analysis of human motion data can reveal valuable insights about the utilization of space and interaction of humans with their environment. To support this, we present AvatAR, an immersive analysis environment for the in-situ visualization of human motion data, that combines 3D trajectories with virtual avatars showing people's detailed movement and posture. Additionally, we describe how visualizations can be embedded directly into the environment, showing what a person looked at or what surfaces they touched, and how the avatar's body parts can be used to access and manipulate those visualizations. AvatAR combines an AR HMD with a tablet to provide both mid-air and touch interaction for system control, as well as an additional overview device to help users navigate the environment. We implemented a prototype and present several scenarios to show that AvatAR can enhance the analysis of human motion data by making data not only explorable, but experienceable.

Choosing what to eat requires navigating a large volume of information and various competing factors. While recommendation systems are an effective approach to assist users with this culinary decision-making, they typically prioritise similarity to a query or user profile to give relevant results. This can expose users to an increasingly narrow band of phenomena, which could compromise dietary diversity, a factor in dietary quality. We designed Q-Chef, which combines a recipe recommendation system with a personalised model of surprise, and conducted a study to identify if surprise-eliciting recipes affect food decisions. Our study utilises a rigorous thematic analysis with over 40 participants to explore how computational models of surprise influence recipe choice. We also explored how these factors differed when people were presented with "surprising-yet-tasty" recipes, as opposed to just "tasty" recipes, and identified that being presented with surprising choices is more likely to elicit situational interest and prompt reflection on choices. We conclude with a set of suggestions for the design of future surprise-eliciting recipe systems.

analysis is a key part of usability testing where UX practitioners seek to identify usability problems and generate redesign suggestions. Although previous research reported how analysis was conducted, the findings were typically focused on individual analysis or based on a small number of professionals in specific geographic regions. We conducted an online international survey of 279 UX practitioners on their practices and challenges while collaborating during data analysis. We found that UX practitioners were often under time pressure to conduct analysis and adopted three modes of collaboration: independently analyze different portions of the data and then collaborate, collaboratively analyze the session with little or no independent analysis, and independently analyze the same set of data and then collaborate. Moreover, most encountered challenges related to lack of resources, disagreements with colleagues regarding usability problems, and difficulty merging analysis from multiple practitioners. We discuss design implications to better support collaborative data analysis.

Code Large Language Models (LLMs) enhance software development efficiency by automatically generating code and documentation based on user requirements. However, code LLMs cannot synthesize specialized programs when tasked with IoT applications that require domain knowledge. While Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) offers a promising solution by fetching relevant domain knowledge, it necessitates powerful cloud LLMs (e.g., GPT-4) to process user requirements and retrieved contents, which raises significant privacy concerns. This approach also suffers from unstable networks and prohibitive LLM query costs. Moreover, it is challenging to ensure the correctness and relevance of the fetched contents. To address these issues, we propose GPIoT, a code generation system for IoT applications by fine-tuning locally deployable Small Language Models (SLMs) on IoT-specialized datasets. SLMs have smaller model sizes, allowing efficient local deployment and execution to mitigate privacy concerns and network uncertainty. Furthermore, by fine-tuning SLMs with our IoT-specialized datasets, the SLMs' ability to synthesize IoT-related programs can be substantially improved. To evaluate GPIoT's capability in synthesizing programs for IoT applications, we develop a benchmark, IoTBench. Extensive experiments and user trials demonstrate the effectiveness of GPIoT in generating IoT-specialized code, outperforming state-of-the-art code LLMs with an average task accuracy increment of 64.7% and significant improvements in user satisfaction.

Extended Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) is a language and run-time system that allows non-superusers to extend the Linux and Windows operating systems by downloading user code into the kernel. To ensure that user code is safe to run in kernel context, BPF relies on a static analyzer that proves properties about the code, such as bounded memory access and the absence of operations that crash. The BPF static analyzer checks safety using abstract interpretation with several abstract domains. Among these, the domain of tnums (tristate numbers) is a key domain used to reason about the bitwise uncertainty in program values. This paper formally specifies the tnum abstract domain and its arithmetic operators. We provide the first proofs of soundness and optimality of the abstract arithmetic operators for tnum addition and subtraction used in the BPF analyzer. Further, we describe a novel sound algorithm for multiplication of tnums that is more precise and efficient (runs 33% faster on average) than the Linux kernel's algorithm. Our tnum multiplication is now merged in the Linux kernel.

Compute in space, e.g., in miniaturized satellites, requires dealing with special physical and boundary constraints, including the limited energy budget. These constraints impose strict operational conditions on the on-board data processing system and its capability in dealing with sophisticated workloads suchlike Machine Learning (ML). In the meantime, the breakthroughs in ML based on Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) in the last decade promise innovative solutions to expand the functional capabilities of on-board data processing and to drive the space industry forward. Therefore, due to the aforementioned special requirements, performance- and power-efficient, and novel solutions and architectures for deploying ML via, e.g., FPGA-enabled SoC, particularly Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) solutions, are gaining significant interest in the space industry. Therefore it is essential to conduct extensive benchmarking and feasibility and efficiency analyses in different aspects: such analyses would require the investigation of options for programming and deployment as well as the investigation of various real-world models and datasets. To this end, a research and development activity is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) General Support Technology Programme and is led by Airbus Defence and Space GmbH with the goal of developing an ML Application Benchmark (MLAB) that covers benchmarking aspects mentioned above. In this invited paper, we provide an overview of the MLAB project and discuss development and progress in various directions, including framework analyses, model, and dataset investigation. We elaborate on a benchmarking methodology developed in the context of this project to enable the analysis of various hardware platforms and options. In the end, focus on a particular use case of aircraft detection as a real-world example and provide an analysis of various performance and accuracy indicators including, accuracy, throughput, latency, and power consumption.

Selective exposure to online news occurs when users favor information that confirms their beliefs, creating filter bubbles and limiting diverse perspectives. Interactive systems can counter this by recommending different perspectives, but to achieve this, they need a real-time metric for selective exposure. We present an experiment where we evaluate Electroencephalography (EEG) and eyetracking as indicators for selective exposure by using eye tracking to recognize which textual parts participants read and using EEG to quantify the magnitude of selective exposure. Participants read online news while we collected EEG and eye movements with their agreement towards the news. We show that the agreement with news correlates positively with the theta band power in the parietal area. Our results indicate that future interactive systems can sense selective exposure using EEG and eye tracking to propose a more balanced information diet. This work presents an integrated experimental setup that identifies selective exposure using gaze and EEG-based metrics. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, such as Large Language Models (LLMs), have the transformative potential to empower education. However, utilizing such systems often requires technological infrastructure, including computers and internet access, which are unavailable in many underserved regions, particularly in the Global South. Despite these limitations, research indicates that smartphones are increasingly accessible even in these areas, presenting an opportunity to deliver advanced systems like LLMs through resource-constrained devices. Nevertheless, the technical feasibility of deploying and using LLMs on disconnected smartphones remains unexplored to the best of our knowledge. This paper presents an empirical study that developed an LLM-powered mobile application, deployed it on a smartphone, and evaluated its performance in terms of response time, memory usage, and storage utilization based on three lightweight LLMs (Tinyllama, Redpajama, and Qwen2). The results show that the overall response time ranged from one to two minutes, and memory usage varied between three and nearly five GB. While these findings demonstrate the technical feasibility of deploying LLMs on disconnected smartphones, the significant waiting time and memory consumption highlight the challenges of this approach. Therefore, although LLMs can be deployed on resource-constrained devices to provide equitable access to advanced educational technology, there is an urgent need to develop optimized alternatives suitable for underserved educational settings so that exploring LLMs in such context becomes practically feasible. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Particle accelerators are physically and technically complex systems. Their operation requires demanding beam control systems. To support the development of new components in a beam phase control system for a synchrotron, we present a CGRA-based hardware/software environment that is capable of simulating the fundamental beam behaviour, leading to a hardware-in-the-loop setup. We show that this setup is able to emulate the longitudinal phase oscillations of the particle bunches in real-time.

The persisting issue of emergency department (ED) overcrowding, notably in rural communities, has been aggravated by the recent Covid-19 pandemic. This dilemma results in longer wait times, patients leaving without treatment, and heightened staff burnout. Our study seeks to alleviate this problem by enhancing the application of the Emergency Severity Index (ESI), a critical tool for patient triage in EDs. We endeavor to develop a mathematical model for automatic ESI estimation using historical patient data, thereby augmenting triage process efficiency and consistency. Building upon previous research on real-time vitals collection through non-invasive wearables, and a graph model for patient urgency-based sorting, we present a comprehensive data analytics study on three years' worth of ED visit data from a rural Montana hospital. Multiple statistical models, including CART, MARS, and linear and logistic regressions, were utilized. Variables such as CC code, age group, and respiration rate emerged as significant ESI prediction influencers. Furthermore, regression analysis highlighted correlations between certain factors and medical condition severity, like being male with a lower body temperature corresponded to less severity. Remarkably, the linear regression model achieved a 70.21% ESI prediction accuracy rate using a reduced variable set, showcasing its real-world applicability. Our study lays the groundwork for AI and machine learning integration in improving prediction accuracy. It also invites replications across diverse geographic locations and healthcare systems, leading towards a universal understanding of ESI predictors and possibly a global triage system. These methodologies are poised to enhance ED efficiency and patient outcomes by reducing overcrowding. © 2023 Owner/Author.
