This paper presents a systematic review of online health communities (OHCs) published between 2009 and 2020 in the acm Digital Library. Aiming to consolidate the current issues, design knowledge, challenges, and tensions in OHCs, our analysis identified four high-level aspects related to the use and design of OHCs: (1) temporal: OHCs as transition spaces, (2) spatial: bridging experiential knowledge with medical expertise, (3) technological: exchanging and locating peer support, and (4) tension dimensions in OHCs. We further discuss methodological improvements and computing opportunities for OHC research and how to increase OHC members' agency in such a medically dominated context. These findings have the potential to inform future OHC designs and help researchers and designers position future contributions.

Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have become a key technology for accelerating node performance in supercomputers, including the US Department of Energy's forthcoming exascale systems. Since the execution model for GPUs differs from that for conventional processors, applications need to be rewritten to exploit GPU parallelism. Performance tools are needed for such GPU-accelerated systems to help developers assess how well applications offload computation onto GPUs. In this paper, we describe extensions to Rice University's HPCToolkit performance tools that support measurement and analysis of Intel's DPC++ programming model for GPU-accelerated systems atop an implementation of the industry-standard OpenCL framework for heterogeneous parallelism on Intel GPUs. HPCToolkit supports three techniques for performance analysis of programs atop OpenCL on Intel GPUs. First, HPCToolkit supports profiling and tracing of OpenCL kernels. Second, HPCToolkit supports CPU-GPU blame shifting for OpenCL kernel executions-a profiling technique that can identify code that executes on one or more CPUs while GPUs are idle. Third, HPCToolkit supports fine-grained measurement, analysis, and attribution of performance metrics to OpenCL GPU kernels, including instruction counts, execution latency, and SIMD waste. The paper describes these capabilities and then illustrates their application in case studies with two applications that offload computations onto Intel GPUs.

Scalar wave propagation analysis is one of the fundamental types of analysis used in many fields and has been the subject of much research. As measurement data accumulates, the need for faster and more accurate analysis using more detailed models has arisen. This paper proposes tetrahedral and voxel finite elements based on orthogonal discontinuous functions that enable fast and accurate analysis. Through accuracy and cost analysis on recent computers with actual implementations, we show that the cost of analysis can be significantly reduced and that faster and more accurate wave analysis can be expected as shown in the application example. In addition, many problems lead to operations with a large number of relatively small matrix-vector products like the problem in this paper. This paper showed that such computation can be handled efficiently by implementations taking advantage of recent computers, and is expected to provide insight for problems with similar operations.

Today, in-situ analyzing and monitoring are imperative for ensuring successful and healthy industrial processes in confined environments. With the rapid development of digitization, augmented reality (AR) has been utilized for letting people immersively interact with the necessary information. However, there are still knowledge gaps between AR technique and domain users pertaining to effective analysis of complex data. Hence, new solutions empowering domain users would benefit the whole industry. In this study, we report an initial prototype supporting complex data visualization and analysis in entire 3D surroundings within industrial process tomography (IPT). Microsoft HoloLens 2 is equipped for users to interact with the 3D information characterizing the workflow of the industrial process with high immersion. Our work distinctly improves the performance compared to existing solutions, pointing the way towards how AR should be deployed and developed more efficiently for aiding IPT systems.

Using parallel file systems efficiently is a tricky problem due to inter-dependencies among multiple layers of I/O software, including high-level I/O libraries (HDF5, netCDF, etc.), MPI-IO, POSIX, and file systems (GPFS, Lustre, etc.). Profiling tools such as Darshan collect traces to help understand the I/O performance behavior. However, there are significant gaps in analyzing the collected traces and then applying tuning options offered by various layers of I/O software. Seeking to connect the dots between I/O bottleneck detection and tuning, we propose DXT Explorer, an interactive log analysis tool. In this paper, we present a case study using our interactive log analysis tool to identify and apply various I/O optimizations. We report an evaluation of performance improvement achieved for four I/O kernels extracted from science applications.
