Integration of online and offline retail faces challenges in technology adoption, interaction style evolution and customer behavior shifts, while also being complicated by diverse perspectives from different stakeholders of consumers, retail staf, and retail business unit people. To explore how we can tackle the aforementioned challenges, this work applied the data-enabled design method and participatory data analysis to a case study, where 400 student consumers' shopping behavior data was collected, cross-analyzed, and visualized in a campus chain store. We then invited 13 stakeholders to join a co-creation workshop for a further participatory data analysis. In the workshop, the different stakeholders came to a design consensuses which we summarized into a series of practical design recommendations for improving the current store. Finally, we generalized the case study process as a contextual-informed-aware model, which can contribute to professional design practice for the retail industry.

This summary refers to a full research article. The article presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that aims to characterize the use of conversational agents (CHATBOTS) in the current scenario of Educational Recommendation systems (ERS).The objective of this work is to improve the quality of teaching by using chatbots and ERS as valuable tools for teaching, in order to personalize the student learning experience and provide relevant recommendations based on their behavior and learning history, making it more engaging, personalized, and efficient. Following the SLR protocol proposed by Kitchenham, the string and connector chain ('recommendation' OR 'recommender') AND ('chatbot' OR 'chatbots' OR 'chaterbots') was planned and used in the search fields of 4 highly relevant academic data repositories in the computing area: Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Scopus, Association for computing Machinery (acm), and Science Direct, covering the period from 2018 to 2023, selecting 1,401 published articles, of which, after applying inclusion criteria, 158 were analyzed in the final phase of the review. As main results, we can highlight: Personalization of learning: with the help of chatbots, ERS can analyze student data, such as academic history, test results, and learning preferences, to provide personalized recommendations for educational content, maximizing student learning;Accessibility: Chatbots help make education more accessible to students, as they are available without interruption, which means that students can get help whenever they need it, regardless of the time or location;Engagement: Chatbots help with educational content by providing personalized recommendations for content that is relevant and interesting, keeping students engaged and motivated. Transformers have recently revolutionized the machine learning (ML) landscape, gradually making their way into everyday tasks and equipping our computers with "sparks of intelligence". However, their runtime requirements have prevented them from being broadly deployed on mobile. As personal devices become increasingly powerful at the consumer edge and prompt privacy becomes an ever more pressing issue, we explore the current state of mobile execution of Large Language Models (LLMs). To achieve this, we have created our own automation infrastructure, MELT, which supports the headless execution and benchmarking of LLMs on device, supporting different models, devices and frameworks, including Android, iOS and Nvidia Jetson devices. We evaluate popular instruction fine-tuned LLMs and leverage different frameworks to measure their end-to-end and granular performance, tracing their memory and energy requirements along the *** analysis is the first systematic study of on-device LLM execution, quantifying performance, energy efficiency and accuracy across various state-of-the-art models and showcases the state of on-device intelligence in the era of hyperscale models. Results highlight the performance heterogeneity across targets and corroborates that LLM inference is largely memory-bound. Quantization drastically reduces memory requirements and renders execution viable, but at a non-negligible accuracy cost. Drawing from its energy footprint and thermal behavior, the continuous execution of LLMs remains elusive, as both factors negatively affect user experience. Last, our experience shows that the ecosystem is still in its infancy, and algorithmic as well as hardware break-throughs can significantly shift the execution cost. PEAL: Probabilistic Error analysis Methodology for Low-power Approximate Adders

Approximate computing has emerged as an efficient design approach for applications with inherent error resilience. Low-power approximate adders (LPAAs), for instance, IMPACT and InXA, are being advocated as building blocks for approximate computing hardware. For their practical adoption, the error caused by these units needs to be pre-evaluated and compared with maximum allowable error bounds for an application. To address this problem, we present PEAL, a Probabilistic error analysis methodology for Low-power Approximate Single and Multi-layered Adder Architectures, while considering variable probabilities for each bit of input operands for a given multi-bit adder design. PEAL is highly generic, linearly scalable, and applicable to any adder type. The analysis provides probability of success, which is accurate for single-layered adder architectures and provides a lower bound for multi-layered architectures. We have shown that state-of-the-art LPAAs can serve as effective building blocks of approximate computing only when the input probabilities are either very high (>0.8) or very low (<0.2). Interestingly, none of the state-of-the-art LPAA units, which to the best of our knowledge are the most widely adopted, has demonstrated effectiveness for mid-range probabilities (0.3-0.7). We have also analytically explained the cause of this usability limitation and proposed its solution. Moreover, we have proposed a method for estimating the Mean-squared Error of datapaths composed of LPAAs, to quantify the magnitude of error introduced in the output due to approximation of the adder units.

Traditional software development relied heavily on manual coding handled solely by human programmers, assisted by smart editors and IDEs. With the rise of Gen AI, much of the coding and debugging process has been automated, significantly improving productivity. For instance, Amazon reported saving 4,500 man-years and 260 million using its AI tool in 2024. This shift raises questions for computing education: What skills should students learn if coding can be automated?The study explores the gaps between current teaching practices and industry expectations, involving (n=26) teachers and (n=19) industry practitioners in the Philippines through a mixed-methods survey. Findings highlight the need for students to develop both foundational computing skills and AI-related competencies, such as prompt engineering and integrating AI tools into development workflows.

Broadcast and Consensus are most fundamental tasks in distributed computing. These tasks are particularly challenging in dynamic networks where communication across the network links may be unreliable, e.g., due to mobility or failures. Over the last years, researchers have derived several impossibility results and high time complexity lower bounds for these tasks. Specifically for the setting where in each round of communication the adversary is allowed to choose one rooted tree along which the information is disseminated, there is a lower as well as an upper bound that is linear in the number n of nodes for Broadcast and for n ≥ 3 the adversary can guarantee that Consensus never happens. This setting is called the oblivious message adversary for rooted trees. Also note that if the adversary is allowed to choose a graph that does not contain a rooted tree, then it can guarantee that Broadcast and Consensus will never happen. However, such deterministic adversarial models may be overly pessimistic, as many processes in real-world settings are stochastic in nature rather than worst-case. This paper studies Broadcast on stochastic dynamic networks and shows that the situation is very different to the deterministic case. In particular, we show that if information dissemination occurs along random rooted trees and directed Erdős–Rényi graphs, Broadcast completes in O(log n) rounds of communication with high probability. The fundamental insight in our analysis is that key variables are mutually independent. We then study two adversarial models, (a) one with Byzantine nodes and (b) one where an adversary controls the edges. (a) Our techniques without Byzantine nodes are general enough so that they can be extended to Byzantine nodes. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) allows sharing encryption keys with information theoretic security. Satellite-based QKD can establish long distance links due to the quadratic transmission loss in free-space instead of the exponential transmission loss in optical fibers. Atmospheric background light plays an important role in the QKD scheme as it may significantly contribute to the system Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER). Therefore, background light needs to be examined closely. Due to the high variability of atmospheric conditions, direct measurements of the background light under different meteorological conditions are the best option to properly characterize the effect. Current considerations are mainly limited to the analysis of cloud-free scenarios by simulation and by experiment. Links can also take place when the environment differs from this ideal condition. measurement data was recorded in C-band at the campus of the University of Waterloo, Canada, during the day with clear sky and during sunset with clear sky and partly-clouded sky conditions. The measurement data is shown and compared to simulation results and to the measurement data taken in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. The impact of background light is discussed on a chosen reference scenario outlining the importance of detector gating time and end-to-end transmission loss when wanting to realize daylight QKD. © 2024 SPIE.

Modern, large-scale scientific computing runs on complex exascale storage systems that support even more complex data workloads. Understanding the data access and movement patterns is vital for informing the design of future iterations of existing systems and next-generation systems. Yet we are lacking in publicly available traces and tools to help us understand even one system in depth, let alone correlate long-term cross-system trends. In this work, we investigate the workload characteristics of the CERN EOS filesystem, analyzing over 2.49 billion events containing over 300 PB in reads and 150 PB in writes across 11 months. We contrast our finding with analyses from other scientific storage systems, allowing us to observe larger trends that appear over the years and revisit and question conventional wisdom such as "write once, read maybe" and the influence of user actions on system-wide data movement. By studying trace capture mechanisms across these systems, we motivate a standardized trace collection and analysis toolset, so that future researchers can more easily study existing systems to aid in system design.

Cloud-based game streaming has emerged as a viable way to play games anywhere with a good network connection. While previous research has studied the network turbulence of game streaming traffic, there is as of yet no work exploring how cloud-based game streaming responds to rival connections on a congested network. This paper presents experiments measuring and comparing the network response for three popular commercial streaming services - Google Stadia, NVidia GeForce Now, and Amazon Luna - competing with TCP flows on a congested network. analysis of the bitrates, loss and latency show that the three systems have different adaptations to network congestion and vary in their fairness to competing TCP flows sharing a bottleneck link.
