Large Language Model (LLM)-based in-application assistants, or copilots, can automate software tasks, but users often prefer learning by doing, raising questions about the optimal level of automation for an effective user experience. We investigated two automation paradigms by designing and implementing a fully automated copilot (AutoCopilot) and a semi-automated copilot (GuidedCopilot) that automates trivial steps while offering step-by-step visual guidance. In a user study (N=20) across data analysis and visual design tasks, GuidedCopilot outperformed AutoCopilot in user control, software utility, and learnability, especially for exploratory and creative tasks, while AutoCopilot saved time for simpler visual tasks. A follow-up design exploration (N=10) enhanced GuidedCopilot with task-and state-aware features, including in-context preview clips and adaptive instructions. Our findings highlight the critical role of user control and tailored guidance in designing the next generation of copilots that enhance productivity, support diverse skill levels, and foster deeper software engagement. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Characterizing human behaviors using mobile devices is crucial for the longitudinal monitoring of chronic diseases, such as mental health conditions and Alzheimer's Disease. Current solutions often either focus on detecting basic human activities (e.g., sitting, walking) or lack comprehensive analysis and interactive guidance based on sensor data. We present MobiBox, a lightweight mobile app for long-term behavior data collection and interactive health analysis. MobiBox captures multimodal data including high-resolution 9-axis IMU data and contextual information such as APP usage and network activities, and integrates Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate personalized guidances like interventions and daily summaries. Moreover, MobiBox features a closed-loop design that allows users rate these guidances, building a high-quality dataset to enhance performance of LLMs on mobile health applications. The quality of mobile web experience remains poor, partially as a result of complex websites and design choices that worsen performance, particularly for users on suboptimal networks or with low-end devices. Prior proposed solutions have seen limited adoption due to the demand they place on developers and content providers, and the performing infrastructure needed to support them. We argue that Document and Permissions Policies - ongoing efforts to enforce good practices on web design - may offer the basis for a readily-available and easily-adoptable solution, as they encode key best practices for web development. In this paper, as a first step, we evaluate the potential performance cost of violating these well understood best practices and how common such violations are in today's web. Our analysis shows, for example, that controlling for unsized-media policy, something applicable to 70% of the top Alexa websites, can indeed significantly reduce Cumulative Layout Shift, a core metric for evaluating the performance of the web.

Recent advances in large language models (LLM) offered human-like capabilities for comprehending emotion and mental states. Prior studies explored diverse prompt engineering techniques for improving classification performance, but there is a lack of analysis of prompt design space and the impact of each component. To bridge this gap, we conduct a qualitative thematic analysis of existing prompts for emotion and mental health classification tasks to define the key components for prompt design space. We then evaluate the impact of major prompt components, such as persona and task instruction, on classification performance by using four LLM models and five datasets. Modular prompt design offers new insights into examining performance variability as well as promoting transparency and reproducibility in LLM-based tasks within health and well-being intervention systems. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Community rules play a key part in enabling or constraining the behaviors of members in online communities. However, little is known regarding how and to what degree rule changes actually affect community dynamics. In this paper, we explore Reddit to understand how explicit rules may shape the structure of group discussions. Our work uses the top 2000 communities on Reddit over a 1.5 year period and a unique methodology pipeline including (1) establishing a rule taxonomy of behavior-governing rules across Reddit, (2) network analysis to measure discussion structures, and (3) conduct propensity score matching to observe how rule changes may affect network structure. Our study aims to contribute to proactive forms of moderation, and offers several implications for community designers, such as how greater clustering occurs in communities with greater structural regulation and that restriction on allowable content does not reduce the volume of user activity. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

We examine how micro-phenomenology, a qualitative research method developed to attend to, articulate, and analyse lived experience in fine detail, can be employed to study the experience of using digital systems. Micro-phenomenological interviews unpack the specific experiences of interviewees in fine-grained detail and have previously been acknowledged as a potent tool for Human-Computer Interaction Research. More recently, the method has been extended to comprise a structured analysis method to systematically analyse the temporal unfolding and qualitative dimensions of experiences captured by the interviews. This is the first paper demonstrating the combined use of interviews and analysis via a case in which they were employed to examine the experience of using WeUsedTo, a website for sharing experiences related to the COVID-19 pandemic. On this basis, we discuss the potentials of the method for eliciting and understanding experiential aspects of interactive systems, particularly pertaining to embodiment, temporality, attention, agency, and the systemic nature of experience. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Reflection is underexplored in Creativity Support Tool (CST) research, partly due to its ambiguous nature. We suggest that researchers could benefit from a measure of a CST's capacity to support reflection. To this end, we detail the first stages of development of the Reflection in Creative Experience Questionnaire (RiCE) - a lightweight questionnaire for differentiating between creative user experiences which exhibit more or less moments of reflection. We develop RiCE through i) an expert review of questionnaire items (n=10) and ii) an exploratory factor analysis (n=300) of the reviewed items. We also present a user study testing RiCE (n=58) across two time points (one week apart) with novel interfaces designed for creative writing and music making. Although we do not confirm validity, we identify four factors for RiCE which we suggest are interpretable in a conceptually meaningful way. Our formative studies contribute towards supporting future explorations on reflection with CSTs. © 2023 acm.

Sorting algorithms are fundamental to various computational tasks and have significant practical implications across diverse domains. While there is extensive literature on non-randomized sorting algorithms, there is comparatively little research on the performance of randomized versions of Quicksort, especially in comparison to unique algorithms such as Radix Sort and Hashing techniques. This paper presents a comparative analysis of three prominent sorting algorithms (Hash Table Sorting (Bucket Sort), Radix Sort, and Quick Sort) aiming to highlight the proficiency and stability of randomized versions of Quicksort:(Randomized Quicksort, Randomized Dual Pivot Quicksort, Randomized Hybrid Quicksort) against the other two. This paper also furthers the optimization of the threshold in Hybrid Quick Sort on random data sets. We experiment to find the optimal threshold in Hybrid Quick Sort across varying data variances and *** research aims to evaluate the performance and behavior of these algorithms under different input scenarios, including sorted data, reversed data, and random data. The research involves a comprehensive exploration of the key steps, variations, and design techniques of each algorithm, along with a comparison of their asymptotic time complexities. In addition, the research outlines the design of experiments, detailing the input sizes used for empirical evaluation. The findings from this comparative study provide valuable insights into the strengths, weaknesses, and practical applicability of each algorithm in real-world contexts. By offering recommendations for the selection and application of sorting techniques in various problem domains, this research aims to contribute to the understanding and utilization of efficient sorting algorithms and how these algorithms face off against randomized versions of Quicksort. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Artificial intelligence (AI) applications have become an integral part of our society. However, studying AI as one entity or studying idiosyncratic applications separately both have limitations. Thus, this study used computational methods to categorize ten different AI roles prevalent in our everyday life and compared laypeople's perceptions of them using online survey data (N = 727). Based on theoretical factors related to the fundamental nature of AI, the principal component analysis revealed two dimensions that categorize AI: human involvement and AI autonomy. K-means clustering identified four AI role clusters: tools (low in both dimensions), servants (high human involvement and low AI autonomy), assistants (low human involvement and high AI autonomy), and mediators (high in both dimensions). Multivariate analyses of covariances revealed that people assessed AI mediators the most and AI tools the least favorably. Demographics also influenced laypeople's assessments of AI. The implications of these results are discussed.

In the Wizard-of-Oz study paradigm, human "wizards"perform not-yet-implemented system behavior, simulating, among others, how autonomous robots could interact in public to see how unwitting bystanders respond. This paper analyzes a 60-minute video recording of two wizards in a public plaza who are operating two trash-collecting robots within their line of sight. We take an ethnomethodology and conversation analysis perspective to scrutinize interactions between the wizards and the people in the plaza, focusing on critical instances where one robot gets stuck and requires collaborative intervention by the wizards. Our analysis unpacks how the wizards deal with emergent problems by pushing one robot into the other, how they manage front and backstage interactions, and how they monitor the location of each other's robots. We discuss how scrutinizing the work of wizards can inform explorative Wizard-of-Oz paradigms, the design of multi-agent robot systems, and the operation of urban robots from a distance. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
