A system that converts the computer-aideddesign (CAD) database description of a process controlsystem into a frame-oriented knowledge base for a diagnostic expert controlsystem is described. The target expert system for the automated knowledge generation is NASA's Knowledge-Based Autonomous Test Engineer (KATE), developed to assist in the monitoring and control of Space Shuttle ground support systems. KATE retains the structure of the system it has knowledge about in its frame representations and derives understanding of the target system from intercomponent relationship knowledge held within those frames. A CAD database generated for a particular process controlsystem contains all the structural information required to reconstruct the system, but little or no functional data. A functional description can be inferred in some cases from the CAD data; however, the complexity of such a system for a domain as large as process control is extensive. The construction and operation of an automated knowledge generation software system that performs the conversion from CAD database to knowledge base are discussed.< >

An analysis is presented of the benefits and costs of the first use of the CASCADE expert system for computer-aidedcontrolsystemdesign in the classroom. CASCADE allowed the students to concentrate on important issues of problem formulation and modeling by removing much of the mechanical drudgery associated with information handling and procedural design of controllers which is commonly found in most computer-aideddesignsystems. In addition, the expert system provided a step-by-step process for a robust multivariable controller design methodology, as applied to their model. The negative aspects of the trial use of CASCADE were the difficulties caused by software bugs in CASCADE, and the high cost of the computer resources required by the class.

The paper treets general principles underlying in the construction of simulation models employed in coordinated joint technology, facilities and control subsystems design. Algorithmic and software means are described which realize the developed simulation models. Some real life examples are given of the use of these means in CAD systems for steel-making industry. As simulation technology and software means receive further development an increasing number of algorithms is used for analysis and synthesis of process controlsystems. A significant part of these efforts may go in parallel with the design of process schemes and facilities. Simulation models intended to apply this approach to steel-making industries feature certain specifics described in the paper.

The PBX-M experiment uses a programmable logic controller (PLC) system and man-machine interface. The system consists of 4 PLCs and associated remote bases, four intelligent control panel assemblies, one color cathode-ray tube station which can support over 50 mimic and alarm pages, a local area network communication link, and a multidrop communication highway. This system replaces an IBM 1800 computer, used for over 20 years. The PLC is responsible for control of over 15 subsystems on PBX-M. These include six shaping field coils and associated power subsystems, poloidal and toroidal coil subsystems and power supplies, and the safety, water, and timing subsystems. The PLC has limited interfaces to vacuum, getter, and shunt metering subsystems. The design and documentation of this system were greatly aided with the use of relatively simple CAD tools, namely, IBM XT and Apple Macintosh computers.

The KEDDC software package for computer-aidedcontrolsystemdesign is applied to the development of control techniques for future large flexible spacecraft in a joint industry, university and government research and development project. The Operational Mobile Communications Satellite (OMSAT) proposed for the mid 1990's featuring a 44m offset-fed antenna, is used as target application. A reduced version of a 146th order high fidelity dynamics model of the satellite serves as a benchmark system. This application is demanding and forms an important performance benchmark for any software system because the high order of structural models requires the use of highly stable and efficient numerical algorithms. KEDDC has been tested on this problem for more than one year and has performed flawlessly, improving considerably the design efficiency as well as the scope of system analysis.

A computer implementation of a flight controlsystemdesign method, based on decomposition-aggregation principle and decentralized control of large-scale mechanical systems, is described. Numerical aspects of using the complete nonlinear aircraft model in the synthesis process are considered. Data about software organization and user interaction are given.

This paper presents an outline of an ongoing effort to develop a new approach to computeraideddesign of controlsystems. The new approach integrates three computeraided techniques for problem solving: artificial intelligence (expert systems), decision analysis, and standard routines for controlsystems analysis and design. The new approach will offer guidance to inexperienced users on how to approach a design problem. A special subproblem, the design of a position controlsystem for a printwheel mechanism, is used as an initial design problem that the prototype expert decision aid should solve.

A general purpose graphics based man-machine computer interface is described with particular reference to its use in the design of controlsystems and the simulation of dynamical systems. The software requirements for such an interface are outlined and the structure of a real time graphics operating system (ARGOS) which meets these requirements is discussed. The operating system allows complex interconnected linear and nonlinear systems to be described in simple diagrammatic form for direct interpretation by existing algorithms for analysis in both the time and frequency domain. The graphics input procedures are applicable to a number of existing computeraideddesign packages.
