All-to-all personalized exchange is one of the most dense collective communication patterns and occurs in many important parallel computing/networking applications. In this paper, we look into the issue of realizing all-to-all personalized exchange in optical multistage networks. advances in electro-optic technologies have made optical communication a promising networking choice to meet the increasing demands for high channel bandwidth and low communication latency of high-performance computing/communication applications. Although optical multistage networks hold great promise and have demonstrated advantages over their electronic counterpart, they also hold their own challenges. Due to the unique properties of optics, crosstalk in optical switches should be avoided to make them work properly. In this paper, we will provide an optimal scheme for realizing all-to-all personalized exchange in a class of unique-path, self-routing optical multistage networks crosstalk-free. The basic idea of realizing all-to-all personalized exchange in such a multistage network is to transform it to multiple semi-permutations, each of which can be realized crosstalk-free in a single pass, and take advantage of pipelined message transmission in consecutive passes. As can be seen, the time complexity of our all-to-all personalized exchange algorithms matches the lower bound of the communication delay in this type of network.

We are developing a system for collaborative research and development for a distributed group of researchers at different institutions around the world. In a new paradigm for collaborative computational science, the computer code and supporting infrastructure itself becomes the collaborating instrument, just as an accelerator becomes the collaborating tool for large numbers of distributed researchers in particle physics. The design of this "Collaboratory" allows many users, with very different areas of expertise, to work coherently together, on distributed computers around the world. Different supercomputers may be used separately, or for problems exceeding the capacity of any single system, multiple supercomputers may be networked together through high speed gigabit networks. Central to this Collaboratory is a new type of community simulation code, called "Cactus". The scientific driving force behind this project is the simulation of Einstein's equations for studying black holes, gravitational waves, and neutron stars, which has brought together researchers in very different fields from many groups around the world to make advances in the study of relativity and astrophysics. But the system is also being developed to provide scientists and engineers, without expert knowledge of parallel or distributed computing, mesh refinement, and so on, with a simple framework for solving any system of partial differential equations on many parallel computer systems, from traditional supercomputers to networks of workstations.

Modelling frameworks are constantly being developed and expanded to take advantage of new computing technology. One such framework undergoing expansion is The Invisible Modelling Environment (TIME) (Rahman et al 2003). TIME is a software development framework for creating, testing and delivering environmental simulation models. With increasing demands being placed on computer systems by complex models, a solution was needed to address the problem of ever increasing execution times. A number of options were available to reduce long runtimes in TIME. Considering the options, a Grid computing solution was chosen as the most viable because it could provide the greatest return on investment. A computational grid can be formed by the networking of existing personal computers and the installation of specialist control software. Existing local area and wide area networks can also be utilised as part of a grid with no changes to hardware configuration. The nature of some of the processing being done within the TIME engine lends itself to performance optimisation through grid computing. Tasks to be run on a grid need to be able to be broken down into small sub-problems and each of the sub-problems needs be a computationally intensive operation rather than a data intensive operation. The sub-problems also need to be able to run in parallel rather than in series as is generally the case for applications that run on a single machine. Although a number of grid computing technologies exist, the Alchemi .NET Grid computing Framework was the framework of choice for TIME. Alchemi is an open source software framework that has been specifically designed for the fast and efficient harnessing of the computational power of networked machines. Although only in the early stages of development when first adopted, its flexibility and potential made it the best choice for integration into TIME. The use of clusters of computers as an environment for high performance computing has been shown to be promising. However, the efficient use of such systems still requires advances that make the application development process be simpler and more productive. The development of cluster monitoring tools is essential to achieve this advances. We present PM/sup 2/P, a tool for use in clusters of personal computers that provides a graphic visualization of the temporal execution of distributed applications that use the MPI standard for message passing. The tool uses an approach involving the parallel port to read the time of events that occur in all different machines of a cluster. It also simulates the execution of task precedence graphs and allocates tasks of a graph to the machines of a cluster, among other functionalities.

In parallel and distributed simulations, it is sometimes desirable that the application's time-stamped events and/or the simulator's time-management control messages be exchanged over a combination of reliable and unreliable network channels. A challenge in developing infrastructure for such simulations is to correctly compute simulation time advances despite the loss of some simulation events and/or control messages. Presented here are algorithms for synchronization in distributed simulations performed directly over best-effort network transport. The algorithms are presented in a sequence of progressive refinement, starting with all reliable transport and finishing with combinations of reliable and unreliable transports for both time-stamped events and time management messages. Performance results from a preliminary implementation of these algorithms are also presented. To our knowledge, this is the first work to solve asynchronous time synchronization performed directly over unreliable network transport.

The remarkable advances obtained in prediction and design in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) which requires scalable computing power in terms of speed and memory can currently be sustained with parallel supercomputers. This paper presents cooperative work between ONERA (France) and NAL (Japan) to investigate the potential of distributed environments for high performance computing in CFD. For this purpose a Navier-Stokes flow code was integrated into a distributed processor environment with two parallelization strategies: one based on domain partitioning with message passing; and another one based on loop-parallelization with compiler directives. We present in this paper the results obtained on different computers such as CRAY, PARAGON and NAL NWT supercomputers.

As technological advances are made in software and hardware, the feasibility of accessing information "anytime, anywhere" is becoming a reality. There are similarities involved in accessing information in a multidatabase environment and a mobile computing environment. We have discussed the characteristics of a wireless-mobile computing environment superimposed on a multidatabase system to realize a system capable of effectively accessing a large amount of data over a wireless medium. In order to limit the effects of the restrictions imposed by a mobile environment, data duplication is used at the mobile unit. The duplicated data at the mobile node provide additional availability in case of a weak connection or disconnection. In such an environment, it is important to retain the consistency between the data residing on fixed nodes and mobile nodes. Current research has concentrated on page- and file-based caching or replication schemes to address the availability and consistency issues in a mobile environment. In a mobile multidatabase environment, local autonomy restrictions prevent the use of a page- or file-based data duplication scheme. We propose a new data duplication scheme to address the limited bandwidth and local autonomy restrictions in such an environment. Queries and their associated data are cached at the mobile unit as a complete object. Consistency is maintained by using a parity-based invalidation scheme. Additionally, a simple prefetching scheme is used in conjunction with caching to further improve effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

A high performance, freely accessible medical image processing environment based on a distributed architecture is presented: MedlGrid is the result of a joined interaction between scientists devoted to the design and deployment of new and efficient tomographic reconstruction techniques, researchers in the field of distributed and parallel architectures, and physicians interested in experimenting with new advances in the field of image reconstruction and analysis. The main goal of the project was to design an easily accessible and usable environment with which the medical community can experiment on one side, and that research groups can use as a reference or as a basis for continuing research on the other side. The outcome of this work consists of a prototypal grid infrastructure along with an open and distributed software environment. The grid computing architecture includes a storage server, a high performance parallel computing unit, and two PCs that act as clients to the system and that are located in geographically distant areas. The Globus Toolkit has been chosen to implement the middleware between hardware and software. The latter consists of a set of tools and strategies to reconstruct, display, analyze as well as store, share, distribute and organize medical images, addressing the major problems in the field of image reconstruction and processing. It is platform independent, remotely executable, freely downloadable and accessible, and based on open source code.

Summary form only given. Due to advances in fiber-optics and VLSI technology, interconnection networks which allow multiple simultaneous broadcasts are becoming feasible. This paper summarizes one such multiprocessor architecture called the Simultaneous Optical Multiprocessor Exchange Bus (SOME-Bus). It also presents the design of the network interface and the cache and directory controllers which support cache block combining, capture and prefetch and allow complete overlap of processing time with the communication time due to compulsory misses. The paper uses two fundamental matrix algorithms to characterize the architecture performance. Cache miss analysis and results from the execution of these programs on a SOME-Bus simulator show that block capture and prefetch combined with an effective block replacement policy succeed in significantly reducing the miss rate due to compulsory misses as the cache size increases, while a similar increase of cache size in traditional architectures leaves the miss rate due to compulsory misses unaffected.
