In this paper we present the "SewSimple", an E-textile prototyping kit designed to support computational making with the BBC micro:bit, and discuss findings from a preliminary mixed-method evaluation involving twelve schoolchildren aged 9-11 at a local fee-paying primary school. Our research indicates that the "SewSimple" design effectively improves the construction of stable circuitry in E-textile projects compared to using the BBC micro:bit alone. Through qualitative analysis of interviews, photos, and video clips, we propose design recommendations that include hardware improvements such as repositioning grommets (plated-through-holes), customizing covers, and improving labeling. Additionally, we suggest enhancements in instructional design targeting crafting skills and conductivity knowledge, aimed at collectively enhancing user experience. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This paper presents a detailed investigation into the propagation loss characteristics of silicon nitride strip waveguides at an 850 nm wavelength, utilizing a random forest model. The primary aim is to optimize low-loss conditions in photonic integrated circuits (PICs). To achieve this, a systematic 2x3 full factorial design of experiments is implemented, focusing on different layers within the PIC framework. The study revolves around a critical examination of how the waveguide width influences propagation loss. Leveraging the random forest model, known for its high precision in complex data analysis, we delve into the correlation between various design elements and their impact on loss. This methodology not only aids in pinpointing the pivotal factors affecting loss but also elucidates their interplay, particularly emphasizing the role of waveguide width. One of the key contributions of this research is the identification of optimal material configurations that significantly reduce loss. This is instrumental in enhancing the efficiency of PICs, a crucial aspect for their performance in applications such as optical communications and photonic computing. Our approach uniquely combines empirical data analysis with machine learning techniques, offering a novel perspective in photonic engineering research. The findings of this study not only shed light on the complex dynamics of waveguide design but also pave the way for the development of more efficient and effective photonic systems. This research stands to make a significant impact in the field, presenting a comprehensive methodology for designing low-loss silicon nitride strip waveguides, thereby contributing to the advancement of photonic technologies.

The security of IoT (Internet of Things) devices and the protection of sensitive information processed by these devices such as personal data, sensor values, process-related information is an important and difficult challenge. A major task in IoT communication is secure identification of devices. Unfortunately, traditional cryptographic methods are often not suitable for IoT devices due to their limited hardware resources. However, typical methods are computationally intensive, require a large amount of memory, and have a high-power consumption. On the other hand, Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are low-cost and lightweight hardware-based primitives that can be used as a security component to protect data against third parties and thus increase security of a device. In this paper, the challenges and vulnerabilities in the development of PUF-based authentication protocols are presented. To this end, a security analysis of different approaches known from literature are discussed. Furthermore, possible attack vectors and prevention techniques are also considered. © 2024 IEEE.

The concept of "eating the rainbow" has emerged as a promising strategy for promoting healthy food choices. This study investigates the relationship between human and computer perceived colorfulness and healthiness in food images. We surveyed 25 diverse participants who rated the colorfulness and healthiness of 60 food images, and we applied a computational colorfulness metric to these images under three conditions: original image, masked food and dishware, and masked food only. Results revealed a weak but significant positive association between human-rated and computer-rated colorfulness, and a significant positive association between human-rated colorfulness and perceived healthiness, regardless of nutrition education background. However, we found no significant correlation between computer-analyzed colorfulness and human-perceived healthiness across all image types. This discrepancy highlights the complex relationship between food colorfulness and perceived healthiness, emphasizing the need for more sophisticated computational models that better align with human perception in AI-assisted dietary tools. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Live drills are the gold standard for mass casualty incident (MCI) training but are often too resource-intensive for widespread implementation. Immersive technologies offer a promising alternative, but can they deliver comparable fidelity and effectiveness? Working with a local disaster response academy, this paper investigated the potential of Augmented Virtuality (AV) in MCI training through two phases. First, we conducted a landscape analysis of 126 papers across the virtuality continuum, revealing trends in population, training focus, and evaluation metrics. Second, we empirically evaluated an AV system for mass casualty triage training against traditional role-playing and Virtual Reality (VR) approaches, involving 60 trainees in an operational curriculum. Results indicated that both AV and VR surpassed traditional simulations, with AV's tactile integration significantly enhancing physical engagement, satisfaction, and triage accuracy. Through the lens of triage, we discussed the broader practical implications of integrating immersive technologies like AV into real-world MCI education. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In order to easily and accurately measure the junction temperature of high-power LED, this paper designs a new k-value calibration module based on LabVIEW platform, and develops an improved LED junction temperature measurement system by combining hardware equipment such as thermostat, data acquisition card, constant current source and temperature sensor, aiming at the huge workload brought by fitting the voltage temperature coefficient K under large current with small current data and the measurement error caused by self heating effect. The measurement system can measure the LED junction temperature in real time and store the required data. Compared with the measured junction temperature by forward voltage method, the maximum relative error is 1.4%, which indicates that the system has high measurement accuracy. © 2024 SPIE.

This study investigates the application of regression analysis as a tool for identifying patterns in atmospheric air quality monitoring data collected from IoT-based monitoring systems. Given the increasing importance of air pollution control and environmental safety, precise analytical methods are required to assess the relationships between pollutant concentrations and external factors such as meteorological conditions. The research focuses on employing the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression method to analyze the influence of key atmospheric parameters—including temperature, humidity, wind speed, and radiation—on air quality indices, specifically the Air Quality Index (AQI) and the Common Air Quality Index (CAQI). The study is based on data obtained from a network of IoT-enabled sensors deployed across various monitoring stations, which continuously measure air pollutants and meteorological parameters in real-time. A custom-built analytical module was developed to facilitate flexible data selection, enabling comparative assessments across different time frames, monitoring stations, and measurement parameters. Through statistical modeling, it was determined that radiation significantly influences both AQI and CAQI, while wind speed has a more pronounced effect during daytime hours. Furthermore, the study revealed that hourly aggregation of pollutant data is optimal for CAQI calculations, whereas daily averages better align with AQI assessments. The findings highlight the advantages of integrating IoT technology with regression-based analysis in modern air quality monitoring systems. By leveraging Python-based statistical tools such as StatsModels, this approach enables the identification of critical environmental factors affecting air pollution levels, thereby supporting more effective predictive modeling and decision-making in environmental policy and urban planning. The ability to automatically infer relevant aspects of human users' thoughts and feelings is crucial for technologies to adapt their behaviors in complex interactions intelligently (e.g., social robots or tutoring systems). Research on multimodal analysis has demonstrated the potential of technology to provide such estimates for a broad range of internal states and processes. However, constructing robust enough approaches for deployment in real-world applications remains an open problem. The MSECP-Wild workshop series serves as a multidisciplinary forum to present and discuss research addressing this challenge. This 4.h iteration focuses on addressing varying contextual conditions (e.g., throughout an interaction or across diferent situations and environments) in intelligent systems as a crucial barrier for more valid real-world predictions and actions. Submissions to the workshop span eforts relevant to multimodal data collection and context-sensitive modeling. These works provide important impulses for discussions of the state-of-the-art and opportunities for future research on these subjects.

Digital lutherie is a sub-domain of digital craft focused on creating digital musical instruments: high-performance devices for musical expression. It represents a nuanced and challenging area of human-computer interaction that is well established and mature, offering the opportunity to observe designers' work on highly demanding human-computer interfaces. This paper explores how and why digital luthiers choose their tools and how these tools relate to the challenges they face. Findings from 27 standardised open-ended interviews with prominent digital luthiers from commercial, research, independent and artistic backgrounds are analysed through reflexive thematic analysis. Our discussion explores their perspectives, finding that a process of pragmatic rationalisation and environmental influences play a significant role in tool selection. We also present how challenges faced by digital luthiers relate to social creativity and meta-design. These findings build upon the existing literature that examines the designer-tool relationship.

Even well-intentioned researchers may engage in health equity tourism (HET). We describe our two-year engagement with under-resourced community sites to provide insights into fostering genuine commitments to remedying health disparities. To explore implications for mobile health (mHealth) design for Black older adults with low income, we employed reflexive, qualitative methods based on outreach activity and semi-structured interviews with 25 community members. Our analysis highlights the importance of accessible self-learning opportunities to nurture technological interest. Our findings also suggest varying loci of control in health, and that mistrust motivates informal support networks and mHealth usage. Based on our work, we provide actionable recommendations for HCI researchers to mitigate HET. In addition, we reframe our findings through a social-ecological perspective to better understand the interplays between technology and health, and generate insights into how mHealth design can better serve under-resourced communities. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
