Current advances in high-speed networks and WWW technologies have made network computing a cost-effective, high-performance computing alternative. New software tools are being developed to utilize efficiently the network computing environment. Our project, called Virtual distributedcomputing Environment (VDCE), is a high-performance computing environment that allows users to write and evaluate networked applications for different hardware and software configurations using a web interface. In this paper we present the software architecture of VDCE by emphasizing application development and specification, scheduling, and execution/runtime aspects.

The parallel Random Access Machine is a very strong model of parallelcomputing that has resisted cost-efficient implementation attempts for decades. Recently, the development of VLSI technology has provided means for indirect on-chip implementation, but there are different variants of the PRAM model that provide different performance, area and power figures and it is not known how their implementations compare to each others. In this paper we measure the performance and estimate the cost of practical implementations of four PRAM models including EREW, Limited Arbitrary CRCW, Full Arbitrary CRCW, Full Arbitrary Multioperation CRCW on our Eclipse chip multiprocessor framework. Interestingly, the most powerful model shows the lowest simulation cost and highest performance/area and performance/power figures.

With the tremendous advances in processor and memory technology, I/O has risen to become the bottleneck in high-performance computing for many applications. The development of parallel file systems has helped to ease the performance gap, but I/O still remains an area needing significant performance improvement. Research has found that noncontiguous I/O access patterns in scientific applications combined with current file system methods to perform these accesses lead to unacceptable performance for large data sets. To enhance performance of noncontiguous I/O, we have created list I/O, a native version of noncontiguous I/O. We have used the parallel Virtual File System (PVFS) to implement our ideas. Our research and experimentation shows that list I/O outperforms current noncontiguous I/O access methods in most I/O situations and can substantially enhance the performance of real-world scientific applications.

Embedded and invisible computing resources are paving the way to a new paradigm known as pervasive computing. More attention needs to be paid to the development of intelligent services in such a highly dynamic environment. This paper aims to present a conceptual model for context awareness based service adaptation methodology. We describe context in context space and represent it with 4-tuple. We then discuss context awareness in terms of both context organization and utilization. Finally, we introduce the notion of adaptation and present the framework for context-aware adaptive services.

Despite the recent advances in access control approaches applicable to grid computing, there remain issues that impede the development of effective access control for grid applications. Amongst them are the lack of context-based models for access control, and reliance on identity or capability-based access control schemes. In this paper, we propose RCBAC model which extends the RBAC with context constraints. The RCBAC mechanisms dynamically grant and adapt permissions to users based on a set of contextual information collected from the grid environments, while retaining the advantages of RBAC model.

A large-scale simulation in e-Science experiments can be modeled by using a workflow. The ProGenGrid Workflow Management System is being developed at the University of Salento in Lecce since 2004 and consists of an editor for designing the experiment and an engine for scheduling the jobs in a Computational Grid. The initial version was based on wrapping the bioinformatics tools as Web Services and scheduling job execution on the Grid by using an opportune engine. Then the engine was optimized to support batch, parameter and MPI jobs by using the Globus Toolkit. This component was developed as part of the Grid Resource Broker project. In this paper, we present the latest advances regarding the editor's new features such as on line monitoring, and the engine's support for scheduling jobs on other grid middleware such as gLite and Unicore.

By federating resources from multiple domains, a shared infrastructure provides aggregated computation resources to a large number of users. With rapid advances in virtualization technologies, we propose the concept of virtual distributed environments as a new sharing paradigm for a multi-domain shared infrastructure. Such virtual environments provide users with confined, customized platforms to execute legacy parallel/distributed applications. Furthermore, we propose to support autonomic adaptation of virtual distributed environments, driven by both dynamic availability of infrastructure resources and dynamic application resource demand. We identify new research challenges and describe our on-going work and preliminary results.

With the advances of wireless communication technology, using the wireless LAN as a platform to perform distributed network computing becomes feasible. In this paper, we studied the characteristics of the end-to-end communication over wireless links. With the advantage of reduced bandwidth competition in each LAN segment separated by the wireless bridges, and with the overlap of wireless and wired communications, an analytical comparison showed that the group communications over wireless links can be more efficient than over a single segment wired LAN. We also conducted experiments of running distributed applications and the results showed that with the support of threads, wireless network computing can achieve the same performance as the wired networks. Furthermore, the statistical results from our survey showed that the users cannot tell the difference between wireless and wired settings in terms of the data accessing speed.
