In order to achieve the same level of integrity as that achieved with the earlier mechanical systems, multiple signal sources and several lanes of computing are necessary, these being cross-monitored in order to isolate any failed equipment and ensure safe operation. The impact of imperfect power control on an asynchronous direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) system in optical transmission is discussed. Taking into account the intermodulation distortion due to the laser diode nonlinearity, the performance of the system is evaluated using the derived bit-error-rate. This analysis assumes a memoryless third-order polynomial to present the laser diode nonlinearity.

In recent years the increase in desk top computing, has lead to an increase in the sophistication of both design and simulation tools available to the design engineer. One such tool becoming more wide spread amongst academia and industry is Mathworks Simulink / Matlab package. The Mathworks Matlab is a simulation package that allows the analysis of complex static systems to be modeled through 'numeric computation and visualisation'. This paper has shown how easily the Mathworks Matlab / Simulink package can be used to simulate electric motors and there associated controllers. It has also described how Simulink can be used to implement the same control circuits as embedded real time controllers. Once the support software has been developed this allows the engineer or researcher to use the full power of a high level block diagram environment, i.e. they can concentrate on the problem at hand, not on it's implementation.

This paper describes the structure of a simulator developed for the performance assessment of the Advanced Time division Multiple Access system. The simulator incorporates a Resource Allocator (RA) module which interacts with other subsystems in the ATDMA model such as medium access, link adaptation, dynamic channel allocation and ARQ, as well as long term processes such as handover and admission control. The paper deals with the queuing and prioritizing functions of the ATDMA model and the practical limitations which must be incorporated within the simulator for realistic assessment of system performance.
