This short paper introduces Energy in Schools, an interactive platform designed to improve energy efficiency in UK schools through a combination of environmental measurement and behavioural change. Uniquely, Energy in Schools is designed to empower all the stakeholders within a school, including children, teachers and leadership groups to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions. The paper reports on the motivation and design of the platform, a discussion on how interactive materials and educational activities were developed to raise awareness and understanding of energy and the climate emergency, how children led activities were used to instrument and analyses energy use via child friendly Internet of Things technologies. Finally, an analysis of its success in encouraging behavioural change through the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of a live deployment across 20 schools is presented. Overall, it was observed that encouraging multiple stakeholders to work together interactively can decrease energy consumption in the majority of schools by over 5%.

We consider the problem of controlling a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) system over a finite horizon T with fixed and known cost matrices Q,R, but unknown and non-stationary dynamics At, Bt. The sequence of dynamics matrices can be arbitrary, but with a total variation, VT, assumed to be o(T) and unknown to the controller. Under the assumption that a sequence of stabilizing, but potentially sub-optimal controllers is available for all t, we present an algorithm that achieves the optimal dynamic regret of Õ(VT2/5 T3/5). With piecewise constant dynamics, our algorithm achieves the optimal regret of Õ(g ST) where S is the number of switches. The crux of our algorithm is an adaptive non-stationarity detection strategy, which builds on an approach recently developed for contextual Multi-armed Bandit problems. We also argue that non-adaptive forgetting (e.g., restarting or using sliding window learning with a static window size) may not be regret optimal for the LQR problem, even when the window size is optimally tuned with the knowledge of VT. The main technical challenge in the analysis of our algorithm is to prove that the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator has a small bias when the parameter to be estimated is non-stationary. Our analysis also highlights that the key motif driving the regret is that the LQR problem is in spirit a bandit problem with linear feedback and locally quadratic cost. This motif is more universal than the LQR problem itself, and therefore we believe our results should find wider application. © 2022 Owner/Author.

Various approaches to testing the ENL learners in educational contexts have tended to experience some limitations concerning validity, reliability, practicality, and sustainability. These limitations can be well mitigated by NLP techniques especially in areas where automated assessment can be made and personalized feedback given to learners. This particular work will contribute to the improvement of methods for teaching and testing in the sphere of English language by employing narrow components of NLP to create the base for the automated assessment that matches the need of a learner or academical curriculum and offers accurate and comprehensive feedback. In contrast with more conventional forms of assessment that involve paper grading or multiple choice tests the proposed approach leverages NLP to 'interpret' the student texts for the purposes of assessment thus encompassing multiple aspects of languages than can simply be graded out of out 100. The type of data used in the present study includes datasets like the Twitter Sentiment analysis Dataset;this is a dataset that comprises labeled tweets that are used to train and test NLP models. An ideal approach, like BERT-CNN is used for feature extraction, preprocessing and training/validation to achieve higher levels of student outputs analysis. K-fold validation and parameter tuning strategies are used for effectiveness and overfitting avoidance of the proposed approaches. The proposed NLP-based assessment system will have a test accuracy of 0.99, and it will prove to be more accurate, efficient and scalable than traditional systems. The system shows its ability to fairly assess the language skills of the learners and offer the feedback to them;therefore, it underpins the potential for introducing changes in the language assessment in learning institutions. Most data generated by modern applications is stored in the cloud, and there is an exponential growth in the volume of jobs to access these data and perform computations using them. The volume of data access or computing jobs can be heterogeneous across different job types and can unpredictably change over time. Cloud service providers cope with this demand heterogeneity and unpredictability by over-provisioning the number of servers hosting each job type. In this paper, we propose the addition of erasure-coded servers that can flexibly serve multiple job types without additional storage cost. We analyze the service capacity region and the response time of such erasure-coded systems and compare them with standard uncoded replication-based systems currently used in the cloud. We show that coding expands the service capacity region, thus enabling the system to handle variability in demand for different data types. Moreover, we characterize the response time of the coded system in various arrival rate regimes. This analysis reveals that adding even a small number of coded servers can significantly reduce the mean response time, with a drastic reduction in regimes where the demand is skewed across different job types.

Many parallel real-time applications can be modeled as DAG tasks. Guaranteeing timing constraints of such applications executed on multicore systems is challenging, especially for the applications with non-preemptive execution blocks. The existing approach for timing analysis of such tasks with sporadic release relies on computing a bound on the interfering workload on a task, which depends on the number of priority inversions the task may experience. The number of priority inversions, in turn, is a function of the total number of additional cores a task instance may request after each node spawning. In this paper, we show that the previously proposed polynomial-time algorithm to compute the maximum number of additional core requests of a DAG is not correct, providing a counter example. We show that the problem is in fact NP-hard. We then present an ILP formulation as an exact solution to the problem. Our evaluations show that the problem can be solved in a few minutes even for DAGs with hundreds of nodes.

Urban accessibility assessments are challenging: they involve varied stakeholders across decision-making contexts while serving a diverse population of people with disabilities. To better support urban accessibility assessment using data visualizations, we conducted a three-part interview study with 25 participants across five stakeholder groups using map visualization probes. We present a multi-stakeholder analysis of visualization needs and sensemaking processes to explore how interactive visualizations can support stakeholder decision making. In particular, we elaborate how stakeholders' varying levels of familiarity with accessibility, geospatial analysis, and specific geographic locations influences their sensemaking needs. We then contribute 10 design considerations for geovisual analytic tools for urban accessibility communication, planning, policymaking, and advocacy.

Elderly and remote patients who cannot visit hospitals frequently require ambulatory ECG monitoring systems. The system connects patients to doctors through her IoT cloud servers, which provide all the information needed to diagnose heart disease. Patients collect data about their current health status and upload it to a server using an ECG monitor and the Message Queue telemetry transport protocol. An IoT cloud server performs further analysis. This is beneficial for both patient and physician. The proposed system also includes a warning mechanism to notify the user when a given threshold is reached. PhysioNet ECG ID Benchmark data and data collected by ECG devices, real-time data and monitoring systems. Inputs, embedded devices, IoT cloud servers, and interfaces form the system structure. In this article, he conducts two experiments using both forms of input data. The results demonstrate that the proposed system can provide reliable and reliable results and reduce the number of hospital visits required. A comparison is made between the proposed system and many methods previously mentioned in the literature. The intended system is finally running and shows how it works. © 2023 IEEE.

CO2 concentration data with high resolution in large venues is highly required during indoor sport events for in-time environment adjustment to guarantee the athlete performances and audience experience. However, the limited battery energy of the wireless sensors cannot support high data resolution and long time coverage simultaneously. Besides, there also lacks effective embedded methods to clean anomaly data caused by the human and environmental factors probably occurring in large venues. Thus, in this paper, we propose C-RIDGE, a low-power sensing system for high resolution CO2 data collection in large venues. Based on prior knowledge, firstly, an adaptive sampling rate adjustment policy is developed for lower energy consumption to extend the time coverage of data. Secondly, CO2 physical property (CPP) aided data cleaning algorithm is designed to improve data quality as well, using Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) and standard deviation with sliding windows. C-RIDGE has been deployed in one venue during a world-class event. The experiments and collected data have shown the system power consumption can be reduced by 36.1%, with measurement error less than 10.2%. The outliers and anomaly trends can also be detected and calibrated effectively via CPP algorithm. The dataset is available at https://***/10.5281/zenodo.7160830.

Intelligent systems might beneft from automatically detecting when a stimulus has triggered a user's recollection of personal memories, e.g., to identify that a piece of media content holds personal signifcance for them. While computational research has demonstrated the potential to identify related states based on facial behavior (e.g., mind-wandering), the automatic detection of spontaneous recollections specifcally has not been investigated this far. Motivated by this, we present machine learning experiments exploring the feasibility of detecting whether a video clip has triggered personal memories in a viewer based on the analysis of their Head Rotation, Head Position, Eye Gaze, and Facial Expressions. Concretely, we introduce an approach for automatic detection and evaluate its potential for (1) person-independent and (2) video-independent predictions using in-the-wild webcam recordings. Overall, our fndings demonstrate the capacity for above chance detections in both settings, with substantially better performance for the video-independent variant. Beyond this, we investigate the role of personspecifc recollection biases for predictions of our video-independent models and the importance of specifc modalities of facial behavior. Finally, we discuss the implications of our fndings for detecting recollections and user-modeling in adaptive systems.
