We explore the fusion of expert controlsystem analysis and design tools into a prototype computer environment. The use of expert systems technology allows the transfer of recent developments in controlsystemdesign to users who may not be experts in either theoretical developments or computer technology, in a vehicle which provides considerable design flexibility. The technology does not provide as general a framework as, for example, a command language based environment;however, in specific applications, such as system modeling and linear controlsystems, it is useful and appropriate. Criteria for such applications is that they have a mature theoretical basis, and that the user interaction influence the sequence of the design process.

A CAD-package serving for the design of discrete-time multivariable controlsystems is presented. Various design methods for different feedback controller types (DB, PID, SC) are described based on discrete-time parametric process models which are obtained by on-line identification methods. The concept of the software package contains an interpreter and a database offering high flexibility in the design and coordinating the design modules. A method for the design of decentralized controllers by decoupling is described. The basic concept is the minimization of the influence of the other subsystems on the controlled subsystem by proper choice of controller parameters. Two criteria to measure this influence are proposed. The controller design is carried out by minimization of one of these criteria together with criteria that take into account the performance of the decoupled subsystem. The implementation of the method as part of a program package is sketched and its application demonstrated by means of a realistic example.

This paper considers a computeraideddesign of a digital controller for multivariable systems which realizes approximately an arbitrarily specified closed-loop response. The algorithm is derived based on relations of series expansions of pulse transfer function matrices. A linear equation is obtained for parameters of a controller. A computer program is developed based on the algorithm to allow a designer to assess quickly the effect of specifications on a resultant closed-loop response. For example, one can understand that a large control input is needed when a short settling time is specified. Some numerical examples are given.

In recent years, computers have assumed an important role in the logic design of industrial digital controlsystems. The implementation of large-scale digital systems is an example of one design problem which can be impractical to solve by hand. Based on technological demands, an engineer should form a desired control specification which represents the input format to an available computer. A computer should produce desired logic equations as a basis for the immediate realization. Software for complete design of digital control networks is presented. It is applicable for treating deterministic as well as stochastic systems, both combinational and sequential. The concept of using interactive computer graphics and other available computer aids in the synthesis process is given.
