This paper investigates a novel motion vector outlier rejection method based on using mean shift clustering on block motion vectors. The accuracy of compressed domain global motion estimation techniques is largely influenced by its ability to counter the outlier motion vectors. These outliers occur in the block motion vector field due to moving objects, noise or due to large matching errors as a result of the encoders priority on rate distortion optimization. In the present work it is shown that by using mean shift clustering on block motion vectors, those clusters which correspond to outlier motion vectors can be identified. Once detected these clusters are kept out of the global motion estimation process thereby increasing the robustness of estimated camera parameters. The proposed method is compared with existing state-of-the-art outlier removal methods using synthetic and real video sequences to establish and validate its superiority.

Steganography is the art of hiding secret data inside a carrier media. Most steganographic techniques suffer from the drawback that they are unable to retain the perceptual quality. Using saliency cues for developing an adaptive steganographic technique can help to alleviate this problem. In this work, a novel perception driven robust crypto-steganographic algorithm is proposed for embedding secure data in videos. The proposed scheme selects the payload regions based on natural scene statistics. To further strengthen the scheme and ensure intractability of secure data, the encrypted secret data is embedded in a random manner using jumbling sequence generator in the frames. We utilize perceptual hashing to evaluate the number of bit insertions that will not compromise the perceptual quality. A comprehensive performance evaluation of the proposed scheme is provided to detail the effectiveness. We demonstrate that the scheme shows a lot of promise in being robust against statistical and saliency based attacks.

Fine-grained visual classification has been considered for image data in various domains of environmental importance such as birds, animals and plants. This work considers the classification problem of the latter, based on the leaf shape. Traditional works in such areas typically propose better features, or sophisticated classification frameworks. In this work, we ask a different question: Given simple and efficient features, and a well-known binary classifier such as support vector machine (SVM), among various strategies, what may be a good way to pose the multi-class classification problem as multiple binary classifications? In this respect, we compare three different strategies, all of which use the same set of features. From our results, we conclude that, one of these three approaches, based on hierarchical class-grouping, clearly outperforms the others, with high classification accuracy. This suggest that classification strategy is an important aspect for the given features and classifiers. To our knowledge, such a study in the fine-grained classification area (and particularly for the nascent area of leaf-classification), has not yet been explored.

Traditional 2D face recognition systems drastically fails with pose variance and poor illuminations. Many techniques but with limited success has been introduced. Expensive 3D setup can be used to deal with this problem. In this work a low cost, low computation and quick good quality 3D reconstruction helping 2D face recognition systems is proposed. The proposed system is a fast automatic 3D face reconstruction approach from rectified stereo images. An automatic synthesis of training images of various face poses is proposed. Three enhancements adaptive histogram equalization (AHE) to improve contrast of face images, horizontal gradient ordinal relationship pattern(HGORP) to handle poor illumination and steerable filter(SF) for noise reduction and illumination invariance are used to improve the system performance. Later SURF based matching is done with score level fusion of all three enhancements. A database of 107 subjects has been collected to evaluate the system performance. It is observed that the proposed system can handle large pose variations and poor illumination very well.

We propose a deep learning based technique to classify actions based on Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks. The proposed scheme first learns spatial temporal features from the video, using an extension of the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to 3D. A Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is then trained to classify each sequence considering the temporal evolution of the learned features for each time step. Experimental results on the CMU MoCap, UCF 101, Hollywood 2 dataset show the efficacy of the proposed approach. We extend the proposed framework with an efficient motion feature, to enable handling significant camera motion. The proposed approach outperforms the existing deep models for each dataset. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

Optimum bit-allocation between texture video and depth map in 3D video results in better virtual view quality. To incorporate this, rate distortion optimization (RDO) property is used. The RDO in 3D video implies minimization of synthesis distortion at available rate. Several bit-allocation methods proposed in literature have not considered perceptual quality improvement. In this paper, we propose bit-allocation criteria that results in better visual quality of synthesized view. To achieve this, visual quality metrics are to be incorporated and structural similarity (SSIM) index is one of the metric that measures perceived quality. As SSIM gives similarity measure, we used dSSIM as distortion metric in mode decision and motion estimation instead of traditional metrics like mean square error (MSE) or sum of squared error (SSE). Synthesis distortion is modeled using dSSIM and joint bit-allocation is formulated as optimization problem that is solved using Lagrange multiplier method. Model parameters are determined at frame level for more accurate calculation of quantization parameters. BD-Rate evaluation shows a reduction in bit rate with improved SSIM. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

We identify two important directions of algorithm development in the tracking literature - first, the older and more established mean-shift based approaches; and second, more recent formulations of viewing tracking as detection by parts (aka tracking-learning-detecting). Introductory versions of both these approaches had their own weaknesses due to the main challenges of tracking like illumination variations, abrupt motions, deformations/articulations and occlusions. Both these approaches have developed independently with a number of follow-ups in the literature and even the matured versions were never integrated. We propose to integrate these two different viewpoints of single object tracking where the contribution lies in the construction of the target model as a collection of object part/patch detectors integrated with a kernel. Similarly, the kernel weighted patch detector responses form the candidate model. The Bhattacharyya coefficient based similarity measure between the target and candidate model is maximized in a gradient ascent framework to deduce a mean-shift like centroid update rule to iteratively track the target in the subsequent frames. We call this unified one the Patch Detector Shift based Tracker (PD-Shift). Experimental results of PD-Shift based tracking performance analysis is presented for the BoBoT dataset.

Recognizing human faces in the wild is emerging as a critically important, and technically challenging computer vision problem. With a few notable exceptions, most previous works in the last several decades have focused on recognizing faces captured in a laboratory setting. However, with the introduction of databases such as LFW and Pubfigs, face recognition community is gradually shifting its focus on much more challenging unconstrained settings. Since its introduction, LFW verification benchmark is getting a lot of attention with various researchers contributing towards state-of-the-results. To further boost the unconstrained face recognition research, we introduce a more challenging indian Movie Face Database (IMFDB) that has much more variability compared to LFW and Pubfigs. The database consists of 34512 faces of 100 known actors collected from approximately 103 indian movies. Unlike LFW and Pubfigs which used face detectors to automatically detect the faces from the web collection, faces in IMFDB are detected manually from all the movies. Manual selection of faces from movies resulted in high degree of variability (in scale, pose, expression, illumination, age, occlusion, makeup) which one could ever see in natural world. IMFDB is the first face database that provides a detailed annotation in terms of age, pose, gender, expression, amount of occlusion, for each face which may help other face related applications.

We forget action steps and perform some unwanted action movements as amateur performers during our daily exercise routine, dance performances, etc. To improve our proficiency, it is important that we get a feedback on our performances in terms of where we went wrong. In this paper, we propose a framework for analyzing and issuing reports of action segments that were missed or anomalously performed. This involves comparing the performed sequence with the standard action sequence and notifying when misalignments occur. We propose an exemplar based Approximate String Matching (ASM) technique for detecting such anomalous and missing segments in action sequences. We compare the results with those obtained from the conventional Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm for sequence alignment. It is seen that the alignment of the action sequences under conventional DTW fails in the presence of missed action segments and anomalous segments due to its boundary condition constraints. The performance of the two techniques has been tested on a complex aperiodic human action dataset with Warm up exercise sequences that we developed from correct and incorrect executions by multiple people. The proposed ASM technique shows promising alignment and missed/anomalous notification results over this dataset. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

The modern remote sensing imaging sensors, like those in the IKONOS and QuickBird satellites, are capable of generating panchromatic images with one meter spatial resolution and multispectral images with good spectral information. The principal objective of fusion in remote sensing is to obtain high-resolution multispectral images that can combine the spectral characteristic of the low-resolution multispectral images with the spatial information of the high-resolution panchromatic images. Traditional fusion methods, such as IHS, PCA and Brovey, can reach good spatial resolution results, but often cause spectral distortion problems. In the literature, it is possible to find some image fusion methods using frequency domain processing, like wavelet-based fusion methods. Although they preserve good spectral information, their spatial visual effects are not satisfactory. IHS fusion method enhanced by Fourier transform presents good spectral and spatial resolution results, but limits the number of spectral bands used in the fusion process to three. In this paper, a method based on Fourier transform is proposed in order to obtain good spatial and spectral resolutions, without limiting the number of bands. In order to compare the spatial and spectral effects of this new method with those of IHS, IHS enhanced by Fourier transform and wavelet-based methods, IKONOS panchromatic and multispectral images were used as the test data. Quantitative measurements such as correlation coefficient, discrepancy and Mean Structural Similarity index were applied to evaluate the quality of the fused images. The results have shown that the new method can keep almost the same spatial resolution as the panchromatic images, and its spectral effect is well preserved.
