An approach to incorporating a knowledge-based system into a computer-aided-designsystem for the design of an injection molded part is proposed. To demonstrate the procedure involved and the information revealed, a Prolog knowledge-based system is applied to designing new molds for the injection molding of plastic balls. Two new mold designs are proposed. The associated computer-aided-designsystem is described in some detail. Areas in which further work is needed are identified.

The need for a comprehensive equipment information management system is crucial for driving high equipment reliability/utilization in manufacturing. The authors describe the features of one such system developed and implemented at Intel's factories. This equipment management system was layered on top of the preexisting shop-floor computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) system, Workstream. Focus areas of the system are tools for managing total productive maintenance (a precursor to total quality control);statistical process control on equipment monitors;features for total paper elimination and thus reduced particle generation;predictive maintenance;and reliability and maintainability analysis modules using Weibull theory. A key by-product of this functionality introduction is a vastly improved user interface to Workstream. The authors also discuss the joint efforts by Sematech and Intel to develop an analysis system which sets the foundation for an industrywide standard for the first time. Numerous shop-floor application examples are highlighted, with the focus on methodology of end user involvement and factory implementation.

The authors present a formal approach to statistical process control of VLSIC fabrication processes. The system, developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), aims at integrating the design (process and layout), wafer processing, testing, diagnosis, and control into a set of strongly interacting procedures that will aim at maximizing the profit from the fabrication line. The authors describe an implementation of this approach within the CMU computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) framework. The key feature of this methodology is the exploration of the multivariate distribution of parameters measured in the fabrication process. This allows for more accurate decision making compared to the traditional statistical quality control (SQC) chart-based approaches. The statistical controlsystem presented, while relying on more sophisticated algorithms, looks quite similar to the standard systems from the user standpoint. The system uses the in-process measurements available during manufacturing. The authors focus on the statistical quality control subsystem of the CAM framework.

The architecture and working of a flexible multiple mobile robot system (MMRS) are described. The use of a path network to define allowed paths for the mobile robots is proposed. This greatly simplifies the detection of possible collisions between the robots and the problem of replanning the motion. The MMRS is divided into three main components (1) standard pattern, (2) central controller, and (3) individual mobile robot. The architecture of the proposed MMRS is presented and its operation discussed in detail. Efficient control algorithms for both the central controller and individual mobile robots are developed and presented. A CAD (computer-aided-design)/simulation system for the design and evaluation of the MMRS is developed. Simulation results to emphasize the validity of the system are presented.

A real-time Petri net simulator (RTPNS), including software specifications, interactive algorithm, firing rule, and real-time implementation, is presented. The software provides an intuitive design tool with graphical orientation and convenient debugging capability for the modeling and control of automated manufacturing systems. The complex interactions among control, communication, and database functions in a manufacturing environment is also addressed by using a Petri net model. The performance of the total system is evaluated by the developed software through computer simulation. The firing time, a key to the production rate, can be optimally selected through the simulation results. A computer simulation of control of a prototype flexible manufacturing system using the RTPNS is described.

Techbase Enhancements for Autonomous Machines (TEAM) is a joint effort among several US Army organizations, national laboratories, and commercial contractors to develop a vehicle controlsystem that can support a mix of capabilities ranging from master-slave teleoperation to autonomous control. The overall TEAM controlsystem architecture and the design of the mobility and communication functions are described. The architecture it is based on the real-time controlsystem (RCS), a hierarchical, sensory-based controlsystem. In this application, RCS controls all vehicle mobility functions, coordinates the operations of the other subsystems on the vehicle, and communicates between the vehicle and the remote operator control station. The functional modules of the controlsystem and their responsibilities are described, with emphasis placed on the modules that support mobility functions. The design of the mobility and communication subsystems and the implementation of the mobility and communication controlsystems are outlined.
