The integration of accelerators into cluster systems is currently one of the architectural trends in high performance computing. Usually, those accelerators are manycore compute devices which are directly connected to individual cluster nodes via PCI Express. Recent advances of accelerators, however, do not require a host CPU anymore and now even enable their integration as self-contained nodes that are able to MPI-communicate over their own network interface. This approach offers new opportunities for application developers, as compute kernels can now span multiple communicating accelerators to better account for larger MPI-based code regions with the potential for massive node-level parallelism. However, it also raises the question of how to program such an environment. An instance of this novel cluster architecture is the DEEP cluster system currently under development. Based on this hardware concept, we investigate the MPI_Comm_spawn process creation mechanism for offloading MPI-based distributed memory compute kernels onto multiple network-attached accelerators. We identify limitations of MPI_Comm_spawn and present an offloading mechanism which results in only a fraction of the overhead of a pure MPI_Comm_spawn solution.

With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed resources. Such application scenarios require means for composing and executing complex workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of workflow management systems for Grid computing. In this paper, we propose a QoS-based workflow management system and scheduling algorithm that find the best match between workflow applications and resources while meeting QoS requests. The infrastructure is based on the event condition action (ECA) rules in active database. In none of reported works, the ECA rules haven't been used so far. We also attempt to solve the fault tolerance problem by duplicating delayed tasks using proper rules. Some rules are used for QoS monitoring. We implement the ECA rules in Grid-JQA [1, 2] in order to show that using the rules in the grid environment have better performance. The results of a simulation are provided to evaluate the main idea of the paper.

This paper provides an overview of each of the layers contained in the SPEEDES architecture. SPEEDES is a simulation framework that promotes interoperability, portability, efficiency, flexibility, and maintainability for High Performance computing applications. Specifically, SPEEDES targets parallel and distributed platforms via its advanced time management schemes and shared memory communications structures. SPEEDES currently supports a large user base centered in the DOD simulation community. This paper describes several of the layers and features of the SPEEDES Simulation Framework. In addition, this paper discusses some of the most recent advances to the SPEEDES framework including its Federation Object (FO) System and its support for HLA via the SPEEDES-HLA Gateway.

Developments in Computational Quantum Chemistry have been driven by the developments in hardware and software technology. Quantum chemical applications use 30-40% of the computational resources available in National and Regional supercomputer centers, therefore, it is important to discuss in the SUPERcomputing'92 forum how new technological developments in parallel and distributed computing, will affect the computational methodologies used in Quantum Chemistry. This panel will focus on "ab initio" types of quantum chemical calculations. "Traditional" quantum chemical applications have been built around external files containing the so called "two electron integrals". These integrals are computed once and then stored in auxiliary storage devices. Thereafter they are used multiple times during the calculations and well developed methods exist to make efficient use of hardware and software using this approach. In recent years CPU technology has advanced much faster than storage technology, therefore new methods ("direct" methods) in which the two electron integrals are calculated when needed, "on the fly", have been introduced. Of course this is a trade off of I/O for CPU;these same integrals may be needed and calculated many times. While these techniques are not yet as well developed as their predecessors, big advances have been made in recent years. The use of "traditional" vs "direct" techniques is very much dictated by the trade off governed by the cost, availability, and performance of different computer technologies, mainly CPU and auxiliary storage. This panel will discuss this trade off in view of recent computational advances such as parallel/distributed computing (hardware and software technology) and new storage technologies (for example new disk array technologies). © 1992 IEEE.

In this paper, a parallel algorithm for solving tridiagonal equations based on recurrence is presented. Compared with the parallel prefix method (PP) which is also based on the recursive method, the computation cost is reduced by a factor of two while maintaining the same communication cost. The method can be viewed as a modified prefix method or prefix with substructuring. The complexity of the algorithm is analysed using the BSP model (Bulk Synchronous parallel). Experimental results are obtained on a Sun workstation using the Oxford BSP Library.
