The authors present some models, design methods and analysis techniques used in SAW-CAD (surface-acoustic-wave computer-aideddesign). They provide an introduction to CAD system options, implementation, and philosophy;including computer hardware considerations. The basic elements for a SAW-filter CAD system are presented which include both design and analysis. Examples of simulations and results are shown. Finally, a brief description of structural layout considerations for SAW components, and individual die and wafer layout are presented.

A review is presented of the basic features of the high-level interactive language L-A-S (Linear Algebra and systems) used in CAD (computer-aideddesign) of linear controlsystems. Modular structure of the language permits easy modifications, updating and extensions. The language is implemented on mini- and microcomputers. The use of the L-A-S is illustrated on the typical LQG/LTR (linear quadratic Gaussian/loop transfer recovery) synthesis problem.

The use of artificial intelligence technology and computer-aideddesign and manufacturing for the design and analysis of custom joint prostheses fabricated on demand for specific patients has been explored. A description is given of the ORTHO-PERT system, an orthopedic healthcare workstation developed for this purpose, focusing on its architecture and unique features. It is the stress and the strain field created by the implant itself that controls the remodeling of the bony tissue around a bioinert implant;the objective has been to create an automated design and manufacturing system that incorporates such knowledge. An expert system for interpretation of forces on hip prosthesis has been implemented. This system known as FEMEX (finite-element-method expert) prepares the basic FEM model for proposed hip prosthesis design. The results of the FEM analysis are heuristically interpreted, and conclusions are drawn and provided to the host expert system.

The author describes an approach to the synthesis of VLSI systems from their high-level behavioral descriptions into structural implementations. This approach integrates operation scheduling, data-path allocation, and control allocation of a traditional synthesis process. Therefore, the advantages from compacting the data path, for example, can be compared immediately with the possible expansion of the control logic to justify the compaction. The horizontal algorithm is designed to make decisions on what should be done in each synthesis step. When making such design decisions, it makes tradeoffs between the data path and control, resource sharing, and operation scheduling, as well as cost and performance. The experimental results show that under the same conditions, a horizontal approach performs better than a vertical approach with respect to overall system performance and estimated layout area. The proposed horizontal optimization algorithm was designed and implemented in a computer-aideddesign and manufacturing.

The need for having benchmark problems for the evaluation of software for computer-aidedcontrolsystem analysis and design is discussed. The two benchmark problems that have been released to date by the Benchmark Working Group of the Technical Committee on computer-aidedcontrolsystemdesign of the ieeecontrolsystems Society are described, as are the plans for future problems. Information that has been learned about the preparation, distribution, and dissemination of results for this type of problem is included.

A review of the applications of symbolic manipulation in computer-aidedcontrolsystem analysis and design (CACSAD) is given. The research reviewed includes applications of symbolic manipulation languages, such as Macsyma and REDUCE, of logic programming (Prolog) and of Lisp. Application areas reviewed include nonlinear and optimal control, robotics, aircraft control, and spacecraft control. A computer program that combines symbolic manipulation and interactive graphics into a user-interface for controlsystem analysis and design software is presented. The program serves as a tool for research on the integration of symbolic, graphical, and numerical computation for CACSAD on a microcomputer. Elements of the program include a graphical user interface, a model structure editor, a transfer function editor, a symbolic transfer function finder, and an output formatter.< >

Preliminary results and some practical examples of cell configuration, cell controldesign, reconfiguration, and redesign for flexible manufacturing systems performed by a hybrid expert system are given. The functions of configuration and reconfiguration are derived as the key sequences to be performed with advanced, intelligent control. The CS-PROLOG-based expert system, called ALL-EX, appears to be an effective tool to tackle this problem. An important feature of the expert system, the integrated simulation module, serves as a verification facility in the selection of an adequate configuration. Experimental results are presented.< >

The authors describe an intelligent design associate (IDA), with emphasis on the techniques used in developing the associate and the mechanics of its operation. The expert-system architecture is described, along with some of the problems encountered when coupling symbolic and numerical systems. Also considered is how to transfer information between the expert system and the analysis package, as well as how the expert system is able to direct the actual sequence of analyses performed by the CACSD (computer-aidedcontrolsystems design) package. It is demonstrated that not only is such a coupled system feasible, but it is also replicatable in that it can be created with off-the-shelf, commercially available software. An example is included to show that the system is capable of designing simple compensators.< >
