Two projects are reviewed with emphasis on the development and integration of reliability, maintainability and supportability (RM&S) analysis software tools for the preliminary design stages. The aim of the first project is to automate and integrate analysis algorithms into the ACADS (advanced computeraideddesignsystem) software used in the preliminary weapon system stage. The second project's objective is to design and prototype an integrated product development (IPD) workstation to be used by RM&S engineers on a number of advanced weapon system programs. This workstation incorporates computer-aideddesign (CAD) drawing file interfaces and RM&S analysis tools in a concurrent engineering environment.

The planner maps high-level code constructs onto arbitrarily complex datapath architectures. Some of the practical problems associated with the application of formal, MIL-STD-1629, failure modes and effects analyses (FMEAs) are addressed, and an alternative cost-saving methodology is proposed. The technique is fast in application and allows engineers to influence design decisions, using FMEA studies, as the design progresses. The technique follows the spirit of the standard, rather than its letter, and overcomes what is considered one of the major shortcomings of the standard, since a single failure can effectively only disrupt one system function. It is noted that the methods described have already rapidly gained acceptance and wide application in the United Kingdom.

A method for integration of classification, computer-aideddesign, process planning and scheduling, and control modules in the design of flexible manufacturing systems is (FMSs) presented. The requirements for cells are deduced, and an FMS integrated software is proposed with the help of a database design. A knowledge-based rough classification and coding system has been developed for coding similar parts, and an expert code convertor was developed to translate non-Opitz code into Opitz code. A product data system is designed using computer-aided programming for designing a family of similar parts. A process planning module is interfaced with CAD and other systems to generate a suitable process plan. A set of rules is suggested to determine the optimum scheduling procedure for machining operations. An FMS control algorithm using Petri net controllers is presented. Software integration of the FMS systems and factory floor practices is discussed.< >

The availability of high-speed code systems and computer-aidedsystems equipped with appropriate indications and control interfaces with operating personnel has made it possible to concentrate large areas of railroad territory at single sites, thus gaining efficiencies in the movement of trains as well as utilization of the right of way. Being able to recognize the risks involved and provide for layout and design to mitigate against adverse impacts of possible disruptive influences and to provide and distribute plans and standing instructions that will define the mode of operation with arrangements to be implemented in a situation involving a major incident are two problems faced. Various factors to be considered are identified, especially as visits to various control centers indicated many layouts had failed to provide for various hazards involved, and there is a lack of formal, documented alternative scenarios for the continued operation of the enterprise in the event of major incidents of various types.< >

A method for efficiently implementing access control lists (ACLs) in the main memory object-oriented database systems (OODBSs) is proposed. The main features of the method are the following: ACLs are not stored directly, but via ACL numbers; and each process has a cache which records results of evaluations of ACLs for this process and certain ACL numbers. The particular implementation of ACL numbers in the High-Performance Portable Common Tool Environment (H-PCTE) is considered, and a set of measures which speed up access controls in the most time-critical data manipulation operations is presented. The author then compares the proposed method with other approaches, and discusses whether and how the proposed method can be used to implement ACLs in a disc-oriented system.< >

A prototype system has been developed to input 3-D computer-aided-design (CAD) data to automatically generate and implement robot trajectories for such application as waterjet cutting, surface finishing and polishing. The system can drive various robot configurations and handle contingencies such as collisions and singularities. The system provides a framework for integration of high-level reasoning, real-time path and trajectory planning, and various levels of feedback based on contingency detection algorithms or sensor data. Although initial CAD data have been in the form of IGES geometric entities, a higher-level CAD description based on manufacturing features which incorporates both geometric and process information is being developed. This feature-based CAD representation provides a direct interface between the CAD design data and the planning system for robot control. An agent actor paradigm is proposed as the representation for software/hardware system specifications and associated software and hardware modules.< >

A general framework is proposed for the design of intelligent machines. It is based on theoretical principles that are crystallizing at the present time as a result of joint multidisciplinary efforts in the areas of robotics, intelligent control, large systems for information distribution, and decision support. This framework, called here the multiresolutional approach, reflects the nature of cognitive processes in intelligent machines. The world, the decision-making activities, the perception, and the controlsystems are explicitly organized within the model in such a manner as to deal with multiple representation of the same process of the intelligent machine functioning at different resolutions simultaneously. The multiresolutional approach allows for viewing all existing architectures for intelligent machines within a set of theoretical models, which makes possible their comparison and selection. It also allows for answering a number of questions that traditionally were addressed ad hoc: how many levels the hierarchy should have, how to select vocabularies at different levels, and so on.< >

The next-generation of tokamaks, ITER (International Thermonuclear Text Reactor) or BPX (Burning Plasma Experiment), will be characterized by an even greater emphasis on joint operation and experimentation. Preparations are being made for such shared facilities by developing a systematic approach to remote, joint physics operation involving experimental teams at several locations. The local area network of computers used for control and data acquisition on present and future experiments can be extended over a wide area network to provide a mechanism for remote operation of subsystems required for physics experiments. The technology required for high-bandwidth (>or=45-Mb/s) connections between multiple sites either exists or will be available over the next few years. With the rapid development of high-performance workstations, network interfaces, distributed computing, and video conferencing, one can proceed with the development of a system of control and analysis sites to provide for consistent, efficient, and continuing collaborations. Early establishment of such sites could also enhance existing jointdesign and development efforts.< >
