The services are generally used in distributed computing platforms called "Grid Services" that combines the Grid technology with the web service concept. In the Grid computing environment, several services are crucial. When these services fail, the computing can be terminated. The service reliability is a requirement of the system. Thus, we proposed to a prototype of reliable service model based on resiliency replication that uses forward recovery concepts. We study on the model's performance and its reliability and constructed an experiment to prove our analysis with the measured value. The results presented that the model predicted the performance very close from the actual value.

A process of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) involving large amounts of data requires a considerable amount of computational power. The process may be done on a dedicated and expensive machinery or, for some tasks, one can use distributed computing techniques on a network of affordable machines. In either approach it is usual the user to specify the workflow of the sub-tasks composing the whole KDD process before execution starts. In this paper we propose a technique that we call distributed Generative Data Mining. The generative feature of the technique is due to its capability of generating new sub-tasks of the Data Mining analysis process at execution time. The workflow of sub-tasks of the DM is, therefore, dynamic. To deploy the proposed technique we extended the distributed Data Mining system HARVARD and adapted an Inductive Logic Programming system (IndLog) used in a Relational Data Ming task. As a proof-of-concept, the extended system was used to analyse an artificial dataset of a credit scoring problem with eighty million records.

Non-destructive monitoring of structures may be achieved by system identification to evaluate key parameters. Unfortunately many system identification methods that work for small systems do not necessarily give convergence for large systems. In recent years, the use of genetic algorithms (GA) has shown promising potential for parameter identification of complex systems owing to its many inherent advantages. For large systems involving many degrees of freedom and unknown parameters, the computational effort required by the GA approach may still be prohibitive. The main bulk, of computational time lies in the numerous forward analyses that need to be carried out. With rapid advances in computer hardware, especially networking technology, nevertheless, the feasibility of applying the GA approach to large system identification problems has become closer to reality even by using low-cost personal computers. distributed computing can be easily employed to expedite the GA search, thanks to the high concurrency of the GA approach. In this study, a parallel version of a hybrid algorithm of GA and local search is developed for distributed computing. The implementation involves a manager computer running the main algorithm, which distributes data files to many worker computers connected on the network. Each worker computer carries out the forward analysis with the assigned parameter set and, when completed, sends the output file to the manager computer, Numerical examples are presented to show that this approach is generally workable and robust.

The use of clusters of computers as an environment for high performance computing has been shown to be promising. However, the efficient use of such systems still requires advances that make the application development process be simpler and more productive. The development of cluster monitoring tools is essential to achieve this advances. In this paper we present (PMP)-P-2, a tool for use in clusters of personal computers that provides a graphic visualization of the temporal execution of distributed applications that use the MPI standard for message passing. The tool uses an approach involving the parallel port to read the time of events that occur in all different machines of a cluster. It also simulates the execution of task precedence graphs and allocates tasks of a graph to the machines of a cluster, among other functionalities.

Cluster computing, Cloud computing and GPU computing play overlapping and complementary roles in parallel processing of geospatial data within the general HPC framework. The fast increasing hardware capacities of modern personal computers equipped with chip multiprocessor CPUs and massively parallel GPUs have made high performance computing of large-scale geospatial data in a personal computing environment possible. We discuss the framework of Personal HPC-G and compare it with traditional Cluster computing and the newly emerging Cloud computing. We consider Personal HPC-G possesses many favorable features: low initial and operational costs, good support for data management and excellent support for both numeric modeling and interactive visualization. A case study on developing a parallel spatial statistics module for visual explorations on top of Personal HPC-G is subsequently presented. Copyright 2010 ACM.

Tidset-based parallel FP-tree algorithm for the frequent pattern mining problem on PC clusters

Mining association rules from a transaction-oriented database is a problem in data mining. Frequent patterns are essential for generating association rules, time series analysis, classification, etc. There are two categories of algorithms for data mining, the generate-and-test approach (Apriori-like) and the pattern growth approach (FP-tree). Recently, many methods have been proposed for solving this problem based on an FP-tree as a replacement for Apriori-like algorithms, because these need to scan the database many times. However, even for the pattern growth method, the execution time takes long when the database is large or the given support is low. parallel-distributed computing is good strategy for solving this problem. Some parallel algorithms have been proposed, however, the execution time increases rapidly when the database increases or when the given minimum threshold is small. In this study, an efficient parallel-distributed mining algorithm based on an FP-tree structure - the Tidset-based parallel FP-tree (TPFP-tree) - is proposed. In order to exchange transactions efficiently, transaction identification set (Tidset) was used to directly choose transactions without scanning databases. The algorithm was verified on a Linux cluster with 16 computing nodes. It was also compared with a PFP-tree algorithm. The dataset generated by IBM's Quest Synthetic Data Generator to verify the performance of algorithms was used. The experimental results showed that this algorithm can reduce the execution time when the database grows. Moreover, it was also observed that this algorithm had better scalability than the PFP-tree.

Rapid advances In network and computer technologies are making networked computers, organized in the form of Grid, an appealing vehicle for cost-effective parallel computing. But how to handle efficiently the communications in scheduling is still a main obstacle to using these resources. In this paper, we tackle this problem by partitioning resources into groups in a parallel and distributed fashion. Resources with good communication performance to each other will be clustered into a same group. Based on our observation that communication latencies between adjacent resources are much less than those between non-adjacent ones with high possibility, flooding with a small TTL (Time-To-Live) can inherently exploit the proximity property between resources, which improves greatly the efficiency of our partitioning work. Our distributed resource management method can fit well for environments with large-scale resources such as Grid. © 2005 IEEE.

Recently, GPU has been widely used in High Performance computing (HPC). In order to improve computational performance, several GPUs are integrated into one computer node in practical system. However, power consumption of GPUs is very high and becomes as bottleneck to its further development. In doing so, optimizing power consumption have been draw broad attention in the research area and industry community. In this paper, we present an energy optimization model considering performance constraint for homogeneous multi-GPUs, and propose a performance prediction model when task partitioning policy is specified. Experiment results validate that the model can accurately predict the execution of program for single or multiple GPUs, and thus reduce static power consumption by the guide of task partition.

MPI is a de facto standard for high performance numerical applications on parallel machines: it is available, in a variety of implementations, for a range of architectures, ranging from supercomputers to clusters of workstations. Nonetheless, with the growing demand for distributed, heterogeneous and Grid computing, developers are hitting some of its limitations: e.g. security is not addressed, and geographically distributed machines are difficult to connect. In this work, we give an example of a parallel application, implemented with the use of Web Services. Web Services represent an emerging standard to offer computational services over the Internet. While this solution does not reach the same performance of MPI, it offers a series of advantages: high availability, rapid design, extreme heterogeneity.
