computeraidedcontrol Engineering is addressed in the context of an integrated environment. A set of functional requirements is stated as a basis for the development of a software structure which can be viewed as a composite object consisting of design, analysis, specification, validation and implementation tools, as well as a problem oriented language, an information structure and a knowledge base to assist the user in the problem formulation and solving tasks and other usual support tools that are part of CACE environments. The aim is to develop an efficient, modern, integrated and powerful environment for control and systems engineering education, research and development. The paper not only presents the basic requirements but also a logical structure for such an environment, describing its characteristics in terms of the methodological context, conceptual modeling, formal problem oriented languages, knowledge representation. Presently, the proposed environment is being developed, and experiments with a prototype expert system have been made to enrich and validate the ideas herein discussed.

A new software infrastructure has been created to support both present and future CAD facilities for control engineering. The various facilities provided by the software infrastructure;namely, the man-machine interface, database, graphics, design and simulation tools;are described. The development philosophy is discussed, and the development environment used is described. Future extensions to the environment are indicated.

RMCS is in the unique situation that a majority of its student population is from the British Army Technical Corps, and now also the Royal Air Force, or from the Defence Industries. A majority of the engineering undergraduates of these Armed Services now read for a BEng degree at RMCS (Cranfield). Many of these students will later fill appointments in the defence industry or research establishments as project managers. The computers, minis or desktop (IBM or BBC's), are used for computer Assisted Learning (CAL), computeraided Practical (CAP), computeraideddesign (CAD) or Simulations which together make a controlsystem Suite of packages. The paper describes a sample of the CAL, CAP, CAD, and Simulation packages and show how they are used to develop the student user's understanding of control Theory and its application to specific controlsystems that are the needs of a particular course.

The paper gives a conceptual framework for stability robustness analysis and robust decentralized controlsystemdesign, and its realization through interactive computer-aided software. The system combines algorithmic and expert system techniques. An important feature of the knowledge-based system is the modularization of the software package which allows a distributed problem solving approach. The 15th order mathematical model of a nuclear power plant which includes the physical processes, as well as the main controlsystems, is used to demonstrate the power of the proposed knowledge-based methodology.

For the linear multivariable system the authors discussed the problem of block decoupling. We discuss the inverse problem about over one, that is how determine the cut such that the block decoupling problem of the given system is solvable for the cut. Using the result of Xu (1988) we give the method of finding the cut and prove it for thinnest cut.

CAD software for controlsystem is presented. For the practical use, the data processing of actual processes is essential. Parameter tuning and adaptation for nonlinearity and historical change is discussed. A simulation case study is useful for the analysis and design of actual processes because multivariable interaction and nonlinear behavior exist commonly and those characteristics cannot be theoretically analysed.

computeraidedcontrolsystemdesign (CACSD) has become very common during the last ten years. Even the use of these software packages for the design of the control strategies which use the conventional Single Input Single Output (SISO) controllers has shown to be a powerful tool for a control engineer. In the current paper a simulation study of control strategies for the flotation process is presented. The derivation of a dynamic model to simulate the flotation process is described. The interfacing of this simulator with the ONSPEC control software package is discussed. Differences between the classical PID-control strategies and the expert strategy designed using this software for the flotation process are discussed.

A discrete-event system is a system whose behaviour can be described by a set of time-consuming activities, performed according to a prescribed ordering. The events concerned correspond to starting or ending time of some activities. This kind of system is not linear in the conventional arithmetic, but is, however, linear in max-algebra. A new kind of linear system, also called psuedo-linear discrete-event system, has been set up. Referring to usual linear system theory, a series of results for modelling and analysis of discrete-event dynamic system (DEDS) are developed, such as state equation, stability, characteristic equation, eigenvalue, periodicity, controllability, observability, etc.. The Psuedo-linear Discrete-event system Analysis Package (PDSAP) is to implement the matrix calculations in max-algebra sense, model DEDS and analyze performances of the system. Some fundamental contents of max-algebra and DEDS, functions and some algorithms of PDSAP are presented in this paper.

In this paper an integral training system for elementary control priciples and tuning of PID-controllers is described. This training system runs in IBM PC/AT compatible microcomputers, and is programmed with Fortran. The training is based on a simulated process, training material and interactive training sessions. The systems is designed such that the presence of an instructor is not necessary during the training sessions. This system shows clearly that microcomputers equipped with graphics terminal suit well for used as training simulators.

The paper describes the main features of a CAD program which is being developed for the design of true digital control (TDC) systems, based on a new method of input-output, state variable feedback pole-assignment. The program provides the user with assistance at all stages in the design process;from multivariable model identification and estimation to final controlsystemdesign and evaluation. Discrete-time, MIMO model identification and estimation is achieved by the use of recursive instrumental variable (IV) methods. The controlsystemdesign is based on the definition of a particular non-minimal state space (NMSS) model form, obtained directly from the identification/estimation results. The state vector of this NMSS model is composed only of the present and past sampled values of input and output variables, together with certain integral-of-error states, which ensure 'type-1' servomechanism performance.
