workloads. We have developed a prototype of CEVAS over Amazon Web Services (AWS) and conducted extensive experiments with real-world video streams and queries. The results show that by judiciously coordinating the fine-grained serverless resources in the cloud and at the edge, CEVAS reduces 86.9% cloud expenditure and 74.4% data transfer overhead of a pure cloud scheme and improves the analysis throughput of a pure edge scheme by up to 20.6%. Thanks to the fine-grained video content-aware forecasting, CEVAS is also more adaptive than the state-of-the-art cloud-edge collaborative scheme.

Evaluating novel authentication systems is often costly and time-consuming. In this work, we assess the suitability of using Virtual Reality (VR) to evaluate the usability and security of real-world authentication systems. To this end, we conducted a replication study and built a virtual replica of CueAuth [52], a recently introduced authentication scheme, and report on results from: (1) a lab-based in-VR usability study (N=20) evaluating user performance;(2) an online security study (N=22) evaluating system's observation resistance through virtual avatars;and (3) a comparison between our results and those previously reported in the real-world evaluation. Our analysis indicates that VR can serve as a suitable test-bed for human-centred evaluations of real-world authentication schemes, but the used VR technology can have an impact on the evaluation. Our work is a frst step towards augmenting the design and evaluation spectrum of authentication systems and ofers ground work for more research to follow. © 2021 acm.

The growing potential for facial emotion recognition (FER) technology has encouraged expedited development at the cost of rigorous validation. Many of its use-cases may also impact the diverse global community as FER becomes embedded into domains ranging from education to security to healthcare. Yet, prior work has highlighted that FER can exhibit both gender and racial biases like other facial analysis techniques. As a result, bias-mitigation research efforts have mainly focused on tackling gender and racial disparities, while other demographic related biases, such as age, have seen less progress. This work seeks to examine the performance of state of the art commercial FER technology on expressive images of men and women from three distinct age groups. We utilize four different commercial FER systems in a black box methodology to evaluate how six emotions - anger, disgust, fear, happiness, neutrality, and sadness - are correctly detected by age group. We further investigate how algorithmic changes over the last year have affected system performance. Our results found that all four commercial FER systems most accurately perceived emotion in images of young adults and least accurately in images of older adults. This trend was observed for analyses conducted in 2019 and 2020. However, little to no gender disparities were observed in either year. While older adults may not have been the initial target consumer of FER technology, statistics show the demographic is quickly growing more keen to applications that use such systems. Our results demonstrate the importance of considering various demographic subgroups during FER system validation and the need for inclusive, intersectional algorithmic developmental practices.

Although superconducting single flux quantum (SFQ) technologies offer the potential for low-latency operation with energy dissipation of the order of attojoules per gate, their inherently pulse-driven nature and stateful cells have led to designs in which every logic gate is clocked. This means that clocked buffers must be added to equalize logic path lengths, and every gate becomes a pipeline stage. We propose a different approach, where gates are clock-free and synchronous designs have a conventional look-and-feel. Despite being clock-free, however, the gates are state machines by nature. To properly manage these state machines, the logical clock cycle is composed of two synchronous alternating phases: the first of which implements the desired function, and the second of which returns the state machines to the ground state. Moreover, to address the challenges associated with the asynchronous implementation of Boolean NOT operations in pulse-based systems, values are represented as unordered binary codes - in particular, dual-rail codes. With unordered codes, AND and OR operations are functionally complete. We demonstrate that our new approach, xSFQ, with its dual-rail construction and alternating clock phases, along with "double-pumped" logical latches and a timing optimization through latch decomposition, is capable of implementing arbitrary digital designs without gate-level pipelining and the overheads that come with it. We evaluate energy-delay tradeoffs enabled by this approach through a mix of detailed analog circuit modeling, pulse-level discrete-event simulation, and high-level pipeline efficiency analysis. The resulting systems are shown to deliver energy-delay product (EDP) gains over conventional SFQ even with pipeline hazard ratios (HR) below 1%. For hazard ratios equal to 15% and 20% and a design resembling a RISC-V RV32I core (excluding the cost of interlock logic), xSFQ achieves 22x and 31x EDP savings, respectively.
