advances in storage and high-speed broadband communication network technologies are making it feasible to design and implement distributed scalable video-on-demand server networks. In this paper a hierarchical structure for a server network is proposed to support a metropolitan TV-Anytime service. A key issue, how to map the media assets onto such a hierarchical server network, is addressed in this paper. The definition and heuristic methods for the solution of this new combinatorial optimization problem are presented. The mapping problem studied here addresses the management of media assets taking the storage capacity, communication bandwidth limitation and access pattern into account. The methods presented in this paper are based on parallel simulated annealing and are verified by the use of a set of benchmark instances. The results show that the methods provide a near to optimal performance in terms of the Quality of Service (QoS).

One of the key components of a multi user multimedia on demand system is the data server. Digitization of traditionally analog data such as video and audio, and the feasibility of obtaining network bandwidths above the gigabit per second range are two important advances that have made possible the realization, in the near future, of interactive distributed multimedia systems. Secondary-to-main memory I/O technology has not kept pace with advances in networking, main memory and CPU processing power. Consequently, the performance of the server has a direct bearing on the overall performance of such a system. We develop a model for the architecture of a server for such a system. parallelism of data retrieval is achieved by striping the data across multiple disks. The performance of any server ultimately depends on the data access patterns. Two modifications of the basic retrieval algorithm are presented to exploit data access patterns in order to improve system throughput and response time. A complementary information caching optimization is discussed. Finally, we present performance results of these algorithms on the IBM SP1 and Intel Paragon parallel computers.

The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) grid application platform provides a grid environment for CFD applications using high performance computing. It adopts service oriented architecture (SOA), is based on IBM's Service Domain, extends and customizes it for CFD applications in several modules, such as service requesting, job scheduling, job management, failure recovery, etc. By defining general CFD application interfaces such as data format, the platform integrates different CFD applications, including mesh generation, domain decomposition and resolvers, to follow the workflow customized by end-users to finish a complete CFD job. Furthermore, CFD application development specifications and packages are provided to facilitate migrating most sequential and parallel CFD applications to the platform. Currently, a prototype system is available online to the public for testing.

Current advances in processor technology, and the rapid development of high speed networking technology, such as ATM, have made high performance network computing an attractive computing environment for large-scale high performance distributed computing (HPDC) applications. However, due to the communications overhead at the host-network interface, most of the HPDC applications are not getting the full benefit of high speed communication networks. This overhead can be attributed to the high cost of operating system calls, context switching, the use of inefficient communication protocols, and the coupling of data and control paths. We present an architecture and implementation for a low-latency, high-throughput message passing tool, that we refer to as the NYNET (ATM wide area network testbed in New York state) Communication System (NCS), which can support a variety of HPDC applications with different Quality of Services (QOS) requirements. NCS uses multithreading to provide efficient techniques that overlap computation and communication. NCS uses read/write trap routines to bypass traditional operating system calls. This reduces latency and avoids using inefficient communication protocols. By separating data and control paths, NCS eliminates unnecessary control transfers. This optimizes the data path and improves performance. Benchmarking results show that the performance of NCS is at least a factor of two better than the performance of corresponding p4 and PVM primitives.

advances in wireless networks enable high rates interaction between mobile devices. Short range wireless communication technologies such as wearable PCs demand low latency and reliability as the first thing for considering QoS. Mobile peer-to-peer devices as an autonomous system of mobile routers that are self-organized, self-configured and completely decentralized are characterized by bounded resource sharing reliability. Due to the uncertainty in available resources wireless networks could rarely host file sharing applications in a reliable manner. This paper examines the response of a gossip-based data replication scheme for reliable file sharing under specified patterns and conditions, using the hybrid mobile infostation system (HyMIS). This scheme is based on the advantages of mobile infostations. Combining the strengths of autonomic gossiping and the hybrid -entirely mobile- infostation concept, this scheme enables end to end reliability. Examination is performed for the response, the robustness and the offered reliability while examining the effectiveness of the proposed scheme for facing mobility limitations using the gossip-based 'selection' of users

Checkpoint and recovery (CPR) systems have many uses in high-performance computing. Because of this, many developers have implemented it, by hand, into their applications. One of the uses of checkpointing is to help mitigate the effects of interruptions in computational service (both planned and unplanned) In fact, some supercomputing centers expect their users to use checkpointing as a matter of policy. And yet, few centers provide fully automatic checkpointing systems for their high-end production machines. The paper is a status report on our work on the family of C 3 systems for (almost) fully automatic checkpointing for scientific applications. To date, we have shown that our techniques can be used for checkpointing sequential, MPI and OpenMP applications written in C, Fortran, and several other languages. A novel aspect of our work is that we have not built a single checkpointing system, rather, we have developed a methodology and a set of techniques that have enabled us to develop a number of systems, each meeting different design goals and efficiency requirements

We study optical multistage interconnection networks (MINs). advances in electro-optic technologies have made optical communication a promising networking choice to meet the increasing demands for high channel bandwidth and low communication latency, of high-performance computing/communication applications. Although optical MINs hold great promise and have demonstrated advantages over their electronic counterpart, they also hold their own challenges. Due to the unique properties of optics, crosstalk in optical switches should be avoided to make them work properly. Most of the research work described in the literature are for electronic MINs, and hence, crosstalk is not considered. We introduce a new concept, semi-permutation, to analyze the permutation capability of optical MINs under the constraint of avoiding crosstalk, and apply it to two examples of optical MINs, banyan network and Benes network. For the blocking banyan network, we show that not all semi-permutations are realizable in one pass, and give the number of realizable semi-permutations. For the rearrangeable Benes network, we show that any semi-permutation is realizable in one pass and any permutation is realizable in two passes under the constraint of avoiding crosstalk. A routing algorithm for realizing a semi-permutation in a Benes network is also presented. With the speed and bandwidth provided by current optical technology, an optical MIN clearly demonstrates a superior overall performance over its electronic MIN counterpart.

In parallel and distributed simulations, it is sometimes desirable that the application's time-stamped events and/or the simulator's time-management control messages be exchanged over a combination of reliable and unreliable network channels. A challenge in developing infrastructure for such simulations is to correctly compute simulation time advances despite the loss of some simulation events and/or control messages. The authors present algorithms for synchronization in distributed simulations, performed directly over best-effort network transport. The algorithms are presented in a sequence of progressive refinement, starting with all reliable transport and finishing with combinations of reliable and unreliable transport for both time-stamped events and time management messages. Performance results from a preliminary implementation of these algorithms are also presented. To our knowledge, this is the first work to solve asynchronous time synchronization performed directly over unreliable network transport.

Recent advances in parallel computing have made it possible for scientists to perform atomistic simulations of materials involving billions of atoms. An immersive and interactive virtual environment such as ImmersaDesk is an ideal platform for exploring complex material processes in these simulations. However rendering such large datasets at an interactive speed is a major challenge. To solve this problem we have developed a visualization system by incorporating parallel and distributed computing paradigms. The system uses a parallelized fast visibility-culling algorithm based on the octree data structure to reduce the number of atoms sent to the graphics pipeline. An adaptive multiresolution algorithm based on atomic density is employed to further reduce the load on the graphics pipeline. The resulting system renders a billion-atom system at nearly interactive frame rates on a dual processor SGI Onyx2 with an InfiniteReality2 graphics pipeline connected to a 4-node PC cluster.

Modern science often requires the processing and analysis of vast amounts of data in search of postulated phenomena, and the validation of core principles through the simulation of complex system behaviors and interactions. This is the case in fields such as astronomy, bioinformatics, physics, and climate and ocean modeling, and others. In order to support the computational and data needs of today's science, new knowledge must be gained on how to deliver the growing high-performance and distributed computing resources to the scientist's desktop in an accessible, reliable and scalable way. In over a decade of working with domain scientists, the Pegasus project [1,2] has developed tools and techniques that automate the computational processes used in data- and compute-intensive research. Among them is the scientific workflow management system, Pegasus, which is being used by researchers to model seismic wave propagation, to discover new celestial objects, to study RNA critical to human brain development, and to investigate other important research *** talk will review the conception and evolution of the Pegasus research program. It will touch upon the role of scientific workflow systems in advancing science, and will give specific examples of how the Pegasus Workflow Management System has done so. It will describe how the Pegasus project has adapted to changes in application needs and to advances in high performance and distributed computing systems. It will discuss the interleaving of Computer Science research and software development and how each benefits from the other while providing value to other science domains. The talk will also stress the importance of forming collaborations, both within Computer Science and with other disciplines, to help solve real-world problems and have fun along way.
