Recent advances in high-speed networks, rapid improvements in microprocessor design, and availability of highly performing clustering software implementations enables cost-effective high-performance parallel computing on clustered low cost workstations and PCs. Such clusters are very attractive because they rely on availability of the shelf hardware and software technologies. To simplify programming in network environments and to realise component-based software architectures, many models have emerged as possible standards, namely, RPC: Remote Procedure Call, DCE: distributed computing Environment, DCOM: distributed Component Object Model, CORBA: Common Object Request Broker Architecture, PVM: parallel Virtual Machine and MPI: Message Passing Interface. The MPI approach is considered one of the most mature methods currently used in parallel programming. MPI implementations an emerging cluster interconnects are an important requirement for useful parallel processing on cost-effective computer clusters. This paper offers art overview of different parallel computing environments and models. Functionality and performance of MPI running on homogeneous and heterogeneous workstation clusters are compared. The project goals, laboratory environment, performance measurements, future work, and a conclusion are presented.

We exploited the recent advances in Internet connectivity and Web technologies for building Web-based parallel programming environments (WPPEs) that facilitate the development and execution of parallel programs on remote high-performance computers. A Web browser running on the user's machine provides a user-friendly interface to server-site user accounts and allows the use of parallel computing platforms and software in a convenient manner. The user may create, edit, and execute files through this Web browser interface. This new Web-based client-server architecture has the potential of being used as a future front-end to high-performance computer systems. We discuss the design and implementation of several prototype WPPEs that are currently in use at the Northeast parallel Architectures Center and the Cornell Theory Center. These initial prototypes support high-level parallel programming with Fortran 90 and High Performance Fortran (HPF), as well as explicit low-level programming with Message Passing Interface (MPI). We detail the lessons learned during the development process and outline the tradeoffs of various design choices in the realization of the design. We especially concentrate on providing server-site user accounts, mechanisms to access those accounts through the Web, and the Web-related system security issues.

This paper proposes an overview of different processing paradigms inherent to image and vision processing, and of hardware support for them. It identifies some still open questions in parallel image/vision processing. The paper is organized into four parts. Part one discusses three main problems inherent to image and vision processing: processing flux parallelism, data parallelism and application constraints. Part two makes an overview of the flux (or control) parallelism hardware support for vision processing. Part three discusses the data parallelism concept and the architectural support for it existing in vision and image architectures. The presentation concludes with a discussion of future requirements for processors. Our conviction is that the future microprocessors, because of technology advances, will progressively integrate the structures of today's parallel dedicated computers.

The main goal of this workshop is to provide a timely forum for the exchange and dissemination of new ideas, techniques and research in the field of the new parallel and distributed computational models. The workshop is meant to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in all aspects of parallel and distributed computing taken in an inclusive, rather than exclusive, sense. We are convinced that the workshop atmosphere will be conducive to open and mutually beneficial exchanges of ideas between the participants.

Memory hierarchy-consciousness is an important requirement for the design of high-performance programs. We describe a tool that supports the programmer in restructuring performance-critical code sections. The tool works with small program instances, which are obtained by fixing program parameters such as loop bounds, and rewriting the program as an operation sequence. The tool automatically reorders the operations for better locality, and respects data dependencies. It outputs the optimized program instance in a structured form. The user finally recognizes the locality-relevant structure and generalizes it to the program. The paper focuses an recent advances in the development of our method. In particular we introduce a hierarchical clustering scheme that highlights operation subsequences with much data reuse. The scheme is applied to the generation of structured optimized program instances in which the locality-relevant structure is easy to recognize. Experimental results are included.

The availability of low-cost microprocessors and the advances in communication technologies have promoted a great interest in multicomputer architectures. These systems are characterized by high performance, availability and extensibility at low cost but nowadays lack of good programming tools which could help the programmer to really exploit the resources of the computing system. One of the most significant problems, especially for highly dynamic computations, is how to allocate work to the nodes of the system. We examine the main topics concerning a dynamic load balancer integrated in the ASK run-time kernel which supports parallel actor programming on a transputer network. The balancer implements both a random allocation algorithm and a more complex one called Adaptive Contracting Within Neighbourhood (ACWN). Experimental results concerning the balancer behavior on some sample algorithms are presented and analyzed.< >

The astonishing advances in processing speeds and the phenomenal increase in chip densities have enabled the creation of very powerful microprocessors and computer systems. Future high end computing systems are expected to have teraflops of computing capability and massive amounts of storage. Such computers are expected to be important for discovery in the fundamental sciences, pharmaceuticals, and several other causes for the improvement of mankind. In this paper, we analyze a workload that is expected to be instrumental in designing and architecting future computing systems. The workload is a ground motion tracker indication (GMTI) application created by the scientists at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory. The application is being used to drive the design of several advanced future computer systems; hence it is important to understand the computational, memory access and parallelism features of this application. In this paper, we first describe the various components/stages of this application. Then, we perform detailed analysis of the execution of this application. On the basis of profiling the execution of the application, both on actual platforms and with simulations, we show that the parallelism in the several stages of the application is different. The application is seen to contain a large amount of parallelism that can be exploited by spatially or temporally parallel computer architectures. However, the nonuniformities in computing requirements as well as memory access patterns of the different stages are important considerations in the design of spatially/temporally parallel architectures to handle these applications. The execution of the application on a superscalar processor and a grid processor are analyzed.

advances in high-performance computing have led to the broad use of computational studies in everyday engineering and scientific applications. A single study may require thousands of computational experiments, each corresponding to individual runs of simulation software with different parameter settings; in complex studies, the pattern of parameter changes is complex and may have to be adjusted by the user based on partial simulation results. Unfortunately, existing tools have limited high-level support for managing large ensembles of simultaneous computational experiments. In this paper, we present a system architecture for interactive computational studies targeting two goals. The first is to provide a framework for high-level user interaction with computational studies, rather than individual experiments; the second is to maximize the size of the studies that can be performed at close to interactive rates. We describe a prototype implementation of the system and demonstrate performance improvements obtained using our approach for a simple model problem

We are developing a system for collaborative research and development for a distributed group of researchers at different institutions around the world. In a new paradigm for collaborative computational science, the computer code and supporting infrastructure itself becomes the collaborating instrument, just as an accelerator becomes the collaborating tool for large numbers of distributed researchers in particle physics. The design of this "collaboratory" allows many users, with very different areas of expertise, to work coherently together, on distributed computers around the world. Different supercomputers may be used separately, or for problems exceeding the capacity of any single system, multiple supercomputers may be networked together through high speed gigabit networks. Central to this collaboratory is a new type of community simulation code, called "Cactus". The scientific driving force behind this project is the simulation of Einstein's equations for studying black holes, gravitational waves, and neutron stars, which has brought together researchers in very different fields from many groups around the world to make advances in the study of relativity and astrophysics. But the system is also being developed to provide scientists and engineers, without expert knowledge of parallel or distributed computing, mesh refinement, and so on, with a simple framework for solving any system of partial differential equations on many parallel computer systems, from traditional supercomputers to networks of workstations.
