With the significant advances in online social networks which provide precious knowledge for personalized recommendation, it is necessary to design effective and efficient method to deal with such data. In this paper, we focus on the recommendation system to integrate the preference information and trust relations among users, following the trust-based recommendation model (TbRM) [1] which considers both the user's reputation and his/her nearest neighbors in the social network. Our main contribution is to present a fast algorithm to solve TbRM model with the aid of graph vertex programming (GVP) in parallel. The idea is to represent the preference and trust information as a graph with both user and item vertices, and its edges contain the preference and trust information. In this case, the recommendation problem becomes a graph analysis procedure which iteratively updates the vertices' states in parallel with the aid of predefined vertex state function and edge information. A series of experiments on four real-world recommendation datasets (Ciao, Epinions, Douban and Flixster) have shown that the graph parallel operations obviously speed up the recommendation procedure, e.g., GVP performs 1.1-2.3× faster than the existing popular distributed stochastic gradient descent algorithm with different number of cores. © 2016 IEEE.

The C* language is a data-parallel extension of the C language which incorporates parallel data types. Since the C++ language provides operator overloading, a C++ library can implement the C* parallel extensions with a similar syntax. Although library implementations are highly portable, some overheads make them impractical. The two major overheads incurred are temporaries in each operator application and the inability to detect regular communication patterns. The C++ overloading mechanism forces a temporary for each operator application. Also, regular communications in C* are syntactically indistinguishable from general point-to-point communications. We tackled these problems extensively in a library. The template mechanism, a type parameterization in C++, is used to eliminate temporaries by delaying operator application and evaluating the entire expression at once. The polymorphic type dispatch mechanism is used to detect regular communications by assigning particular types to potentially regular communications. We have implemented the library on the CM-5, and compared its performance with the C* compiler using three simple examples. The techniques presented offers improved performance comparable to the C* compiler, which is close or 1.5 times slower in two examples, and even faster in one example.

OWL and RDF/RDFS are ontological languages developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which have become a de facto standard for the ontological descriptions in various domains. The evolution of these standards was influenced by the numerous advances in the research of knowledge representation and reasoning. Although support for reasoning and standardized representation is the key benefit of these technologies, there is a lack of existing test frameworks, which would be capable of addressing many crucial aspects of the Semantic Web applications. In this paper we propose a methodology for automated testing of OWL reasoners based on the real-world ontologies. This specification covers both terminological and assertional reasoning as well as checking of the correctness of the answers. An opensource implementation of such framework is described and a study of initial results is provided. The tests cover an extensive set of reasoners and ontologies and provide a state-of-the-art insight into the field of OWL reasoning. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper proposes an efficient parallel approach to texture classification for image retrieval. The idea behind this method is to pre-extract texture features in terms of texture energy measurement associated with a 'tuned' mask and store them in a multi-scale and multi-orientation texture class database via a two-dimensional linked list for query. Thus each texture class sample in the database can be traced by its texture energy in a two-dimensional row sorted matrix. The parallel searching strategies are introduced for fast identifying the entities closest to the input texture throughout the given texture energy matrix. In contrast to the traditional search methods, our approach incorporates different computation patterns for different cases of available processor numbers and concerns with robust and work-optimal parallel algorithms for row-search and minimum-find based an the accelerated cascading technique and the dynamic processor allocation scheme. Applications of the proposed parallel search and multisearch algorithms to both single image classification and multiple image classification are discussed. The time complexity analysis shows that our proposal will speed up the classification tasks in a simple but dynamic manner. Examples are presented of the texture classification task applied to image retrieval of Brodatz textures, comprising various orientations and scales.

A single system image is the illusion that a collection of otherwise independent computing engines is a single computational resource. But any single system image has a boundary: Within it one perceives unity; outside it there is multiplicity. So many single system images can co-exist in one system. The types of single systems images can be arranged in a hierarchy, ranging from application-level through operating system to hardware. An eight-level hierarchy of single system images is presented and described.

Summary form only given. This article gives a brief overview of theoretical advances, computing trends, applications and future perspectives in parallel genetic algorithms. It explains basic terms and behavior of (parallel) genetic algorithms. Genetic algorithms are easily parallelized algorithms, therefore two kinds of possible parallelism, data parallelism and control parallelism, are mentioned and described towards them. parallelism of genetic algorithms brings many advantages and gains. Classifications of these algorithms are often based on the type of computing model, a walk strategy and the used computing machinery. Afterwards significant milestones in the theory with latest advances are briefly mentioned. Then current trends in parallel computing with stress computer architectures of parallel systems, interconnection topologies, operating systems, parallel (genetic) libraries and programming paradigms are reviewed shortly. The sufficient space is devoted to the latest applications of parallel genetic algorithms. After the discussion section, perspectives of the algorithms are predicted till the year 2005. The information in the article is segregated into two periods before and after the year 2000 in all chapters. The second period is more interesting and of higher importance, because it highlights recent research efforts and gives some hints about possible future trends. That is why we devote much space to the second period. As there is no such an overview of the recent period of parallel genetic algorithms, our investigation could be appealing and useful in many aspects.

Remote-sensing data about the Earth's environment is being created at an ever-increasing rate and distributed among heterogeneous remote sites. Traditional models of distributed computing are inadequate to support such complex applications, which generally involve a large quantity of data. We explore an approach based on mobile agent techniques for autonomous data processing and information discovery on the Synthetic Aperture Radar Atlas (SARA) digital library which consists of distributed multi-agency archives of multi-spectral remote-sensing imagery of the Earth. Our goal is to enable automatic and dynamic configuration of distributed parallel computing resources and to efficiently support on-demand processing of such a remote-sensing archive. The design, architecture and implementation of a prototype system that applies this approach is reported.
