Urban environments can inhibit the formation of publics due to their distracting nature and distant social ties. Yet, forming publics is critical for bringing and mobilizing citizens around issues. In this paper, we introduce a methodology that combines oral history collection and qualitative analysis to foster connections among youth in a North American public school. During our project, the youth interviewed classmates, guardians, and strangers from their community about the meaning of home, then collectively analyzed the oral histories using qualitative analysis techniques. Our findings highlight that this process generated unexpected connections around shared experiences despite the different backgrounds of project participants, thus fostering a sense of attachment to home as a cause for public formation. Our paper demonstrates the effectiveness of such approach in building attachments as a pre-cursor to public formation in community-centered work, while reflecting on the associated practical challenges like skill development, sustained engagement, and emotional labor. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). This paper introduces semi-automatic data tours to aid the exploration of complex networks. Exploring networks requires significant effort and expertise and can be time-consuming and challenging. Distinct from guidance and recommender systems for visual analytics, we provide a set of goal-oriented tours for network overview, ego-network analysis, community exploration, and other tasks. Based on interviews with five network analysts, we developed a user interface (NetworkNarratives) and 10 example tours. The interface allows analysts to navigate an interactive slideshow featuring facts about the network using visualizations and textual annotations. On each slide, an analyst can freely explore the network and specify nodes, links, or subgraphs as seed elements for follow-up tours. Two studies, comprising eight expert and 14 novice analysts, show that data tours reduce exploration effort, support learning about network exploration, and can aid the dissemination of analysis results. NetworkNarratives is available online, together with detailed illustrations for each tour.

This work sheds light on whether and how creative writers' needs are met by existing research and commercial writing support tools (WST). We conducted a need finding study to gain insight into the writers' process during creative writing through a qualitative analysis of the response from an online questionnaire and Reddit discussions on r/Writing. Using a systematic analysis of 115 tools and 67 research papers, we map out the landscape of how digital tools facilitate the writing process. Our triangulation of data reveals that research predominantly focuses on the writing activity and overlooks pre-writing activities and the importance of visualization. We distill 10 key takeaways to inform future research on WST and point to opportunities surrounding underexplored areas. Our work offers a holistic and up-to-date account of how tools have transformed the writing process, guiding the design of future tools that address writers' evolving and unmet needs. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). In the past decade personal listening technologies have been through a proliferation with headphones with novel features and smart speaker systems. A technology expected to be introduced to the public in coming years is sound zone systems, that allow interface-free personal listening for multiple users in the same space without overlap. As with all new technologies, it is difficult to ascertain what barriers may lay before successful user adoption. To that end, we conducted a four-week field study in five households. Through a thematic analysis, we discovered 10 barriers for adoption concerning sound zones grouped into three different aspects;Interaction and use, Current Standards and Practices, and Limitations of sound zone technology. In addition to the barriers, we discuss our work towards current personal listening technologies.

Hardware peripherals such as GPUs and FPGAs are commonly available in server-grade computing to accelerate specific compute tasks, from database queries to machine learning. CSPs have integrated these accelerators into their infrastructure and let tenants combine and configure these components flexibly, based on their needs. Securing I/O interfaces is critical to ensure proper isolation between tenants in these highly complex, heterogeneous, yet shared server systems, especially in the cloud, where some peripherals may be under control of a malicious tenant. In this work, we investigate the interfaces that connect peripheral hardware components to each other and the rest of the system. We show that the I/O memory management units (IOMMUs) - intended to ensure proper isolation of peripherals - are the source of a new attack surface: the I/O translation look-aside buffer (IOTLB). We show that by using an FPGA accelerator card one can gain precise information over IOTLB activity. That information can be used for covert communication between peripherals without bothering CPU or to directly extract leakage from neighboring accelerated compute jobs such as GPU-accelerated databases. We present the first qualitative and quantitative analysis of this newly uncovered attack surface before fine-grained channels become widely viable with the introduction of CXL and PCIe 5.0. In addition, we propose possible countermeasures that software developers, hardware designers, and system administrators can use to suppress the observed side-channel leakages and analyze their implicit costs.

As the popularity of Cybersecurity-related curricula grows both among students and institutions at the higher education level, there exist many questions regarding how degree programs should be structured and what specific content should be taught in them. Many areas of study that were once thought to be somewhat removed from a networking or information security focus have created new courses, or adapted existing ones, to create degree programs based on some aspect of Cybersecurity. Whether the program is titled Information Security, Information Governance, Business systems Security, Network Security, or a host of other variations and terms, the heart of all of them is Cybersecurity. In other words, all of these programs revolve around the securing of data, systems, networks, and their physical footprints in organization. As an important component of Cyber-Physical systems (CPS), wireless sensor network faces challenges of computation, communication and privacy. For employing DNN with large capacity in CPS, splitting computing (SC) is proposed, in which transmitting intermediate data is the bottleneck of system efficiency. In this paper, targeting to the compression and privacy limitations occur in the original extracted feature data, we proposed a privacy-preserved intermediate feature compression framework. Therein, a hybrid feature compression module composed of a knowledge-based adaptor network and a traditional video codec is proposed. A noise-based privacy enhancement and domain-concentration cooperative privacy preserving approach is developed. Evaluations are conducted on two DNN models among two datasets, proving the proposed method can achieve better analysis accuracy as well as higher degree of privacy preserving than HEVC. © 2022 acm.

Assessing urban infrastructure and environment quality at scale remains a challenge. This work presents a multimodal sensing framework that integrates computer vision-based infrastructure analysis with mobile air quality monitoring to explore urban conditions beyond the camera's field of view. A vehicle-mounted system captures video data for semantic segmentation of roads and buildings while an air intake unit collects temperature, humidity, CO2, TVOC, and AQI levels. A preliminary test drive in Ann Arbor demonstrated expected correlations between CO2 and TVOC spikes in dense urban areas, providing a proof of concept for linking environmental sensing with visual urban analysis. Future work will refine sensor calibration, adaptive sampling strategies, and predictive modeling to improve accuracy and scalability.

The global scale and challenging requirements of modern cloud applications have led to the development of complex, widely distributed, service-oriented applications. One enabler of such applications is the remote procedure call (RPC), which provides location-independent communication and hides the myriad of cloud communication complexities and requirements within the RPC stack. Understanding RPCs is thus one key to understanding the behavior of cloud applications. While there have been numerous studies of RPCs in distributed systems, as well as attempts to optimize RPC overheads with both software and hardware, there is still a lack of knowledge about the characteristics of RPCs "in the wild" in the modern cloud environment. To address this gap, we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first large-scale fleet-wide study of RPCs. Our study is conducted at Google, where we measured the infrastructure supporting Google's user-facing, billion-user web services, such as Google Search, Gmail, Maps, and YouTube, and the information and data management systems that support them. To carry out the study, we examined over 10,000 different RPC methods sampled from over one billion traces, along with statistics collected every 30 minutes over a period of nearly two years. Among other things, we consider the volume, throughput and growth rate of RPCs in the datacenter, the latency of RPCs and their components (the "RPC latency tax"), and the structure of RPC call chains. Our analysis shows that the characteristics, scope and complexity of RPCs at hyperscale differ significantly from the assumptions made in prior research. Overall, our work provides new insights into RPC usage and characteristics at the largest scale and motivates further research on optimizing the diverse behavior of this crucial communication mechanism.

Networked IoT systems have emerged in recent years to facilitate seamless connectivity, portability, and smarter functionality. Despite lending a plethora of benefits, IoT devices are exploited by adversaries for various illicit purposes. IoT systems are a popular target due to the lack of security traits in the design, and minimal available computational and storage resources on the devices. Among multiple threats, malicious applications a.k.a malware are seen as a pivotal security threat on IoT devices and networks. Many malware detection techniques have been proposed recently. However, the existing techniques focus either on general-purpose systems or assume the availability of abundant resources at their disposal for malware detection. However, for IoT devices, the ongoing workloads such as sensing, and on-device computations further minimize the available resources for malware detection. We propose a novel resource- and workload-aware malware detection integrated with distributed computing for IoT networked systems to address these challenges. The device analyzes the available resources for malware detection using a lightweight regression model. Depending on the available resources, ongoing workload executions, and communication cost the malware detection task is either performed on-device or offloaded to neighboring IoT nodes with sufficient resources. To ensure data integrity and user privacy, instead of offloading the whole malware detection, the classifier is partitioned and distributed over multiple nodes and further integrated at the parent node for malware detection. Experimental analysis shows that the proposed technique can achieve a speed-up of 9.8x compared to on-device inference while maintaining a malware detection accuracy of 96.7%.
