Emerging natural language processing (NLP) models have become more complex and bigger to provide more sophisticated NLP services. Accordingly, there is also a strong demand for scalable and flexible computer infrastructure to support these large-scale, complex, and diverse NLP models. However, existing proposals cannot provide enough scalability and flexibility as they neither identify nor optimize a wide spectrum of performance-critical operations appearing in recent NLP models and only focus on optimizing specific operations. In this paper, we propose NLP-Fast, a novel system solution to accelerate a wide spectrum of large-scale NLP models. NLP-Fast mainly consists of two parts: (1) NLP-Perf : an in-depth performance analysis tool to identify critical operations in emerging NLP models and (2) NLP-Opt: three end-to-end optimization techniques to accelerate the identified performance-critical operations on various hardware platforms (e.g., CPU, GPU, FPGA). In this way, NLP-Fast can accelerate various types of NLP models on different hardware platforms by identifying their critical operations through NLP-Perf and applying the NLP-Opt's holistic optimizations. We evaluate NLP-Fast on CPU, GPU, and FPGA, and the overall throughputs are increased by up to 2.92x, 1.59x, and 4.47x over each platform's baseline. We release NLP-Fast to the community so that users are easily able to conduct the NLP-Fast's analysis and apply NLP-Fast's optimizations for their own NLP applications.

ProbZelus is a synchronous probabilistic language for the design of reactive probabilistic models in interaction with an environment. Reactive inference methods continuously learn distributions over the unobserved parameters of the model from statistical observations. Unfortunately, this inference problem is in general intractable. Monte Carlo inference techniques thus rely on many independent executions to compute accurate approximations. These methods are expensive but can be parallelized. We propose to use JAX to parallelize ProbZelus reactive inference engine. JAX is a recent library to compile Python code which can then be executed on massively parallel architectures such as GPUs or TPUs. In this paper, we describe a new reactive inference engine implemented in JAX and the new associated JAX backend for ProbZelus. We show on existing benchmarks that our new parallel implementation outperforms the original sequential implementation for a high number of particles.

The complexity of heterogeneous computing architectures, as well as the demand for productive and portable parallel application development, have driven the evolution of parallel programming models to become more comprehensive and complex than before. Enhancing the conventional compilation technologies and software infrastructure to be parallelism-aware has become one of the main goals of recent compiler development. In this work, we propose the design of unified parallel intermediate representation (UPIR) for multiple parallel programming models and for enabling unified compiler transformation for the models. UPIR specifies three commonly used parallelism patterns (SPMD, data and task parallelism), data attributes and explicit data movement and memory management, and synchronization operations used in parallel programming. We demonstrate UPIR via a prototype implementation in the ROSE compiler for unifying IR for both OpenMP and OpenACC and in both C/C++ and Fortran, for unifying the transformation that lowers both OpenMP and OpenACC code to LLVM runtime, and for exporting UPIR to LLVM MLIR dialect. Programmable accelerators aim to provide the flexibility of traditional CPUs, with greatly improved performance and energy-efficiency. Arguably, the greatest impediment to the widespread adoption of programmable accelerators, like GPUs, is the software engineering overhead involved in getting the code to execute correctly. To help combat this issue, GPGPU computing has matured from its origins as a collection of graphics API hacks to include advanced programming features, including object-oriented programming. This level of support, in combination with a shared virtual memory space between the CPU and GPU, make it possible for rich object-oriented frameworks to execute on GPUs with little porting effort. However, executing this type of flexible code on a massively parallel accelerator introduces overhead that has not been well *** this poster, we analyze the direct overhead of virtual function calls on contemporary GPUs. Using the latest GPU architectures and compilers, this poster performs the analysis of how virtual function calls are implemented on GPUs. We quantify the direct overhead incurred from contemporary implementations and show that the massively multithreaded nature of GPUs creates deficiencies and opportunities not found in CPU implementations of virtual function calls.

Graphics processing units (GPUs) have become ubiquitous in computing systems, from personal devices to data centres. Their massively parallel architecture delivers tremendous performance for graphics and general-purpose workloads. However, the open nature of GPUs also introduces security vulnerabilities that can be exploited through side-channel attacks. Defending against such threats often incurs performance overhead, creating tradeoffs between security and speed. This article examines recent research analysing and mitigating GPU side channel attacks while maintaining acceptable performance and presented a multi-faceted defence strategy combining compiler transformations, runtime monitoring, and microarchitectural techniques to balance security and performance. The methodology integrates formal threat models, empirical side-channel evaluations, and rigorous benchmarking. It implements and evaluates prototypes demonstrating security improvement with minimal impact on representative workloads. The results provide promising directions for practical GPU security defences. © 2024 IEEE.

We present an approach to the automatic generation of efficient matrix multiplication code on the latest Sunway processor, which will be employed by the next-generation machine of Sunway Tai-huLight, one of the fastest supercomputers on earth. The method allows users to write simple C code and automatically generates high-performance matrix multiplication kernels. It uses polyhedral transformations to implement rapid compute decomposition, data exchanges across memory hierarchy and memory latency hiding. An assembly routine is finally integrated into the generated kernels. While achieving up to 90.14% of the theoretical peak performance, our method surpasses a highly tuned library by 9.44%. Compared with existing techniques, our approach reduces the software development life cycle to generate efficient matrix code from months to seconds. We also take into account batched matrix multiplication and some fusion patterns for deep learning (DL), outperforming the library-based implementations by 1.30x and 1.67x.

The end of Moore's law with the advent of hardware specialization presents a unique challenge for a much tighter software and hardware co-design environment to exploit domain-specific optimizations and increase design efficiency. The productivity of software-hardware codesign relies not on only in better integration between the software and hardware design methodologies but more importantly in the effectiveness of the design tools at reducing the development time. In this work, we developed Tango, an Optimizing compiler for a Just-in-Time RTL simulator. Tango implements unique hardware-centric compiler transformations to speed up runtime code generation in a software-hardware codesign environment where hardware simulation speed is critical. Tango achieves a 3x average speedup compared to the state-of-the-art RTL simulators.

In federated learning, non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) local datasets lead to accuracy loss compared to homogeneous distribution of datasets. In this paper, we propose an architecture for improving accuracy and offering resilience through federation utilizing non-IID datasets. The proposed architecture performs parallel recognition employing triplication of AI processors with different intelligence. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture improves accuracy by 2.3% compared to accuracy of a single AI processor on average and guarantees resilience.

Childhood leukaemia demands meticulous blood cell analysis for diagnosis, focusing on morphological irregularities like asymmetry and abnormal cell counts. Traditional manual diagnosis via microscopic blood smear images suffers from limitations: reduced reliability, time intensiveness, and observer variability. Automated methods using Computer-Aided Diagnostic (CAD) systems address these challenges. Integrating real-time image preprocessing and segmentation ensures swift operation, reducing the CAD system's processing time and enhancing its overall effectiveness, enabling timely medical intervention and better patient outcomes. This study aims to simplify the overall algorithmic complexity of other state-of-the-art techniques using preprocessing steps, including bilateral filtering and Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE), alongside the segmentation stage involving morphological operations and the watershed algorithm. Therefore, an edge-based approach is proposed to enhance the segmentation mask as these operations aggregate time complexity. This work also describes a parallel implementation utilizing OpenMP and CUDA of the proposed method, evaluating its performance using Intersection over Union (IoU) and F1-score metrics along with computing time and algorithmic complexity. Furthermore, computing time is compared using two x86-64 and two ARM architectures, each with a different number of available CPU cores, to evaluate the behaviour of the proposed approach in different conditions. The study highlights the benefits of parallel processing in enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of White Blood Cell (WBC) Segmentation. It reports that the proposed approach has an average IoU of 0.9439 and an F1-score of 0.9697 with an image processing rate higher than 60 images per second.
