Industry and academia have strong incentives to adopt virtualization technologies. Such technologies can reduce the total cost of ownership or facilitate business models like cloud computing. These options have recently grown significantly with the rise of Kubernetes and the OCI runtime specification. Both enabled virtualization technology vendors to easily integrate their solution into existing infrastructures, leading to increased adoption. Making a detailed decision on a technology selection based on objective characteristics is a complex task. This specifically includes the instrumentation of performance characteristics that are an important aspect for a fair comparison. Moreover, a subsequent quantification of the isolation capability based on performance metrics is not readily available. In this paper, we instrument and determine the OCI runtime isolation capability by measuring virtualized system resources. We hereby build on two previous contributions, a proven isolation measurement workflow engine, and meaningful isolation metrics. The existing workflow engine is extended to integrate OCI runtime instrumentation as well as the novel isolation metrics. We indicate a quantifiable distinction between the isolation capabilities of these technologies. Researchers and industry alike can use the results to make decisions on the adoption of virtualization technology based on their isolation characteristics. Furthermore, our extended measurement workflow engine can be leveraged to conduct further experiments with new technologies, metrics, and scenarios.

Modern GPU systems are constantly evolving to meet the needs of computing-intensive applications in scientific and machine learning domains. However, there is typically a gap between the hardware capacity and the achievable application performance. This work aims to provide a better understanding of the Infinity Fabric interconnects on AMD GPUs and CPUs. We propose a test and evaluation methodology for characterizing the performance of data movements on multi-GPU systems, stressing different communication options on AMD MI250X GPUs, including point-to-point and collective communication, and memory allocation strategies between GPUs, as well as the host CPU. In a single-node setup with four GPUs, we show that direct peer-to-peer memory accesses between GPUs and utilization of the RCCL library outperform MPI-based solutions in terms of memory/communication latency and bandwidth. Our test and evaluation method serves as a base for validating memory and communication strategies on a system and improving applications on AMD multi-GPU computing systems. © 2024 IEEE.

The Triton Shared computing Cluster (TSCC) [1] is the San Diego Supercomputer Center ("Center"in the remaining text)'s primary campus research computing system. This paper describes the transition from TSCC 1.0 to TSCC 2.0, focusing on the implementation of new high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure components and management strategies. We detail our approach to overcoming challenges posed by node heterogeneity, enhancing job scheduling efficiency, and improving resource allocation and billing *** legacy TSCC 1.0 is described first, focusing on some critical issues we want to solve under TSCC 2.0. The HPC tools under TSCC 2.0 are then described. Lastly, the best practices and experiences learned are discussed. © 2024 IEEE.

Extreme Data is an incarnation of Big Data concept distinguished by the massive amounts of data that must be queried, communicated and analysed in (near) real-time by using a very large number of memory/storage elements and Exascale computing systems. Immediate examples are the scientific data produced at a rate of hundreds of gigabits-per-second that must be stored, filtered and analysed, the millions of images per day that must be mined/analyzed in parallel, the one billion of social data posts queried in real-time on an in-memory components database. Traditional disks or commercial storage cannot handle nowadays the extreme scale of such application data. Following the need of improvement of current concepts and technologies, ASPIDE's activities focus on data-intensive applications running on systems composed of up to millions of computing elements (Exascale systems). Practical results will include the methodology and software prototypes that will be designed and used to implement Exascale applications. The ASPIDE project contributed with the definition of a new programming paradigms, APIs, runtime tools and methodologies for expressing data-intensive tasks on Exascale systems, which can pave the way for the exploitation of massive parallelism over a simplified model of the system architecture, promoting high performance and efficiency, and offering powerful operations and mechanisms for processing extreme data sources at high speed and/or real-time. This work is continued now in the ADMIRE EuroHPC project.

A Large Scale Study and Classification of VirusTotal Reports on Phishing and Malware URLs

VirusTotal (VT) is a widely used scanning service for researchers and practitioners to label malicious entities and predict new security threats. Unfortunately, it is little known to the end-users how VT URL scanners decide on the maliciousness of entities and the attack types they are involved in (e.g., phishing or malware-hosting websites). In this paper, we conduct a systematic comparative study on VT URL scanners' behavior for different attack types of malicious URLs, in terms of 1) detection specialties, 2) stability, 3) correlations between scanners, and 4) lead/lag behaviors. Our findings highlight that the VT scanners commonly disagree with each other on their detection and attack type classification, leading to challenges in ascertaining the maliciousness of a URL and taking prompt mitigation actions according to different attack types. This motivates us to present a new highly accurate classifier that helps correctly identify the attack types of malicious URLs at the early stage. This in turn assists practitioners in performing better threat aggregation and choosing proper mitigation actions for different attack types.

In nationwide efforts to promote computing education, undergraduate research experiences (UREs) have been identified as an effective way to not only motivate research and graduate studies, but to also increase participation and retention, promote disciplinary knowledge and diversity in the field, develop strong soft and technical skills, and integrate students in the community. Yet, despite these many benefits, opportunities for UREs are still limited. And even though the challenge of finding faculty mentors is one of the major barriers, there is still limited research exploring the faculty perspective in greater depth. In this paper, we leveraged an onboarding process for a new program to interview twelve engineering faculty doing computing-related research in a large public research institution about their experiences and perspectives towards UREs. These faculty members ranged in experience from working regularly with many undergraduates to having limited or no prior experience. Our analysis uncovered four main themes on barriers to UREs around the central concept of misalignment: misalignments between the educational system and research, misalignments between faculty and student goals, misalignments between expectations of research and reality, and the challenge of getting to and maintaining steady state when trying to create alignment. We conclude by discussing design implications for designing programs and computational ecosystems that scale access to UREs by helping to overcome misalignments.

SLITS: Sparsity-Lightened Intelligent Thread Scheduling

Adiverse set of scheduling objectives (e.g., resource contention, fairness, priority, etc.) breed a series of objectivespecific schedulers for multi-core architectures. Existing designs incorporate thread-to-thread statistics at runtime, and schedule threads based on such an abstraction (we formalize thread-to-thread interaction as the Thread-Interaction Matrix). However, such an abstraction also reveals a consistently-overlooked issue: the Thread-Interaction Matrix (TIM) is highly sparse. Therefore, existing designs can only deliver sub-optimal decisions, since the sparsity issue limits the amount of thread permutations (and its statistics) to be exploited when performing scheduling decisions. We introduce Sparsity-Lightened Intelligent Thread Scheduling (SLITS), a general scheduler design for mitigating the sparsity issue of TIM, with the customizability for different scheduling objectives. SLITS is designed upon the key insight that: the sparsity issue of the TIM can be effectively mitigated via advanced Machine Learning (ML) techniques. SLITS has three components. First, SLITS profiles Thread Interactions for only a small number of thread permutations, and form the TIM using the run-time statistics. Second, SLITS estimates the missing values in the TIM using Factorization Machine (FM), a novel ML technique that can fill in the missing values within a large-scale sparse matrix based on the limited information. Third, SLITS leverages Lazy Reschedule, a general mechanism as the building block for customizing different scheduling policies for different scheduling objectives. We show how SLITS can be (1) customized for different scheduling objectives, including resource contention and fairness;and (2) implemented with only negligible hardware costs. We also discuss how SLITS can be potentially applied to other contexts of thread scheduling. We evaluate two SLITS variants against four state-of-the-art scheduler designs. Weather conditions such as rain and clouds have been found to have a significant impact on the performance of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. Since these systems use beam-forming for the ground-space communication, an accurate analysis of weather impact on the performance requires the availability of high-resolution weather data. In contrast to rain, measuring cloudiness at high resolutions is a challenging task. Typically, it is measured using GEO or LEO satellites that either have spatial resolutions in the magnitude of kilometers or temporal resolutions of multiple days. In this paper, we propose to detect clouds in images of the sky taken via cameras placed directly next to the LEO user terminal to observe relevant parts of the skies at high spatial and temporal resolutions. We build a prototype system based on a Raspberry Pi camera and evaluate the impact of clouds on Starlink performance in a six-month-long measurement study.

The majority of underground coal mines (UCMs) rely on wired-based communication system for communication as well as data transmission. Wireless systems find few usages due to many challenges associated with the underground structural features and dynamic nature of mine environment. However, during the last few years, the research focus has shifted towards the underground wireless communication system, because wireless communication technologies. In this review, an in-depth analysis on underground communication system for UCMs is provided. The existing research works in this field are categorized based on the technology used, namely wired, hybrid, and wireless communication technologies. In times of crisis, epidemiologists can come under great pressure to model rapidly evolving diseases and to produce analyses about the effects of potential public health interventions. Taking previously developed, tested, and validated model components as the base on which to prototype new infectious disease models can save precious time and effort. However, there is currently no systematic process for quickly navigating a corpus of existing epidemiological models or identifying and reusing their most useful components. In this paper, we propose a vision to accelerate the creation of prototype compartmental models for infectious diseases. We outline a semi-automated process that epidemiologists can use to create prototypes that have been partially completed with reused fragments from existing models. Epidemiologists can thus focus on modelling the novel aspects of an ongoing public health crisis, as opposed to aspects of it that are already more or less well understood in previous work. Our approach comprises five steps in total, including identifying useful components in a corpus of infectious disease models, generating potential candidate prototypes, and organizing them in a formal data structure that allows navigation and exploration by the modellers. We outline 13 challenges ahead and discuss potential solutions based on formal modelling techniques.
